When I was a pattern maker and needed several panels of the same size, I'd use double sided tape to keep the plexiglass/plywood/styrene sheets together and then peel them apart when cut out. And to trace the pattern on the sheet from a to size blueprint, I used a Wartenberg Pinwheel.

It's lovely to see this dinghy coming together, especially the stitch bit, which I understood in practice but never saw done. So next week's episode is much awaited. I am, indeed, agog. It was also a joy to get online as we're moored in an almost Internet black hole and having to work when data is not streaming but trickling can be so stressful! I'm sure you guys can relate to that!

This brings back so many memories of yesteryear, building a stitch and glue kayak from plans. It was back in the 70’s and I was 13 years old. Didn’t come out too badly either, which I think was a bit of a surprise to my family who’d figured I’d probably get bored with doing it and quit before it was finished. I spent so much time exploring the creeks in it, going down the estuary, crossing over to the village on the other side way down where it met the sea. It gave me mobility, freedom to find new places and new friends, to hang around harbours, boatyard slips and eventually the sailing club where I got offered my first chance to crew for a Sunday afternoon race, which was the door to a lifetime of sailing. It got handed down to my younger step-brother and he in turn handed it down to his kids. If I remember rightly I taped the scarfs too, having had one issue a slightly ominous gentle cracking noise when I was stitching it all together. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Still loving the super-chilled pace of your vids, your narration and the tunes that weave throughout to gentle it all along. Take care and stay well, both of you. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

Hi Garrett and Ruth , I should have commented earlier. I did the same type of build once but insted of punching holes , I used carbon paper under the plans and traced the plans lines , super easy . Cheers Gary

Many years ago my dad taught me to build model RC planes from Balsa wood. Tracing the plans was the same process, however after the holes were made, we used a sock with blue chalk powder in over the plans which revealed the holes once the plans were lifted up. Great job guus

I was recommended a few years back when I built my first Stitch and Tape to smooth down to the line square then cut a 45 aris for half the thickness of the ply on the inside edge, when cutting out. For some reason it means the panels catch of that inside edge and move smoothly across each other as they are pulled in tight. Which is the other tip don't get too fussy on tightness and smoothness until the final panel is in and then worry about shape and gaps. By the way there will be gaps and imperfections get the shape right and epoxy fillet material takes care of the rest. I still have that first dinghy and use it as my tender. I have built a few since for other people.

Nice work! I took the easy way with the full kit (Passagemaker), but can understand your reasoning. I added more fiberglass than what was called for, in particular on the skeg / bottom of the boat. When you get around to the transom pickup some 1/4" or 3/8" aluminum sheet from Home Depot and add it both inside and outside for the motor mount. I just used 4200 to attach it, figuring it would probably be sacrificial. Now that you decided to paint the boat, don't worry to much how the fillets on the seams look. Once you paint over the seams it hides most of the imperfections.

Hi there u 2 !! As a dinghy will be sort of manhandled, put fenders along the gunnels, permanently,so no handling of loose fenders, since you might have lots of actions when arriving to the mother ship. Also alu band under the dinghy, taking the friction when landing. Good luck!! mikke in sweden..;-D

Looking good Garrett! One of the things Im not crazy about is the plans having you double up the sheets on the planking pattern when cuttng out. This puts a potential weak point having all the seams inline ( starbord to port) with each other. Id have swapped the seams end for end prior to cutting, but thats just me.... excited to follow along! Ive never built a boat but have done hundreds of hours of pattern work. I had the luxury of a plotter and would print out my patterns, spray glue them to sheet goods, then make wood patterns to rout from, this allowed me to replicate an infinite number of times, one step further would be a CNC but who can afford that! Maybe this will inspire me to finally build the Catamaran ive got plans for.

If there was a way to be found to tie up a fishing line/similar polymer based fine thread, that would be the best stitch. Those copper ones tend to oxidize and break free from the glue, if leaved in place. Or, zip ties. Leave the knot inside. I would definitely spend a year trying to find a zip tie that doesn't melt in epoxy.

It would be really interesting if you could break down your costs for vs the kit. Exclude everything like tools. Just the cost of sourcing he materials vs getting the materials from a kit. I have seen wildly different comments from , 'you cant get it much cheaper than the kit' to you can save a ton sourcing materials yourself. For people into boat building the CLC kits vs plans come up alot.

Hooray for AI! how to copy gently curved lines from the lofting drawing Sent by Copilot: Copying gently curved lines from a lofting drawing involves a few key steps to ensure accuracy and smoothness. Here’s a general guide: Prepare Your Tools: You’ll need a flexible batten (a long, thin strip of wood or plastic), weights or nails to hold the batten in place, a pencil, and a large sheet of paper or plywood. Set Up the Drawing Surface: Lay out your paper or plywood on a flat surface. Ensure it’s large enough to accommodate the full-size drawing of the curved lines. Mark Reference Points: Using the lofting drawing, mark the key reference points on your drawing surface. These points are usually derived from a table of offsets, which provides precise measurements for the curves1. Position the Batten: Place the batten so that it passes through the marked reference points. The batten should be flexible enough to bend smoothly without kinking. Secure the Batten: Use weights or nails to hold the batten in place at the reference points. Ensure it forms a smooth, fair curve. Trace the Curve: Once the batten is secured, trace along its edge with a pencil to copy the curved line onto your drawing surface2. Check for Fairness: After tracing, remove the batten and check the curve for fairness. It should be smooth and continuous without any abrupt changes in direction. Adjust if Necessary: If the curve isn’t fair, adjust the position of the batten and trace again until you achieve a smooth line. This method ensures that the curves you copy are accurate and fair, which is crucial for the construction process
