On the subject of Mephiles, if you pay close attention, you can tell that he's actually from AFTER the events of Sonic 06, after being erased from history. When the fight starts, he says, "I'll defeat you, and RESTORE MYSELF TO THE TIMELINE." Then, in the end, he screams, "I WANT TO EXIST!" Which seems to be a strong indication that Mephiles is referring to being erased when Elise blew out the flame of Solaris, but likely as a result of the White Space literally existing outside of time, an aspect of him still exists, trying to claw his way back in.

It gets even better, because the Gizoid being canon confirms that Sonic Battle is canon. From that, we know that Rouge is one of the few people to have read Gerald’s journal. There’s a scene where Rouge actually does comfort Shadow. He’s worried about having been created to be a weapon of war (against the Black Arms), but Rouge reassures him that he was created to be a hero because he has Maria’s soul. Rouge assured Shadow that his creator loved him like family, and encouraged him to cherish the time he gained with them from the time shenanigans. I am very normal about Team Dark, you guys

The reason why people complained about the other characters was mainly that their play style sucked. Frontiers' dlc shows they are planning to introduce more characters to the games by making it a sorta testbed for Tails, Knuckles and Amy; the characters the are the "priority" to implement in modern sonic games. Silver though is the one that is probably the most tricky to implement right given it's very different while trying to keep the general pace to the movement. Or give him a weapon like chakrams.

This is the official sonic fan fiction we allways wanted, not only is the gameplay good the story ties into so much of the existing lore and worldbuilding and uses it pretty well to make an emotional resonant narrative that ties up Shadows Charackter arc really well. Also the idea of Mephilis desperately trying to reinsert himself into the timeline is the coolest sonic writing i have ever seen, wonder if this is hinting at future events. Would love to see the Sonic 06 that could have been, officially realized. Dont wanna jinx it but Shadow and Sonic might finally be back...

Just in general, a sunset is the end of one day and the start of another- the sun leaving for a little while. His family is his light. For Shadow, the "sunset" is end of one chapter in his life and the start of a new one. After Shadow runs off and the two are gone, you can see the place is completely dark too; gone for good (but not forgotten). Shadow can't go back to the past, but he can always remember it and the feelings it brought. He can use the experiences of that day to pave his way forward to a new day. Man I love this game, they did Shadow so much justice in it. I'm happy you got to play it and enjoy it!! I could be off the mark with all of this, it's just my interpretation of why they were in front of Sunset Heights specifically. I can't wait to read everyone's observations and theories!
