Thanks for Lesson 2. I really was paying attention and learned lots. In the meantime, Aldi had marked down £95 inflatable kayaks to just £30! We bought two - one each. The quality is quite good, but of course they didn't sell the pumps to inflate them so we'll get one from Amazon. No hurry though as we're close to the busiest set of locks on the whole canal network - not my kind of kayaking!

So, to answer Ruth's "why" question, it's two lap joints over a butt joint. In traditional construction we'd use gussets; no scarf joints. It simplifies the build for the amateur builder. I feel Garrett's "pain" with the CLC format. My first build was John Gardner's pram from "Building Classic Small Craft". Like George Buehler, there was a lot left to common sense and figuring stuff out. I learned a lot and enjoyed the build. I ordered plans for a Glen-L boat once and quickly lost interest in the full size plans. I enjoy the lofting and measuring and traditional skills. It's not for everybody. But, at the end of the day, you'll have a new tender, and that's what matters. Garrett can creative with the finish out, spars, and oars. Cheers!

My 10 ft scow, which I designed myself, is made entirely out of 1/4 inch plywood, except for the frames. The lee board and rudder are made of two layers glued together. This, done on a flat surface, insures that they stay reasonably straight. Maybe this is why the skeg on your boat is in two layers.
@garykuiken6191

I suspect two 3/8 pieces are stronger than one 3/4 inch piece. The two finished surfaces when glued together results in a stronger unit. That's my thoughts.

I wonder if you ever wondered about1/4-3/8" dowel rods to locate each of the pieces to be joined by epoxy glue. Drill the holes and insert dowel rod for uniform location; after gluing you could simply cut of the excess dowel rods with a Japanese pull saw. No worries about wet slippery epoxied surfaces moving around on you. A small dowel in the glued-up pieces would not degrade strength in any way. You might even layer a thin wooden scab piece over each cut dowel end, to insure that water doesn't degrade dowel joints over the years of use.

Hi guys!! Nice little dinghy !! As for the daggerboard, once you hit some under water rock, etc. Make the rear part of the daggerboard box, and round the daggerboards front corner, so it will be easier pressed up. I have sailed a Laser one summer, and its daggerboard always stuck, once I hit some obstacle. So, back it beach, fold the mast, and force the daggerboard loose.....Aft side was very sharp, that was the reason for getting stuck, almost every time. Very frustrating. Reinforce the front curve with some thin metal,either on top, or insrert a "boumerang" of stainless steel,which will take the punch, once you hit something, Anyway, just some reflections over the daggerboards. Personally, I among my boats, I have a Finn dinghy, named for the Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952, and was given its name by the swedish dude, who constructed the dinghy. Measurement in meters. 4.50 long, 1.60 wide and 10 square meter sail.No shrouds. The centerboard, 8 mm aluminium, fold back and up when hit something.My rudder is in two parts, so in colission, the lower part just fold back, but still works.....So,if no foldable daggerboard, at least have a divided rudder. As for sails, perhaps a spritboom sail?? No boom to duck under, and lower that the ordinary Bermuda rig...... Ok, allda bestest from mikke in sweden..;-D

I’m only partway through the video but, maybe I can answer a question you posed. I think the kits are cut on a CNC machine and most are thin walled like the kayaks. Fiberglass and epoxy add the additional strength. So , ease of cutting, having smaller quantities of inventory, thus the thinner boards. This of course is only a guess. Now I’ll go back to watch you build and look for your progress in next week’s video. All the best, Hal

Building a boat is like taking a journey, learning about things along the way. Later when that journey is finished you embark on another, but this time you get to enjoy the results of your first. sometimes, some people enjoy the 1st without bothering about the 2nd, or cant be bothered about the 1st. I have been building a Tolman widebody skiff now for about 15years, but health issues have nearly put a stop to it. I might have to employ some help to get the job done, just to get the satisfaction to see the completion of that part of my life's journey. Happy building guys - les from NZ

Great video. I am building a SCAMP from scratch. I agree that kit plans tend to drawn as a guide for kit builders. Though the SCAMP plan gave the dimensions of the full size pieces, rather than dimensions of the kit pieces. I have salivated over many of the CLC boats, but after seeing a couple of them built it seems they are overly complicated. Hopefully their kayak plans are simpler.

When making a wood sandwich, instead of using nails as markers, drill a number of holes through all layers at the same time. Then CA glue dowels in the holes on the bottom layer. Epoxy each piece and just lower them onto each other using the do we l sf for alignment. The dowels will hold the pieces in alignment so you then just need to clamp them.

i suspect the design decision to glue two pieces of thinner wood together rather than use one thicker one was to eliminate the use of power tools. for instance, lap joints, dado joints and rabbets can be created without the use of power tools by offsetting two thinner pieces before gluing. in addition, i imagine that the wood pieces in a kit are cut using a CNC machine and cutting two thinner pieces, although redundant, is less expensive thab cutting once from a thicker piece. cutting tools do not have to be changed and securing of plywood to the cutting surface is streamlined due to the uniformity of thickness. as a consequence setup time, in general, is reduced, which saves money. IOW, i think the author is right, most of the design decisions were optimised for kit production with the kit builder in mind.

Garrett, the "using 8 sheets of 3/8 for the entire build" thing is purely cost related. Considering a lot of people building sailing dinghies are doing it on a budget, cutting down on extra sheets of ply can make a difference.
@JagLite

I loved having a sailing/rowing dinghy on my boat and I explored a lot of bays while sailing it. But I liked having an inflatable too for going ashore through the surf and other times when a rigid dinghy was not as good. Having both opened up a lot of opportunities. My favorite was the round hull 10 foot hard dink by far. I kept the Avon in the bag stowed unless needed. Never ever leave either in the water overnight. Sail on guys!

on epoxy boats, 2 part epoxy primer and two part epoxy marine paint. You can paint epoxy boats with a high quality enamel. However, epoxy has to cover all wood entirely. Epoxy must be covered so not to be exposed to the sun, which, over time destroys the epoxy.
@delukxy
@delukxy Ай бұрын
@@TreasureoftheSunMexico My comment wasn't for alternate finishes, rather the possible coatings in order of application. However it would be nice to see "Little Red" with the outer hull red and the internals finished the same as the natural wood on Rediviva.

A few years ago my brother and I wanted to build a couple canoes for the Colorado river and we got a pattern kit like that when we had to we did a lot of gluing and laminating and stuff but we took our patterns we took a pizza cutter heavy duty one and cut notches out of it so it was like 30 little teeny nails if you know what I mean and we just rolled it along and it poked holes every quarter inch along the whole entire pattern the pattern. The reason why they have you laminate and glue multiple pieces together it tremendously increases the strength value at least that's how my brother explained it to me
@dreamjewels
@dreamjewels Ай бұрын
Hi, When laminating two or more pieces together put the glue / resin on and then sprinkle a small pinch of salt on the wet glue. This will stop the sliding action and once clamped it disolves into the glus/resin. I use this method laminating timber to make bowls on the lathe so I know it is a strong joint. Love your videos, keep it up. Regards from New Zealand

Too late now for this comment suggestion: I would have a large format print house make accurate copies of the paper templates. Then, I would purchase a quantity of 1/4 in Masonite sheets. Then I can adhesive spray mount (3M 77) the paper templates (front or back) to the Masonite and cutout the full frames. Then go to town with a big router and pattern bit. Likely not neighborhood friendly. Then, I would produce as many tender pieces as needed and try things like tri-ply foam sandwiches and bamboo lay ups or carbon or frp or.... If the print house scans the drawings you could vector the output and make your very own kit. Have it plasma cut out of 6061 aluminum sheets and tig weld it. It's recyclable too. Yeah, THAT'S THE TICKET. Like, Boeing but, just not the flying part. Good?

I just finished a CLC kayak kit - in general it went together pretty well, but there were some serious errors and omissions in the build manual, as well as having been sent some incorrect pieces. Pretty frustrating, and odd, considering the design had been in production for about 20 years, with thousands sold. Point being, you definitely have to think through every move, and don't assume the instructions are flawless.
