Salt Dip Treatment for Fish

This is a demonstration video of a salt dip treatment at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility. This treatment is being done on small fingerling Atlantic salmon for potential bacteria in the gills. This video shows basic steps and protocols for dip treating, these steps may vary slightly for different facilities. Contact the UWSP NADF for further assistance.

great video but why didn't the roll mor belly up in the solution? was it too weak at 3% and that's why??

Salmon are quite tolerant than other species, so they did not roll over as some species would. Because they are young fish, we did not want to increase levels past 3%.

Is it aquarium salt or epsom salt? Thanks for the info!

It is food grade, iodine free salt (NaCl). You can get it at local feed mills in larger quantities, just make sure there are no additives.

Professor H told me that if I used salt water out of the sea, to mix it one third sea water to two thirds fresh water. What do you say Sir?

Hi Peter, I am unsure, we normally use food grade iodine free salt for this, it is cheap and biosecure. If you are using seawater, you may be exposing pathogens to your fish.

My koi fish is swimming in big circles all over my 40gal fish tank and he has red sores I heard of dip baths

Hello, thanks for the comment, be sure and quarantine the fish from any others. Generally, salt is for parasites or bacteria issues, and may help with a bacterial infection that could be causing the sores. Check in with your local aquarium about some treatment options, maybe melafix or pimafix. Unless diagnosed, it may be hard to treat. Salt dips can also be done, but do some research first on dipping your koi and what others have found effective, adding aquarium salt to a quarantine tank following the brand's instructions may also help to heal the sores and prevent further infection.

How do I do a dip treatment for a Steel Blue Killifish as it’s tropical freshwater fish. Don’t want to create to much of a shock to the fish

We do not have experience in ornamentals, please do further research before doing a dip on ornamentals, especially if they are young or small fish.
