Always wanted to visit there. I could NEVR get my Miss Tucker(RIP) on a leash. Here in Indiana, we've had some cold days (low of 5 last night) snow and ice the last 7-9 days. But starting tonight a warm from is coming and we shall see rain, mid '50s and possible T-Storms! My birthday is Friday the 18th and for once, it's not going to be -5 with 2-3' of snow on the ground! Anyway, glad it's warming up, my gas bill for heat will be outrageous, afraid to open it when it comes in a few days. ~ What was petroleum for the RV and Tater Tot on your drive, that's one thing you ddn't share. Thanks for sharing the Salton Sea and journey's Eric. It's always fun seeing stuff through others eyes and places I wish to be but will most likely never see. Happy Valentines Day *James*

It was AMAZING in the Tucson area today. Sunny, warm, and I just closed the doors and windows at 930 tonight because it's getting chilly. This is a huge change from last week (as well as recent weeks) where it was COLD as the sun was going down and getting down to the upper 20's every night. I am thrilled for this little warming trend but it's going to tapper back down this week. As for the kitties, I think exposing them to a variety of experiences is good for them. They may not be as adventurous in spirit as Jax but it's still good for them to have experiences and know they were safe and secure through it. Your a good pet dad.

In Boy Scouts, we used to go camping at the Salton Sea. But that was in the 60s, before the ecology of the Sea collapsed. It's an interesting area to explore. Anza-Borrego is also a great state park, but's now south of you. Nice to see the kitties out and about. Take care, and God bless.

Hi Eric. Some months ago, I watched a morning show and on that program there was a veterinary that explained about cats, when two cats eat next to each other, one of the cats will take over and eat the other cats food. The simple solution to the problem was, according to the vet; separate the eating places.

High for today was 14 but of course there is a wind chill too. We also have snow on the ground and ice under it. So enjoy watching you in that warm, warm weather. Thanks so much for sharing. Enjoy the cats too, we have four but they are all indoors cats. My mom lives with me and she has started feeding the wild birds. So the cats enjoy "bird tv" through their large living room window. Ah God bless you also that is from my mom....

Salton Sea was to be the next inland sea vacation dreamland. It died out when the toxic runoffs from farmlands north of it started killing the fish, which is what the majority of the beach "sand" is (fish bones) and the smell. My husband spent some summers in the 60's there with his family. It was an oasis then. It's in the 30's tonight here in the Sandhills of North Carolina.

California has a history of environmental damage from farming. The Salt and Sea was created by an accidental diversion of the Colorado River in 1905 in a sense the lake was man made in the 20th century. There had been lakes there in the past history but at that time it was dry until that diversion.

Pretty sure you know, but Balboa Park is phenomenal in San Diego. Several cool museums. Cars, military, etc. Of course there's Coronado Island. Old Town San Diego has some great mexican food shops. There the Carlsbad pier farther up the coast. Encinitas has a quaint main drag with cool shops. Beaches everywhere of course. There's the Naval base there in San Diego and from certain vantage points, you can see ships coming and going. A great place for your military followers in SD siteseeing is the National Cemetary at Cabrillo National Monument I believe, (Ft Rosecrans) as well as Point Loma Lighthouse within the Monument as well, which is very interesting and the view up there is really outstanding and overlooks the naval base. The perfect lines of the white crosses as you drive either to or from the Lighthouse is very moving and a great tribute to see as a testament for those who have served. PS, The Lighthouse has had some cool magnets, too! Haveva great time in SD. My parents lived there in retirement. Really beautiful.

I now live in South Ohio near Cincinnati. Cold and snowy here. In the early 1960's I lived in El Centro, California. Near Holtville and Mexicali. Water Skied and camped near the Salton Sea many many times!!! It was magic back then. Yes I remember Calipatria and Brawley. We used to go across the border into Mexicali and 'argue prices' for all kinds of leather belts, purses and hand made mexican items. Very fun. Vast starry night skies!! Awesome water skiing. I think it is all gone and destroyed now. Loved it back in the old days.

Well, HI 👋 from Michigan, I believe we were in the single digits, like 6 degrees this morning. The snow is pretty iced over and we have to be careful walking across a parking lot where there are ice-y patches. We've had enough snow that there are very tall piles of snow all around the parking lots where the snow plows have pushed the snow multiples of times. I'm ready to be finished with winter. We did have great sunshine today but I don't believe our temperatures even got to 20. Maybe tomorrow will hit 21??? Safe travels and thanks for taking us to the Salton Sea. And that was sure a tall, tall, tall flagpole. Kisses and hugs for Valentines 💝 Day.

I believe the Salton Sea was filled from overflow from the Colorado river, or a stream that is now used by all the farms in Yuma. One of the reasons it's smelly is because they use run-off from the farms, and it has too many chemicals and sometimes kill the fish. I think, it's been a while since I read the details. It was a great resort idea that didn't really think through the water issue, in the desert... I'd love to visit there sometime, but of course it's best to do what you've done, go in the winter!

The history of Salton Sea and how it was created is a very interesting read. If you were to go to the furthest southern end of the sea you'll find all the fish carcass/bones that cause the stink. There is no real inlet for fresh water and any that exits is toward Mexico. As the water evaporates, more salinity is created. Last I know only Tilapia can survive, but maybe even they are gone now too. If you were to stay on the other (windward) side at Salton City or Desert Shores you don't get the stink. When I was a kid living in San Diego in the 60s (born & raised there) my parents received many invitations to buy property at the "next mecca of SoCal". The water was still fresh and supported boating, even a Yacht club, fishing and water stuff like swimming. Through the years it was all a bust including streets and phony utilities that were never hooked up in the 50s and 60s. I lived in Desert Shores and worked in Palm Springs area about 40 yrs ago.

Hi Eric, I heard your water pump pulsing when you opened the tap slightly for some water in the kitties bowls. Maybe consider a SEAFLO Pre-Pressurized Accumulator Tank from Amazon which you install in line after the water pump outlet which will give you a nice constant flow without the pulsing. It will also extend the life of the water pump as the micro switch won't be switching on and off so often. ;)

The sand at the Salton Sea is fish bones. It smelled like rotten eggs, but the source of what California officials called a "very large and unusual odour event" has been traced to rotten fish. Official inspectors confirmed the culprit was in fact concentrations of gas produced by decaying fish.
