what's wild is it is tame compared to MANY other films. No female nudity (a quick glimpse of Venetia butt in the field), no explicit sex, the male nudity was either in dark silhouette at the grave, or the dance in the end which is not in a sexual setting. No overt violence. And yet it;s so intensely erotic folks are losing their minds

That actually makes sense, because it's the kind of thing people probably thought was brilliant in the moment but actually kind of ruins the narrative. He loved Felix, but also hated him. The film obviously wants us to know that, regardless of what Ollie says (because he IS a liar), he always had feelings for Felix. I think the bathtub scene states this pretty plainly. However, by the time we get to the grave he's already killed Felix, so it seems reasonable to assume that he's officially made Saltburn his mission. I can understand the symbolic act of "desecrating" the grave, like I can understand removing the stones from the river, as an act of hate. But why was he crying? Was it upsetting him? Wasn't he, by then, just one step closer to his ultimate goal? It all seems a bit muddled, whereas I think if they had cut or changed that particular scene it might not have been so obvious. Nothing against Barry. I put things like that on whoever has final cut.

The unique thing about this movie is what threw people off the most imo. It's that we follow the villain instead of the hero. A lot of people dismissed Oliver's behavior because we don't expect to be in the villain POV. Some critics were saying that his behavior came out of nowhere, but Oliver displayed villain behavior from the start.
@heltaku939711 ай бұрын
I don't think there is a "hero" here. Felix is a stupid spoiled prince and just barely manages to be the nice one of his family. Every other character is some variety of garbage person. We actually sympathize with Oliver for not being just another privileged a-hole.

I agree. What’s been interesting, is myself and some of my friends who’ve encountered really manipulative partners in the past spent half the film throwing up all the red flags. And we have an unreliable narrator in him, from the first shot, he’s the one sitting there telling the story. Of course he was unassuming at first, of course he sees himself as the hero - a working class boy who’s desperate to get into wealth because look at the rich, who spoiled they are. ROXY was dead on with her reaction to the vampire scene. We know Venetia has body image issues - bulimia and rampant sexual behavior from the time she was a young teen. Her own mother shrugs it off and says the bulimia "isn't even working". Felix refers to her sexuality as "an embarrassment". Oliver was the first person to accept and adore all of Venetia - through his apparent (feigned?) concern about her bulimia and dom like insistence she care for herself, then fully accepting her body just as it is. That is indeed sexy as hell. Okay - this is long. Sorry! But I love this movie. It was so worth a second watch and a third - I took something new away each time. Powerful, gorgeous, evocative, thought provoking, memorable! Barry Keoghan is just stunning in this - I will line up to watch anything he does. For me, the top performance of the year. Loved him in Banshees - he was so real I actually had the thought it seemed exploitive of this poor simple minded boy, forgetting it was a performance by an actor! He is REAL in everything he does. Rosemond Pike & Cary Mulligan had me on the floor. Venetia is the most broken and sympathetic character - eaten from the inside, even by her own family. Farleigh is sort of in Ollie's position - the poor family member with a begging bowl. Maybe that's why he's so mean to Oliver - he can't accept that in himself. And no, he didn't "know" Oliver was bad news from the start - he was an asshole to him the first time he saw him crossing the campus quad - mocking his jacket. Mocks his poverty again in the rented tux scene. Very self hating, he turns it on Oliver. Jacob Elordi is so beautiful (thanks to Emerald for how she had him photographed as an object of desire). He's so charming and mesmerizing it wasn't till the 2nd watch that I realized how much like Elspeth he actually is - people are disposable when they stop entertaining him - but the audience falls under the same spell as Oliver does. And he and mom are as mush of a voyuerist as Ollie - they feed off the tales of woe and pain from Pamela and Ollie. Tell me ALL the gory details. My fave film of the year. That this film may not even get a cinematography nom is shocking. And the score and music was banging! Just exquisite film making!

This whole experience was fascinating...and it will stick with me for a very long time... One key moment I think is super important, is how Oliver pivots once he sees Pamela discarded by Elspeth, who has clearly grown bored of her and at that moment, Oliver realises that he can't succeed in maintaining a place in the family based just on his perceived deprivation alone So he has to start giving the family what they want to keep them all on his side...which he clearly does until Felix uncovers his deception

The setting of 2006 (or 2007 for everything at saltburn) lends a lot of cultural context, in the UK around that time everybody wanted to be rich and live this kind of life- and no one more than the upper-middle class (which Oliver is implied to be). There was (and still is) a tendency to feel embarrassed about being middle class here, so people try to either align themselves with the 'salt of the earth' working class or the ultra-rich upper class (working class people having an identity and community that's often fetishized by privileged people, explaining why Oliver chose that identity to ingratiate himself to Felix and his family.) Truly an eat the rich movie, but from an less explored pov!

25:06 when she's talking about Doppelgangers there's a Felix Doppelganger in the background (walking outside). I noticed it on my first watch, but the movie never came back to it.

Farleigh was supposed to be coked out of his mind during his monologue, so I'm not sure if I agree there. IMHO Felix and his family were monsters, too, so it was easy for me to not feel bad when they all met their ends. They used people and tossed them away, similar to what people do to unwanted pets. I loved the symbolism in the film (ex. blood/wine = Venetia).

ive never experienced people walking out of a movie theatre before, only a couple of us were there by the end. we were just a few that we left the theatre together and went for ice-cream. we've messaged pretty often since. thank u saltburn.

it's not as mind-boggling as everyone made it out to be but it's lowkey unhinged and i love it. i watched this with so much expectation, but even then, I wasn't bored or disappointed. the plot is pretty obvious but there was so much going on, i wasn't even focusing on the plot.

Very well-done review of the film. PLEASE review more of these indie/arthouse films. I am so glad that you both can see the beauty in this film by the way that it was shot and directed. Many cannot. EXCELLENT review. keep up the amazing work :)

the framing of Venetia telling the Doppleganger story and having Felix walk outside past the window, while the cutting to Felix at the table is so subtle but clever. Also see how you don't get this sense of pseudo satire of classism? People complaining about what isnt there is crazy to me.

this reaction is exactly why I don’t buy ppl online saying the movie was too predictable and the montages were unnecessary and they didn’t need to explain what happened. not everyone catches onto everything when they’re engrossed in a character or plotline. besides, the movie opened with a literal montage of felix (and talked abt him like he was already dead) and the rest of the movie, ofc they were gonna use a montage to explain everything at the end.

I'm pretty sure I read in an interview somewhere that Emerald has said that Oliver absolutely was genuinely in love with Felix, and that's the one time he lied to himself. Their chemistry was too much for me not to believe his obsession! Amazing movie - fun reaction to watch too :)

you know what's the worst part of this? over-the-top characters that you would find in an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery movie, don't exist. *THIS PEOPLE* do. manipulative, scheming, oblivious, unstable, obsessive, .... pretty much every chapter of a psychology book.
@michellebarry155511 ай бұрын
Shocked this film got snubbed for the Oscars. I guess it was too provocative for the Academy, which is a shame. This was such an interesting movie and I loved Oliver’s character arc. I loved Elspeth, she had some of the best lines.

I love the ending. I had to watch it again, and howled at him dancing at the end. His disgust at the rich even as he does everything to become them, to him dancing around this ‘precious’ place, this untouchable wealth (Felix listing off the history of the place back to Kings), and literally putting his d*ck on all of it. Even digging up the stones, a subtle f*ck your tradition, everything about this movie was brilliant. The shots, the music, the reflections throughout it showing us exactly how Olly was not what he was on the surface. So well done.

Felix was part of Saltburn and that was the obsession. But it makes you wonder how much he had studied the family and Saltburn before he started school. Did he already have a plan..... it was always about Saltburn.

At the beginning of the Oxford Christchurch College dining hall scene you mentioned that it looked like a Hogwarts - actually some scenes were really shot there, in the hall and at the stairs. I was there a few years back at a harry potter tour. Great reaction all the way through this phenomenal movie. Barry and Rosamund were so good, especially her onliners.. Hope the movie gets the recognition it deserves.

It is wild knowing that Barry Keoghan put himself on top of Jacob Elordi's grave and did his best not to get made fun of my the rest of the cast and crew behind this film. It's an even wilder film considering everyone isn't afraid of showing their sensitive areas on camera.

not sure if anyone’s mentioned this yet, but if you go back to the scene where oliver and felix throw in a stone for oliver’s “dead dad”, the rock doesn’t make it into the water, and instead lands in mud. hinting at oliver’s lies of him being dead in the first place! a cool observation i didn’t notice till i rewatched it. 🤓

Just noticed that when he's complimenting the families ceramics because they're done by a famous artist, it cuts to a shot of him looking through a book about Saltburn. I figured he was just admiring since he is a fan of these famous artists and they have an impressive collection of art, furniture, etc but now realize that he definitely just read some fun facts in a book he found laying around and totally lied about that too to score more brownie points.

I think there’s incest going on between Felix and Venetia. Like with Venetia’s conversation with Oliver I do believe that she was talking about her being one of Felix’s toys and even though he’s done with her, he still doesn’t want to share her with someone else. Idk maybe I’m just overthinking it but that’s how I interpreted it.

I love how Felix is an oblivious narcissist and the victim you sympathize with. He's affable and not malicious but just doesn't care since everything is easy. He enjoys willing women and pet friends, and just gets hold of the _wrong one._ He brought this virus of a sociopath into his home turf who wipes out his entire family. The magic trick is making the villain the POV character who lies to the audience and Felix and makes you buy in so your allegiances change. Everyone's gray and the butler is the Final Girl. There's no message nor lesson except beware who you trust. This is an erotic horror movie with shocks instead scares. Oliver's dance is the hawt equivalent of Leatherface whirling on the dirt road.

Same thought. When I watched this in the theater. My first reaction was this reminds me of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow). Also, Greg referenced it looks like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The camera angles and perspectives. Very much Hitchcock style. "Respect the game, Roxy". 😂😂
