Thank you so much for the time you took to create this video. We are trying to educate ourselves as much as we can before we dive into the salt water world. With the cost of everything, I don't want to learn by trial and error. I really appreciate you taking time to explain each product and what it was for. I was taking notes and had to pause a few times. You did an excellent job and now on to find more of your videos! :-)

Hi Scorlin You can make any tank a saltwater tank. It depends on the type of Filtration you want to use for that particular tank. I would recommend the tank with overflows so that you can attach a sump filtration to your aquarium. If you are going to do a fish only saltwater tank. You can use hang on the back filters or canister filters. But if you were going to do a reef tank, I would highly recommend an aquarium that has overflows and can except a sump. Aquaticstart

With a frameless tank, care should be taken to install foam or a yoga mat under the tank in case there is any sort of debris on the stand or tank bottom to reduce the risk of shatter. I have the same tank only a 60 cube and love it.

i feel like i have to be something like a scientist just to have a saltwater tank. I'm clearly overwhelmed just thinking about all these steps and all these chemicals. super frustrated 😖
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Hello, don't be super frustrated. Setting up a saltwater tank is a straightforward process.
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Step one - decide where you gonna put your aquarium and let it be a place where doesn't get direct sunlight on to the tank. Step two - when you set up the stand and the tank, make sure to wipe down the inside of the glass with a clean paper towel. Then proceed to lay out your substrate in an even matter at the bottom of the tank. Step three - set up your hang on the back filter, your glass top and your lighting system on top of the tank. Mix the water for your aquarium in a clean Rubbermaid trashcan. Remember it is 1/2 cup of salt to 1 gallon of water and that is the ratio that you always use.
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Step four - after you mixing your water for at least 15 minutes, test the salinity with a hydrometer and make sure is between 1.021 to 1.024
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Step five - after you finish mixing the salt water place one of the bags that came with the gravel at the bottom of the tank to keep the sand from being agitated all over the place. Fill up your tank prime your hang on the back filter and let it run for 24 hours

.....And steps 2 & 3?
@joseCalderon19769 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't want to sound mean, but some of the things that you mentioned I disagree with.1) Hydrometers: They are not accurate enough to keep your salinity at 1.025 ppm. Get yourself a refractometer. 2) Chemipure Blue: I never rinse my Chemipure blue, since that is not recommended. It would just disrupt any junk that it has trapped and it would remove beneficial bacteria from it. I just keep filter floss in front of it, to keep junk away from my chemipure, and toss the filter floss after 2 days(very cheap and polishes your water). i also use Chemipure blue only for like 3 months maximum. After that, I highly doubt that it is doing anything good for your tank after that 3) Fake corals: I have never had any of these things in my tank. I just feel that they do not belong in any saltwater tank. They would probably be algae growers anyways and they are tacky to me. 4) Buffer: I have NEVER messed with one of these things. I only test for nitrates, nitrite, ammonia temperature and salinity. I have lived in two states CA and TX and never have checked for this. I just think that a good salt mix is needed like Red Sea Coral Pro. Check out my channel and take a look at my two nanoreef tanks. Honestly, last time a set up a tank like this, I ended up spending as much money as getting a cool rimless all-in-one tank(which is what I have now), which has the compartments that are needed for your media basket, heater and possible skimmer. I have a Nuvo Fusion 10G and a Nanocube 28G and love them both! By the way, I have been keeping mini reef tanks since 2005, so I got a little experience under my belt. Cheers.

jose Calderon Hi JoseThank you for stopping by. We are going to address each of your points individually. Remember, that this set up is a basic marine aquarium, not a reef or nano tank. Also, we took someone’s budget into account, while still using quality products that will stand the test of time. Let’s start with the hydrometer. The one that we recommend is the Deep Six Hydrometer by Coralife. This particular Hydrometer is temperature-corrected and accurate to ±0.001 specific gravity units. In short, it is bang on with the accuracy that a hobbyist requires for a successful aquarium. The refractometer can cost $80 to $120 to achieve the same result. I do check the accuracy frequently with a refractometer and I always get matching fidelity. This unit has certified calibration for precise and reliable results at a fraction of the cost, which is around $7. As for the range of specific gravity is as follows: Marine Aquariums 1.021 - 1.023 Reef Aquariums 1.024 - 1.026 So, you’re right on the money for a reef Tank with 1.025, which is a great measurement. I look forward to comments and wish everyone success with their hobby. JoeAquatic Start LLC

Aquatic Start Hi, I have seen brand new refractometeres for as low as $35 brand new, and even less than that used. Remember, you can always buy good used equipment too. It's always better to get the best equipment that you can afford because in the end, it will last longer, perform better, it will have more value if you want to sell it, etc. Been there done that.

jose Calderon Hi Jose The second point you made should be taken with caution. Boyd Enterprises, who is the manufacture of Chem Pure - Chemi Pure Elite and Chemi Pure Blue instruct the user to rinse the media prior to placing it in your filter. And as for rinsing your media each month - it is extremely beneficial, you take all lose detritus material out of your system. Thanks for stopping by. Joe Aquatic Start LLC

That is basic chemistry, it is a compound that binds to phosphate most effectively and expensesly. It is not only used in Chemi pure blue, but industrywide as a compound to remove phosphates. There are other products and compounds out there that will remove phosphates from your aquarium, but do not do it as effectively.

I have a 20H i was wondering if i would have to put a power head seeing how the filter does move the water. I am planning on putting corals and a bubble tip.
@impaeratorae67669 жыл бұрын
You will most definitely want to put low flow powerheads, recommended flow is 10-15x for specimens like that, which means you will want to get powerheads of 200 - 300 gph combined.. so about 100-150 gph each. A main reason for this is so you don't have any dead spots on your sand/substrate, which leads to nitrites, nitrates in the long run, assuming the cycle is complete. Hope this helps.

What about the protien skimmer, and fan? Don't you need those for live rock? (done freshwater all my life, about to jump into saltwater!)
@AquaticStart7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren Thank you watching Aquaticstart TV. There are two basic types of saltwater aquariums. One is a Marine aquarium, was just fish and one is a reef aquarium with fish, invertebrates and corals. There are different types of equipment to use on each of these aquariums. My best advice would be to pick up a book at Barnes & Noble which will give you the breakdown on all types of equipment to use. It also is a great reference guide for you while you are in the hobby. One book that I would recommend would be - a Marine aquarium handbook.

hello, i started a saltwater tank yesterday. i have added the tapwater and added the neutralizer. can i go ahead and add the salt? and how long do i wait for the cycle before i can add my first two clown fishs. ps. i have a 55gallon tank
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge For watching Aquaticstart. I would recommend using seachem prime water conditioner, Kent super buffer and add your salt to the water. I would mix the salt in the water before placing the water in the tank. It is 1/2 cup of salt to each gallon of water. To cycle your tank, I would add start smart saltwater nitrifying bacteria, which instantly cycles your tank. I would let the tank run for 24 hours and then it is safe to add the clown fish. Remember for proper fill filtration of your aquarium, you must have biological, mechanical and chemical filtration. I would also recommend adding a koralia evolution pump to increase mechanical filtration. What type of filter do you have now?

my ph stays at 7.8 to 8.0
@AquaticStart8 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian In saltwater tanks your pH parameters should be between 8.3 to 7.8. So you're right in the ballpark. The closer you are to 8.3 the healthier your specimens and corals will be. One of the best ways to maintain this is using Seachem carbonate. This maintains your KH level at between 12 to 14 and will definitely stabilize your pH. If you are using a pH buffer, I would recommend API - as it does not add any phosphates to your water. As always enjoy your hobby and thanks for watching Aquaticstart
