+Steven Cantu ... Hi Steve, Glad you like the channel.. but even though I get up nearly every morning and put on my fishing clothes, then check the inshore and off shore forecast... This whole week, it's looks ugly off shore and high tides inshore.. BLAST...! I may break my own rules and go out on a Saturday if the winds and waves will calm down.... So looks like you will need to go back and watch some of the older vids.. I especially like the ones I shot with the underwater cams.. like the, "Better Than an Aquarium" series.I think I have 11 of those videos up now. and I REALLY want to get out to some natural bottom on a flat day and drop the cams down... One of these days, it will happen.

Hi nathan, and there never will be any cursing.. and my channel will always be Safe for the Whole Family... but 3 major things happened this last month to either keep me off the water or unable to make a video... the ugly weather is one, my GPS trolling motor turning head is seized and I need to replace it and 3, my main video rendering computer just decided to stop working. Granted, i have made hundreds of videos with it and ran that computer pretty hard.. but I have a new mother board coming in and hopefully can get back to fishing and video making soon...

Another great adventure! Man those are such huge fish down there, the double circle hook was a smart move. I agree, regular metal wire hooks are the way to go. Stainless will be there forever, where a metal hook won't be there long. Even in freshwater, metal hooks don't last long. Watched the whole video, enjoyed every minute of it and you're right, a chapter or two a night is good reading from the Good Book.

Got far more than I can ever fit on the boat. But to give you a little perspective.. I have taken quite a few ppl out in my boat and fully 90% get sea sick INCLUDING my 2 grown adult boys. And they are coming again this week on vacation and will try again. It breaks my heart when I take them out 20 miles and we just begin to catch fish and within half an hour they are in the fetal position on the deck. Makes for a short trip.

I tried the Double Circle Hook Technique yesterday after a fish straighten my hook when I tried to stop it. I did not get another good bite to get him. That made me think about you the "Double Circle Hood Technique". The wind has been ripping here Tampa Bay so I went to the Sunshine Sky Way Pier, that may have been a Grouper I was using a five inch Pin Fish. I did get a boat and will be posting some Videos when I get better at Editing and Fishing. Keep them coming, I every day I check to see if you have a new one.
@SaltyKayak7 жыл бұрын
Hi KJ, I primarily use the 'double circle hook' technique because I ordered a box of 100 circle hooks and they were not as strong as I anticipated.. several got straightened just like yours. So by doubling the hooks, I effectively not only doubled the strength but increased the hookup times because there were 2 hooks.

SaltyKayak Awesome video! How has the Shakespeare Big Water Rod been holding up? I brought one for offshore.
@SaltyKayak7 жыл бұрын
Hi Derrick, I have had to replace one of my BWS1102 rods because of a freight train AJ grabbed the bait and went under the boat and out the other side while my pole was in the rod holder. This caused the tip to bend in a very tight U and snap.. just one of those things that couldn't be helped and had happened a couple times over the years. But, the rod if good if you don't allow the tip end to bend in a U... should last many years with normal use.

+Anna Matlock .. I am saying this with a smile on my face because John calls me a 'jerk..er' Yeah. it's hard to break a habit of being a 'jerk'er... LOL But there's also one thing that is very difficult for me to show in the videos.. when I put the pole in the holder, I don't turn the cam on until after the fish is hooked.. since I am not holding and 'feeling' the bite. So, I estimate that probably a little more than half of my 'catches' are with circles catching themselves while in the rod holder. But, give this old goat time, and he might surprise you and stop being a ..jerk-er. ;-)

8 жыл бұрын
+AmericanFishDude You can't. You have to get the fish up out of the wreck and keep him off the bottom at all costs. If it gets down into the wreck you can forget about. You can't allow the fish to take any drag when you hook up. That said, he needs a pole with some backbone and a little muscle wouldn't hurt either.

I'm sure he wasn't fishing and 4x hooks or fluorocarbon by any means but it is still very do-able with the given elements.

Another great day, Lane. I wish the sea would lay down a bit here in Ft Pierce-- and it will. I couldn't quite see how you tied the double circle hook rig, but I'm going to experiment and give it a try. I know a lot of viewers must think somethings wrong with all those fish getting off, but it's a fact of life when fish offshore with structure or even a rocky bottom. I've caught a few big fish that swallow the baitfish and after I get them on board they spit the bait up and they weren't even hooked. That doesn't happen often. I am also surprised Shakespeare doesn't send you some Ugly Stiks. You really sell the product and I like them too. It's sad to see some of the comments of Bible interpretation, but there are always those that fight the truth. At least you are reaching out to them. With faith comes understanding.

+Dannie Hill... Hi Danny, My goal isn't wonderful and fantastic people like you but people like Luke 5 vs 32 is referring to. I often step into the blender of the unbeliever and at first, I would 'defend' the Bible. But, what is Christ's example? No defense.. but to either show them they were indeed hypocrites with logs in their eyes or simple sinners looking for truth.. always for the good of the receiver of His gaze. If I can find a good background, I may do a video for my viewers on how to Snell a hook and tie a Uniknot with a double circle hook.. for YEARS I ties all my knots wrong.. then started fishing in the ocean and got spanked many times by our big fish.. Hope I catch another large enough filefish.. now that you said they taste like Mahi.... Down where you are, I call that 'around the curve' .. you are below the Cape and the N winds get a little blunted for you but we are the breakwater for anything N or E.. brutal here today. But I am looking at Friday as a possibility... I have somewhere around 425 videos up and at least half ..maybe 3/4th are over our artificial reefs. You are 110% correct in that the regular styles of fishing have to be adjusted for our sharp and high structure. I really only have challenges with the 'over 25" crowd'. Most of the 22" to 25" I can successfully wrestle up. But those meaty muscle bound Schwarzenegger type Red Snapper... yikes..! My 'theory' about Shakespeare Ugly Stiks and Minn Kota trolling motors or Humminbird GPS/SideScan sonar is that I don't fit the 'image' they want to project.. clean, professional, big spotless THIS century boat and new quiet fuel injected motor, neutral opinions, nice shiny shirt, perfect rods and reels, .. you know what I mean, plastic personalities. Give me blood and guts fishing any day....!

Hi Man, I can see that you have had quite a number of of comments to this video. Without having read them all... I just thought I'd offer my 2 cents in the interest of helping a fellow fisherman out. Please consider using a thicker gage hook, possibly a ' live bait' heavy gage circle hook that wont pull straight. Also consider heavier main and leader line wich will give you a bit of insurance against the reef structure. And lastly consider using a patternoster or dropper rig..with a weight at the bottom and a dropper loop positioned about 3-4 feet above the weight.. which will help with avoiding snags and help draw the fish away fom the structure. Happy fishin and God bless you👍
@SaltyKayak6 жыл бұрын
Thanks FD, I had purchased a box of 100 of these circle hooks from Hong Kong.. (yeah I learned my lesson).. and discovered they were much weaker than the more expensive quality brands. But, rather than just throw them away, I doubled up on them and discovered something interesting. This rig actually caught more fish than a single hook because several times I would put a fish in the boat with just one hook embedded in the mouth which means that had I only had one hook.. half of the time, I would have lost a fish. Anyway, I am back to using quality hooks and only one at a time and I am occasionally using a dropper rig. At least that is what I call it. I only use 2 hooks above the sinker but John uses 3.

You need some more sturdy equipment including hooks . Every drop is a chance for a trophy . You drag yourself out of bed buy gas , supplies and the rest , drive , launch ,go all the way out and the last thing you should be doing is bending hooks and constantly breaking off . That spinning gear isn't the best for what you are doing either .

Not everybody has the money to buy expensive equipment. And the hooks he is using are the ones that are legal in Florida. Check out the regulations on fishing gear requirements for sport fishing in Florida. For reef fish the law says you can not use stainless steel and it has to be a circle hook with no offset. myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/reef-fish-gear-rules/. I use the Mustad Demon 3X circle hooks. They are stronger but each person has their preference. I don't buy fancy name hooks that are several times the price of a Mustad. I see people out there with fishing gear worth twice their boat. I am glad they are blessed to be able to afford that expensive gear but some people are out there because they enjoy fishing and can not afford the investment in expensive gear. I myself am not fishing for sport. I fish to bring food home to eat. I can't afford expensive gear. I can hardly afford the gas for the boat. So I fish with inexpensive gear and so I loose some fish, so what. As long as I can fill the freezer with food I will keep my cheap gear and let the rich folks spend thousands on fishing gear. Everyone has to live within their means. I am glad for you if you can afford to spend a lot of money on fishing gear. The Lord has blessed you and that is very good.

Why do you let the red snapper go? Is it out of season etc? Thanks
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike, Yes, they are not only out of season, the Government (NOAA) has determined by mathematical formula, they are being killed at a greater rate (using another mathematical formula) than they are reproducing so for the last 2 years, we have not had a season. So rather than GO OUT and check the status of the Red Snapper population (do their job) they simply hold dinner meetings in the Hyatt and talk about more regulations they can impose upon fishermen while pretending to care about the health of the fish populations

when fishing for snapper its best to leave the bail open and your finger on the line. Once a snapper rips the line out of your grip count to 5 and clip the bail and set the hook
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
+ravebitchesrave .. hi rave, under 'normal' circumstances and over natural bottom.. you are 100% correct. However, these piles of cement culverts and poles have created a unique kind of fishing experience and it has taken me years to FINALLY figure out how to get these big snapper to the surface. If you watch some of my "Better Than an Aquarium" videos, (I think I have 11 up now) you will see how close these Snapper hang to the structure. And when they inhale your bait, they DIVE/dash the few feet into the structure and POP.. game over. You HAVE TO lock the drag down, have a stout pole and beefy reel AND minimum 80 lb to 100 lb braid with 80lb to 100 lb leader. IT SOUNDS WRONG.. but that is exactly what you need at these piles of culverts.. here is a video I did where John got spanked by a reef boss and I show.. the reason why you not only can't have any drag but you must keep the fish from turning all the way around.. My goal (finally figured it out) is to try and battle the fish while he is still sideways. If he manages to get face down, all that muscle + that big paddle of a tail = spanked again... watch this video and near the end, I show why John was broke off... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5PbmaGEbsiKgrM

Why do you set the hook if you use circle hooks?
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
+Alec Rosenthal .. Hi Alec, By law, we have to use circle hooks when fishing the reefs. And circle hooks are designed to hook the fish in the side of the mouth. But where I fish, over the years I have learned that you simply cannot fish the normal way you are 'supposed' to with circle hooks. When you have a 25" Snapper hanging 5' from a culvert and he inhales your bait, turns and heads to the culvert, if he gets completely 'turned', you have already lost the battle. He can simply power his way into the hole and cut you off. You HAVE TO 'anticipate' when he is half way turned and set the hook (hopefully) and keep him sideways as he is attempting to run to his hole.. If you can get him 10' off the bottom, you have the advantage. It's all about timing when fishing our artificial reefs. But when fishing over open bottom, you can let them turn and run and set the hook themselves.

AWESOME VIDEO!!! You really get me excited about fishing I can't wait till I get my own boat. I see you use spinners on most of your rods on the boat Do you use any conventional reels or level wind reels? I have a Penn 309 on a 6'6 Ugly Stik the model is (BWB 1130 66) It has good sensitivity and power to muscle those fish out of that structure too.
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
+J.R ...Hi J.R., I have a couple conventional reels and as soon as my 150lb braid comes in (end of this month) I will be stringing it on with 200lb leader and I am going out and kick some Goliath grouper butt. I have one or two Goliaths spank me good today and nearly every big snapper I caught, a Goliath came and ate and took me down in the structure. I am guessing it was around 200-300 lbs because I could not turn him.... even with 100 lb braid.

So these circle hooks, the fish really hooks themselves?
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
That's what I keep telling the fish but they just don't listen like the 'environmentalists' say. I used to hate those 'no catchum' hooks. Let me put my sarcasm aside and say that they were designed to help keep from 'belly' hooking the fish and causing mortality.. and they certainly do that. If everything works as intended, the fish inhales the bait, turns away and the hook is supposed to glide into the corner of the mouth, rotate and hook the fish. It is a beautiful thing when it works. Over years of having to use circle hooks (because NOAA and SAFMC rules say when bottom fishing we have to use circle hooks) I have increased my catch ratio from about 25% to upwards of maybe 60%. Years ago, studies were done using professional fishermen and even when everything was done exactly as the environmentalists said to do, the hookup ratio (compared to J-hooks) never exceeded around 78% (As my memory serves me.. I read the report many years ago) But, it is my opinion that I actually PREFER to use circle hooks now because I catch a LOT of fish and it is 1.) more sporting and 2.) causes far less mortality than J-hooks. Also, I have increased my catch ratio by increasing the size of my circle hooks. If you successfully caught a 10 lb Red Snapper using a 3/0 J-hook, you drastically reduce your catch ratio by using a 3/0 circle hook. But by upsizing to a 5/0 or even an 8/0 circle hook, you might be able to attain a 75% hookup ratio for the same size fish.

Hi Salty, Have you tried 2XX Gami circle hooks? They are pretty strong and hold up good to 40-50 pound stripers up North
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
+GEORGE K .. Hi George, I have a couple packs.. actually a bunch of packs of Gami 5/0 both circle and Octopus. The ones that I started doubling were both Gami 5/0 circles including the one that broke.. I am finding that there is a definite size threshold even for these Gami 5/0 hooks.. somewhere around 25" to 27".. Any Red Snapper above 27" OVER or CLOSE to structure, where I have to lock the drag down tight, will bend or break the hook. I am certain that if I caught a 30" RS over a flat bottom, I could play him and let him run.. peel off drag.. and let him wear himself out and not bend or break a hook.

You are going to LOVE one of my upcoming videos.. but it will have to be a 'just right' kind of non-windy day. Since you appear to be a Christian, I am going to let you.. my sister.. in on it before it happens. It will be a similar analogy as in this video... but with an incredible twist. About 3 years ago after a strong storm, I went down to the beach to see what shells the storm had washed up.. I like to collect the nicer ones for the back deck and for the grand kids to play with.. crafts and things, when they come down. I also pick up some of the trash that floats in and deposit in the trash cans on my way out. Well, a heavily barnacle encrusted wine bottle had been deposited on the beach and I picked it up and kept it thinking it would look cool on the back deck. And there it sat for the last 3 years until about a month ago when I accidentally bumped it and it fell and rolled on the ground knocking just about all of the dried barnacles off. Well, it now just looked like an old wine bottle and I picked it up and was just about to toss it in the trash can when I noticed something in the neck of the bottle... and you will just have to wait and find out what I saw when I do the video.. yes it is precisely like what is concealed in our Bible and you will understand when you see it. And no, I haven't removed the cork.. it is still a mystery.

wow a lot of experts here in the comments, question on the stainless steel hook issue, is tinned ok for the fish
@SaltyKayak7 жыл бұрын
Hello ss, tinned and any coating that doesn't inhibit the rusting out of the hook is okay. It is illegal to use stainless steel hooks at our reefs and have caught fish with both SS hooks in them and regular hooks in them and every one of the regular hooks were in some stage of rusting away. I caught one Red Drum that when cleaning, I found the remains of 2 halves of a nearly completely rusted out hook. Also, 2 years ago, I was out at our reef #11 and had on a very specific brand of 10/0 circle hook with a grunt on it and it got hammered, big fight and I lost the battle. 10 days later, I went back to that exact same GPS spot at this section of the reef and dropped down ANOTHER expensive 10/0 circle hook with a grunt on it and it too got slammed. The battle was different this time as I got the Red Snapper up to the surface to measure and release but not before being able to remove and keep my old circle hook from 10 days previous. What I found when examining the hook was that nearly 1/8" of the tip of the hook was already rusted off AND the barb on the hook was no longer sharp and was rounded off and dull and it was easy to remove from the side of the mouth. I have no doubt that the hook would have completely rusted out within a month or 2 whereas stainless would have been there forever.

Hi salty! I was just wondering what rod and reel you are using? Love the vids. Keep up the good work and God bless!
@SaltyKayak7 жыл бұрын
Hi WT, I use a pretty wide variety of reels and poles but I honestly have to admit that my fav pole is my OLD Ugly Stik BWS1101. It is a 7' Medium Action pole and has pulled up everything from small bait on Sabiki rigs to 7' massive sharks and hasn't broken. I also like the Penn Battle II 6000 reel and the 8000 reel. Of course all my rods are ONE PIECE because I learned early on that the 'convenience' of a 2 piece rod to be able to easier carry, is badly offset by the weakest point in the rod.. right at the joint. If you catch a big fish or bend a 2 piece pole in a tight U...it will break at the joint first so always buy a 1 piece. I also use 100 lb braid PowerPro because of the kind of fish I catch and the structure I am fishing over. However, I will vary my leader strength from 50 lb to 100 lb mono and occasionally I will use wire leader...

The fact that he's not using the drag bothers me so much
@SaltyKayak8 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't.. and if you fished over these reefs, to successfully pull these bigger Red Snappers away from these piles of cement culverts, you HAVE to lock the drag down as much as possible. In the next video (uploading now) I try to explain the reasons.. I have had to learn the hard way.. after several years of 'doing it right' and using drag and losing 90% of the fish, now I get 75% or more to the boat. Fishing here, in this kind of structure, you HAVE to break the rules. Matter of fact, I have a display in my 'man cave' of all the hooks I have removed from Snapper (including lengths of mono attached) of fishermen who hadn't discovered how to fish these gnarly conditions.
