Nice one thanks Matt! Lots of interesting info there. I didn't realise Shimano made a reel for £20! Huge collection of lures too. As I've mentioned, I can't get out as often as I would like due to health issues, but that first Bass I caught last year fell to a SG Panic Prey surface lure, so have just received a slightly bigger/heavier 28gm one for some extra distance. I do love SG gear! Stay safe & well! Dave.

Nice haul 👍🏻. That dialuna will cast 21g easily, and its not a glass tip its so called tough tech high-strength carbon , its designed for a delicate presentation of the smaller lures in a calm water with no current and to detect gentle bites. Japanese spinning rods are very specific and every model is designed for a very specific fishing conditions or even some regions in japan.

Ahh thanks for that ! I can think of some conditions it might be useful here in the U.K. - I’m not convinced it will cast 21 go yet but that’s the old fashioned angler in me I recon.

That Rapala Sliver has caught me more bass than any other lure, in low light. Superb lure that has been hit within a couple of casts,when they have avoided other well known lures. Those Ugly Stiks are virtually indestructible in normal use. I have several for boat and kayak. Nice action, robust, durable and seem to go on forever. In contrast, that Shimano rod looks like it won’t last two minutes in the UK. We’ll have to see if it is still in one piece in a couple of years Matt. Nice video.

I caught a 74cm bass from a local estuary on a Major Craft N-One 8’9” 3-16gm solid tip rod very similar to the Shimano about 3 years ago! They can cast the rating casting style needs adjusting but I use lures from the smallest Fiiish Minnows to metals at 16gm.

Interesting to know how you get on with the Dialuna. With it having such a fine tip means the rod eyes will be on the small size which in my experience using the Fladen Warbird travel rod (ask recommended by Fishlocker ☹ ) means guaranteed wind knots as the line just won't pass through the eyes fast enough. With that in mind I have some new rod rings coming off eBay so I will be whipping the top section soon for a week on Tresco hitting the Pollock and Wrasse🤞
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler 2 жыл бұрын
Ohh I like the sound of your latest trip ! I’ve not yet had a problem with smaller eyes on my rods , definitely feathering the cast has helped me and also using lures that don’t catch the wind ( like jointed lighter plugs) helps. What size spool do you use on the travel rod - maybe a smaller spool size could aid the wind knots ? Thanks as always for your comments and good luck on those pollack and wrasse

How long where you chasing your first lure caught bass ? And is the first the hardest to catch? Asking for a friend 😆😭
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David. This is a really interesting question. It took me many attempts before i caught my first Bass. Targeting them on Lures made things harder but that first one on beachy head ledge was on a rapala j13 in silver if i remember. I think my 5th attempt. The game changer for me was watching a more experienced angler get 5 or six decent fish on the same ground i was fishing at Cow gap in Eastbourne. He was using live sandeel and it blew me away, i wanted the same results. Its easy for me to say but i wouldn't worry just keep going until (your friend) stops learning. Honestly writing down your catch reports shows where you may need to improve. Its taken me decades to know what when and how and even then i cant guarantee a fish. Theres no easy route to this fishing but the best Anglers i know. 1. Are fascinated why they don't catch 2. Have a game plan- right state of tide, lure choice etc. 3. Always asking questions. The great John Darling said to me once- When you decide your going to be a bass angler and you engross your self in the bass world. You might not catch in time you will start to see fish. This really stuck with me because it meant i was in the right place. He was right and this really helped because i started seeing the bass, maybe following a lure or as i remember well coming behind me in the clear water in Inch strand in Ireland. This is more of moment than catching early on i think. I can tell you one thing the novelty of catching a bass doesn't wear off- the efforts are worth it Please keep us updated on your friends bassing Tight lines Matt

He often stopped mid cast and hooked a trout a meter to his left or right which ment he was constantly switched on watching the water. I took him out last year and he asked me where I learned to cast like that I said watching him, just shows its not just about catching fish. Ps. Got one of your stickers last week and it will be seeing alot of Ireland this coming year. Thanks for your reply.
