Songs don't have to be played on the radio to be radio friendly. As I am listening, this demo has a pop sound that he later dropped for the eccentric, home grown, minimalist sound and lyrics that made him great. Watch the documentary on youtube where he talks some about his transition. He says when he gave up trying to be a rock star that's when he became good.

this was released in the days where he was transitioning between his old band, the dancing hoods, which he was in to pursue his dream of being a rockstar, as he put it, and his new identity as sparklehorse. in his own words, around the time he started sparklehorse is when he started making "good music." i think this was his youthful pop side, before all the eclectic influences and experimentation. he hadn't explored new sounds as much and wasn't quite so self conscious and reclusive.

"Someday I Will Treat You Good" sounds almost like a mix of funky and grunge. Voice seems crisper and less fragile than the following years, too. Guess the 1996 incident had an effect on it.

I wouldn't say that the accident had that much of an affect musically other than, creating his second album. Vivadixie came out before the accident anyway. He mostly recorded quietly because he was married to someone who couldn't sleep with him making too much noise. Also Teresa (his wife) filed for divorce causing him to shoot himself and end his life. A text message can cause that much damage. But there's probably a lot more to the story. Who knows.

One of the greatest live shows I saw in my life. Linkous ranks with Tom Waits and Nick Cave from my live concert real life show experiences. From his toxicology report, his blood alcohol content was 0.43 at the time of his death, benzodiazepines and antidepressants were also found in his system. So sad...

Benzos are for sure a sneaky killer of addicts.. We think yea I've eaten a few bars before and been fine but when you mix it with the spike in your vein.. you wake up in an ambulance with EMTs who've had a stressful time attempting to save your life with a shot of Narcan... One of the most sobering moments in my life was in the back of an ambulance revived after not breathing for five to ten minutes and the nurse on duty asked me why I was so upset they just saved my life? My life almost paused in that moment and I realized these great people were working to save a no good junkies life because they care about humankind. And all I was giving them was attitude and anger. No joke I was ripping shit out of my arms and what not like in the movies.. and all it took was her looking me in the eye and saying, "we are saving your life, why are you mad?" I had no answer because I realized I was in the wrong...

I first heard about Sparklehorse in 1996 when I told a friend about the Vic Chesnutt show I saw the night before. He's seen Mark perform after he'd taken too many quaaludes with wine and had passed out on the toilet. Because Mark's circulation had been cut off he had to use a wheelchair for a few days. My friend was reminded of the show when I told him that Vic was paraplegic and had to perform in a wheelchair. Not long after that day Mark and Vic became friends. Their suicides were about three months apart almost fifteen years later.
