I’ve been doing this for over 15 years! Clean them, put them in ice cold water until I’m finished, take them inside rinse them again, soak in ice cold salt water for 30 minutes, rinse all salt off, and finally put them in ice cold water and prepare the grease pat dry with paper towels and fry em up!

Yup learned this from my grandparents. We soak all our fish and small game in salt water.
