Salt spring! Something about this banjo is just so well suited to mellow songs like this. I'm playing around with how best to hold it, as you might have noticed, especially towards the end. The closer I hold it to me, the more muted the sound is, and the farther away, the more resonant and echo-y it is. Makes for some fun dynamics! Also starring in the video is my dog Schmudge, who has either developed an ear for banjo music, or is going deaf haha. Either way, he seemed to enjoy hanging out with me while I filmed this!
I'm in G tuning here, and playing my handmade woodtop gourd banjo, made by Jesse Head! If you want to check out his other work (he makes lots of cool gourd/wood instruments) and maybe get a banjo of your own, you can find him at his website jesseheadnaturalluthiership.com/ and follow him on instagram at / head_jesse
If you'd like to support my channel, go check out my patreon! patreon.com/PhoebeSanders And if you want a little extra banjo fun, head on over to my instagram! / phoebesandersbanjo

The gourd banjo has a lovely mellow sound. I think it would be very good for playing living room concerts or with unamplified instruments in a smaller setting. The banjo is such a thing of beauty as well. A real work of craftsmanship and the Maker's love of the materials shows so brilliantly

You always remind of the joy of getting lost in a song where technique isn't a thought and what your fingers do they do on their own and you get to just enjoy playing. Love the surprised look when you climb up the neck and get it right. I play amateurish guitar, and I know that joy.

I think that is the best sounding banjo I have ever heard! It is so mellow! I grew a gourd for making a gourd banjo last year. It is all dried out now, and ready to be made into something. The only problem is that...the gourd is 18" in diameter and 15" tall. Maybe it could be a gourd bass, but I'm not interested in playing the bass. I have some more gourd plants set out this year. I hope I can get some smaller ones...

It's getting awfully close to a bouzouki, only with single strings. But the tonal characteristics are very similar -- similar body shape and similar scale length too. Sort of a hybrid instrument. I really like it! It's got such a mellow, lyrical tone, but still possesses the undeniable character of a banjo. Super cool!

There's a handy trick that it seems you as the player would potentially be able to do with that sound hole being where it is... You can just roll the body towards your body at the top just a little and you have the ability to lower the volume while keeping your finger attack consistent, using your shirt as a sound-hole mute! :)

Love the gourd! Such a great sound. It resonates. Proper, sweet. You’re so good. Still trying to find Tom. You changed your knot. I’m going to watch it again, and again. Nice hands lady. I’ve got to go downstairs and get my trombones. Mouthpiece just got here. 6 1/2 al. I’ve been stuck with an 11 for years. The short cup and narrow Embouchure made for my studio work. Play your fiddle lady. Snot hard. Charlie Brown loves it when I hum the bass line. Nice puppy, little grey, good dog.

I been watching this channel since it was just exam performances. That was the sweetest audio ever! I'm kinda chuffed because when you asked about restringing your fretless with nylgut, I suggested a new one and perhaps a gourd. It was like I made a wish for you, and it came true. But now you need another, a fretless gourd. That sounded so good.
