The fact that Infinite and Metal both have a similar wrinkle to their dynamic to Sonic and The Rookie, but show how badly it could go if Sonic kept ignoring it, is a cherry on top. Sonic realizes there's a problem with how he's been treating the situation and as a result devaluing the input of someone he called a friend... and owns up to it and does what he can to ensure he learns from that mistake. While Metal doesn't outright blame Infinite for any failings, he refuses to accept any greater responsibility for said failings even though he's the one who brought them about, and then dismisses Infinite's concerns as pointless and thus amplifies the friction.

I think the reason fans can even do stuff like this to begin with is because of how relaxed SEGA is with these kind of things. And I kinda think it's on purpose to find talented people to potentially hire like how Sonic Mania had a lot of people who made good fan games on the team. Generally speaking Sonic team has some of the best fan interaction out of any studio or company I've seen. And it just makes this little Sonic renaissance that's happening all the better.
