Used to fish Dungie a lot back in the day , the beach would be lined with Anglers , had some good Cod and Bass from there , , stopped going because of the doggies and pin whiting , no cod to eat them anymore

In the eighties, when the cod were in close, anglers would have used that small whiting as bait for the Big Cod! I remember reading John Darlings great articles on fishing Dungie. I fished there regularly in the Winter months through the late 70s and early 80s. I caught all sorts of fish including Whiting,Codling, Bass, flatties,but never got the double figure cod. It wasn’t from lack of trying! Never caught a Dog fish there ever!
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Yep the times have changed. I wonder how much are natural cycles and how much over fishing ? I’ve read all the John Darling books and often romanticise over those golden days. Can’t believe you haven’t caught a doggy there

Yea thanks bobbob I do wonder about night fishing - I did release a load of whiting and one came back inside one of many bottles. Think it’s the way the bay sweeps round past the point it’s a natural stop for rubbish and dogs!

Remember those I was the one with John Darling in those bays, will never see it again 70 - 100lb of cod on a 4- 5 hour trip over top of the tide. Only ever used single black lug, dug down behind the range.

Great video Matt and a hard days fishing with plenty of fish. Catching much the same here in broadstairs but the whiting seem to be on the small side. How do you rate shellfish baits? Loads of limpets here and I have been told they can be a good bass bait. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Best wishes Dave

History lesson. In 1941/42 the winter was one of the worst for over 50 years.. the cod spawned as usual BUT because it was indeed so cold the cod fry Usual predators i.e mackerel, whitting, herring were driven off into much deeper warmer water. Hence the year class was phenomenal for over 20 years years. ( Bear in mind trawlers didn't have the electronics they have today.). So catches were much smaller, plus the fish carried on breeding in later years... This is why the fishing was so good from the shore again even without the rods n reels of today..... Now move forward to the winter of 1963.. THE EXACT SAME THING happened AGAIN... well it doesn't take a genius to work out why we had it so good until the early 1980... Sadly these fish got totally fished out and hence why its dire at Dungeness now. Ok the odd decent fish does pop up but nothing like it was.. As rods and reels improved its easy to see why it was outstanding. Along with improved casting techniques developed by the likes of Les Moncreff Terry Carrol Neil Mckellow Paul kerry And last but certainly not least Alan Yeates... With the average trawler with a wheelhouse like the Apollo space program is it any wonder the fish were totally wiped out... But we did have a slight improvement following the winter of 2010 when it froze for 6/7 weeks. But with not enough fish to breed heavily it didn't last... so those that fished from say 1966 》 1980.. Had the golden period of it.... Funnily you can equate this periods where the cod got wiped out with the arrival of the dreaded DOGFISH.... Because exactly the same thing happened at the other cod mecca in the time above ... CHESIL BEACH.....
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Great input Thanks . It’s always worth thinking of fish in successful breeding years I like the idea that there may be hope (despite those mega trawlers) you mention. Grew up on those names from Sea Angler magazine. Did you mean Alan Yates ? He was more the match man than caster wasn’t he. I remember writing to him a few times ! I like your reasoning on dogfish , like thornback and smoothound can now be caught on lug inshore. Signs that something is effecting their normal habits . Appreciate the input🫡

@@SaltwaterAngler my pleasure.. i did indeed mean Alan but for his rig streamlining which obviously got us further out to deeper waters and naturally the fish. 😉👍

Didn't realise that the fishing was so poor at Dungeness these days. If that was a typical day it wasn't worth the effort of getting there. When I last fished there, about 1962 you'd have got a nice big bag of eatable cod at this time of year.
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Ohh to go back to 1962 ! Yea the only thing is that it’s bite a chuck for dogs and tings so for the beginner an really good opportunity to feel something on the line . Also I do wonder if there is some more interesting species being beaten to the bait. As for the Cod… maybe one day they will return
