So glad that you guys were able to get Rediviva seaworthy enough to get your lives back under sail and put her through an intensive set of sea trials, enroute to Mexico 🤙🏼 ). I remember the episode , about a year ago, where you were frustrated with not being ready yet with multiple engine/transmission problems and wondering if you were going to take a break from boat-building and walk away for a bit. However that call of the sea was persistent and your drive to splash wouldn’t come out of gear and you both pushed through. Now this episode has brought ,at least Garrett 😆,to the point of “ being motivated “ for more boat projects : by now you’re probably on the hard and in mid re-fit. ( Ruth, you just get cozy in the hammock and enjoy 😎 ). I just wanted to say a huge congratulations as not only have you two built a beautiful vessel but you’ve found yourselves back to your ‘ happy place ‘ ! Thanks for sharing your journey bringing us along with y’all and inspiring some of us to start looking for a sailboat of our own. See you next week for episode 252

I know exactly how you feel about building. After a long season of work it can feel like you’re just spinning your wheels and taking a break is exactly what’s needed. Kudos to y’all for avoiding the burnout and enjoying your hard work for a while! Now I’m looking forward to seeing the tender come together.

Im gonna start by building a dinghy. I dont even know how to sail yet, but I can surely learn on it. Then, with the experience doing that, and with the wisdom gleaned from this and many other channels, I can build a larger ship to take myself, my wife, 3 kids and a dog voyaging around the north Atlantic with.

Oh fantastic sailing with a spinnaker, ive seen some sailers use a halyard clip for the bowsprit so you pull the pin string and it drops the sail connection at the bow before bringing the sail down.almost better than the sock. Ruth and Garret your both looking fantastic, as good as the days we spent in Avalon with you.

TOP SPINNAKER TIP. Not easy to explain but very easy to tack. Take the spinnaker up with you halyard as usual, BUT, each of the bottom corners have both a sheet and a tack line attached. (four lines at the bottom. Two lines at each corner ) The sheet lines work the same as they normally would, lead aft outside of your rigging, same as any sheet. BUT, the other two lines (attached at each bottom corners) are lead through an eye at the bow and then back aft. Pulling on either of these lines will pull that corner of the sail to the eye at the bow, making that corner the new tack. So, you let one out while you pull the other in (while easing you sheet for whatever tack you are on) and the sail changes sides. I did this all the while when single handing. It is also a good way of de-powering the sail to get it down, just pull both tack lines in.

Doing nothing has always been a foundational cornerstone of embarking on life-changing work and assorted projects that go with it. Three cheers for long hefty dreamy napping! Kick back. You guys have more than earned a bit of leisured mundanity. Go for it

I have a symmetrical for my Cape Dory 27. I can get at least on an apparent reach before it starts luffing. Thing screams! I made a spar, out of drift wood, that I lash to the deck and the rail. Basically, it would bisect a sprit and a cat head of I had one. I use it to pole the kite, the Genoa, or a shade sail (tarp)

Her music curation is always most excellent. I subscribe to youtube channels that, while the content is excellent, the person puts the most annoying Phillip Phillips style junk on his videos which really ruins it. Leo Sampson at Tally Ho does a great job. Bad Obsession Motorsports does a TERRIBLE job tho I love the content, same with Trent Palmer. It's kinda hit or miss.

Wow, I was rather surprised at the amount of bottom growth on Rediviva. I don’t have much experience with sailboats and sailing but I can tell you that even half or a third that much bottom growth on a 42 to 48 foot sport fisher Chesapeake Dead-Rise would cut top speed by a couple of knots but more importantly hurt fuel economy a several of gallons of fuel per hour at cruise and even more so if she was put on the pins. On the boats I have owned and worked on over the years we always spent at least one afternoon a week cleaning the hull. Being vigilant about keeping the hull clean meant that rarely did we ever have to break out the “scrapping irons” (stiff putty knives) and that we could just use stiff scrub brushes and green and red scotchbrite pads. Additionally when cleaning the hull a hookah snorkel system is extremely useful. Me myself and I if sailing in the warm pacific waters that our esteemed video hosts are I would consider doing daily dives and spend an hour or so cleaning a section of hull each day but that is just me. Note this is not intended to be à criticism just my personal opinion and past experiences of how bottom growth effects the performance of motor powered vessels and how on boats I have been on we took care of the issue associated with it.
