In the salt weathering technique tutorial I will show you how I use this technique to fade and weather the camouflage of my scale model aircraft. This technique is now on important part of my weathering process and I recommend it to everyone who wants to step his game up.

Excellent tutorial! I really like the subtle effect (noticeable but not too much), nice and random looking. I've tried salt, hairspray, oil paints, etc. - they all have their merits but salt is one of the quicker methods and easy to pull off. Nice work!

@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 4 жыл бұрын
I guess it makes most sense to do the salt weathering after you are done with the chipping, assuming that you have some camo. If you have BMF than the chipping is not applicable. At least I am not aware of a reason to do chipping on bare metal finish.

Hello. Excellent tutorial. I’ve got a question for advanced scale modelers. I got into modeling last summer when convalescing from major surgery. One thing that confounds me is that I’m attempting to build a clean model with no glue overflow or runout I’ve found it nigh impossible because none of the glues I have tried hold parts in place-particularly free standing parts which stick out of the model. This results in continuous tries to get the part to stick resulting in a mess. Yes, I tried using toothpicks, glue applying tools and disposable glue tips etc and a variety of glues but I always end up with some prominent parts having glue at the bonding locus. This is bedeviling. Even super glues fail when trying to affix PE. There is no known chemical or substance I know of which cleans up glue runout. Can someone help me please? I can build nice models using all manner of advanced weathering, painting and chipping techniques but my builds always have unsightly glue patches near difficult parts. I give up

A very interesting, subtle and fairly simple way to make stuff look old!! I like it. Question, and I'm asking because I really don't know, but how come you use black instead of brown or dark grey for the grime layer?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 6 жыл бұрын
Well I am assuming that there is more of a black dirt on deck like brake dust etc. If the aircraft is operated from dirt airfield then brown might be more appropriate.

Ok! Thanks for the tip!! Again, fine work. I am about to get back into modelling and I never got into weathering too heavily, just some pastel power work. I subscribed to your vids and for updates, can't wait to go through your library and apply all of these new (to me) techniques!! Ex: I previously had thought salt was only used on models for paint chipping. I have been reading Model Master and similar magazines for years and years, it's cool to see all of the detailed weathering happening as it goes on, vs pics. Got to ask when it be easier and quicker just to do stippling effect rather than using salt
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 3 жыл бұрын
Stippling will always be less involved process. But produces lesser results ( or just different ). So I guess that if you're doing a 1/72 helicopter or ww2 fighter its small enough to get away with stippling. But for larger surfaces salt technique is better IMO.

+Ednitram Thanks. I don't really know ratios. I put paint little by little and check the consistency on the wall of the paint cup. It is really as seen on the video, nothing more. Takes some practice.

Just quick question... Is that just basic table salt or what type of salt do you use?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 6 жыл бұрын
Just regular salt, for smaller scales it may be useful to grind it down.

any difference between using hairspray vs water for the salt to stick to?

I would worry hairspray may leave a film and would take more scrubbing to remove... but that’s just a guess

Hi! Thank you for the video! Sadly, I did not get results like yours, even with the accurate following of the steps... on the other hand, the salt somehow began to further crystallize with the water and sticked to the model so strongly, that I had to dilute it with plenty of water to get rid of it. Luckily, the paint job did not get destroyed or eaten by salt. To sum up, it is an interesting technique, but I messed up something, probably because I used sea-salt, not regular salt? Cheers!
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 6 жыл бұрын
Well, try again somewhere safe, like plastic spoon or something. It might be the sea salt.
@tullskull
@tullskull 2 жыл бұрын
I am just guessing here but it sounds like you might have the surface too wet when applying the salt. Try practicing with different amounts of wet or dryness. I think you want the surface to be just wet enough for the salt to stick. The type of salt shouldn't really matter, but maybe it does. so again you will have to find the correct level of dryness by which the sea-salt will stick but be easily removed. Good luck, you got this!

I use lacquers and acrylics but I think you should be fine with the enamels , just might need more time to dry.

Can you use this technique if you have already used the hairspray technique to do chipping?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 5 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not, if you worry about reactivating the hairspray with the water used in the salt weathering, give everything a clear coat and you should be fine. Test on apiece of scrap to be on the safe side 😃

MM Scale Models it’s restored! Heh I don’t have all the equipment you need for modeling but I love doing it so that’s a reason that it wasn’t painted the decals fell off and such, I also found out that a pencil smeared in the direction you please is a good gun stains / engine smoke stains same with smearing a sharpie ( with finger ) I use it as sorta a test plane because it’s in such rough shape even after restoring, it had 3 men I made fit in it and then I made another guy for it sadly I didn’t have a replacement part for the worst one where the glue messed it up and the paint went through the tape

@billyclement5141
@billyclement5141 4 жыл бұрын
@@Sgt-lott10 Don't stress it mate. Conventional brushes can capture any effect an airbrush can create, it just takes more effort and (sometimes) a bit of ingenuity. The same isn't true in reverse. Ultimately, it's the skill of the painter, not how fancy the tools they use are, that determines the end result. Airbrushing set ups are eye wateringly expensive, too. You can buy a lot of plastic for the price of even the most basic 'starter' bundles from the better known manufacturers. Having said that, if you can afford one, an airbrush is a whole lot of fun to use and can make some tricky or time consuming tasks ridiculously quick and easy. Be warned though, they can also be incredibly frustrating. Unlike a regular brush, it's not always obvious why the airbrush isn't doing what you want it to do. They have to be kept surgically clean for best results and every paint you use will have a slightly different consistency, meaning you need a slightly different air/thinner/retarder/flow improver/paint mix. If you use different types of paint- enamels and acrylics, say- then double what I just said. Some painters keep different brushes for each paint type they use!

What is the dilution ratio of subtle effect
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 8 ай бұрын
It is difficult to say because different brands of paint contain different amounts of pigment and are diluted differently. 90-95% thinner and the rest is paint generally. Test and see what works for you.
