As as schoolboy my Dad and Uncle bought neglected wooden cruisers and did what today we would call driver grade restorations on them. I spent many, many summers sanding mahogany and teak decks and brightwork. The payoff was when I was allowed to follow along as Dad started with the varnish. One day he gave me the brush, and said, "you have watched enough son. I was vey proud of that deck hatch when it was done. The last boat they did was a 29 or 31 ft Owens with twin inboards. That boat needed complete engines on top of lotsa sanding) but those two fell in love with her (so Did I, I loved them all.) and we spent two years in the yard. Her rudders were unrecognizable with the growth. When she was relaunched the whole "yard rat" population was watching and clapping. I am 65 now, was about 10-12 when we launched that big girl, so..50 years? Summer days in the yards of Southern California. To this day if I get near fresh sanded decks or other brightwork, or smell varnish...I am transported back. You guys took me there tonight, too.

Just a comment from a retired boatyard worker: You might consider using a vacuum with your sanders. This is not just about the environment, it is about keeping the edge on the sandpaper. Bottom paint takes down the best sandpaper (which is worth finding and paying for because sharp sandpaper will your reduce your workload by way more than half. My fellow boatyard guys will tell you it is nuts to sand without vacuums--though we all thought it was nuts when it was first required.

Garrett and Ruth, Y'all have to be soo relieved by now, as I am sure that Rediviva is back on the water. Working in that heat was surely intolerable. I have to say that when I first saw the red/orange paint going on that all I could think of was WRONG COLOR and a sad Rediviva and Crew.. However, as each additional coat was applied the original color reappeared and Rediviva seemed to spring back to a happy state. She really looks great. I'm ready to see her back in the water again. I know that there had to be a celebration and a lot of sleeping after you relaunched her. Thank y'all for sharing. Cheers! Blue Skies and Fair Winds. Faithfully, James

That is the hard slog done and it does seem like forever when you are doing it. It looks to be a similar red to what I used for my 33' carvel wooden charter boat. I have spent many years in boat yards working on my boat and helping others with theirs and I used to work in one which was fantastic seeing the repairs make the boat look whole again. As far as I am concerned wooden boats are the best and much better character than plastic fantastic's and tin dishes.... I have had wooden boats all my life and also used to be a skipper at one of Melbourne's Australian Volunteer Coast Guard flotillas. I love watching your channel and what you both get up to. The hard work pays off always.

Just a tip for your stuffing box, drill and tap a hole in the housing and put in a s.s. grease fitting so you can keep it full of grease, to make easy to do, you can use copper tubing to make a remote location so its easy to grease. Had one on my 1926 wooden salmon troller for 38 years, when I came to the dock 3 or 4 pumps of grease and no leaks until you start motoring again. My wife and I fished salmon and crab out of SF for 40 years, not to far from where you built your boat.

Garrett and Ruth I know its too late this time but these few things will save you big time in the long run Get some "bare wood marine primer" preferably spirit base so it can be thinned .... start using it on just the bare wood above and below the water ... two coats 1st thinned about 50% second strait .... below water you can anti foul strait over it ...... topside I think a undercoat is best ... but try strait over if you like ...... thats how we done the boat I worked on and only needed a light hand sand and top coat every year when it was painted.... just spot repair where it is damaged With electrolysis I didnt see any on the rudder parts? ... a good sized one (im guessing a couple of pound for what you have) screwed on the back of the stern post then that can electrically connected to the rudder pins and stern bearing housing with monel wire ..... then on the rudder a one or two "tear drop" shaped ones and also conect to metal fittings with monel wire On steel boats we would weld 3/8" stainless bolts onto the hull at a set spacing so we could pre drill all the zinc blocks the same and change under water if needed Not sure on regulations there but we would also put a cup full of creosote to a gallon of anti fowling ..... slowed the growth down heaps when the boat was idle in the off season

She's looking beautiful again, and she's ready to hit the seas. Your boat is immediately recognizable upon entering a harbor or bay. It's not just her paint; it's her lines and rigging. I see her on other channels. You just can't miss her. Great job. And, by the way, it's ok to take a break while working to look at beautiful things. ;-) Have fun again. Pro- tip: In the future, you will find it much easier and faster to roll paint on from a 5-gallon bucket with a roller screen attached inside. Those little trays you use are good for small projects such as painting one door, but with bigger projects always use a bucket. For better coverage and cost savings ( Less paint needed) have the paint store put one drop of black coloring into each gallon of paint, you will get much better coverage, and your eye will not be able to detect the color difference. Hope this helps. Happy sailing.

Explain the theory behind the addition of a drop of black paint? How would that extend coverage? And why black-color paint? Thanks.
@bergman8520
@bergman8520 4 ай бұрын
It's not a drop of black paint, but a black tint. I don't know the chemical reasons why it works, it just does. Ask any painter how to make white paint cover better, if they are pros they will say the same.
