That was my Key West 186 BR. Sold it about 4 years ago. Great boat.
@MrGabys912 күн бұрын
@SaltyKayak I suspected it was a Key West Bay Reef 186 or 196. Thanks! I'm thinking of buying one. I currently have a key west 1520 and it is great for flats and inshore fishing. Lately, I have been itching to start reef and offshore fishing. I still want to fish inshore, so that is why I'm looking to buy a bay boat and not an offshore boat. I looked up the draft on your boat and they say 10 to 12 inches, but I never trust what the manufacturer claims. Did you ever do inshore fishing on that boat? If so, how shallow do you think it can really get? I know i will definitely not be able to fish a lot of the very shallow spots i currently fish with my key west 1520, but I'm hoping it can still go relatively shallow. I would be extremely grateful if you could share your experience in shallower waters on your old boat, it would mean a lot.

Question about having to disconnect the batteries at night. At about the 3:30 mark you’re talking about the issue of the motor deploying due to rough water. It appears that the motor is plugged in to a socket which I’m assuming is the power supply to the motor. Wouldn’t unplugging that be the same as disconnecting the batteries or is there other wiring connecting it that causes it to drain the batteries!
@SaltyKayak14 күн бұрын
Hi Warren, "Supposedly" the the plug that inserts into the receptacle is waterproof. But as any consistent saltwater fisherman knows, there ain't no thing as waterproof. If you unplug and plug back in immediately, you are letting saltwater 'mist' into the socket. I have gone so far as used E-6000 to permanently seal the plug area and still the salt air gets to the BACK of the receptacle from inside the boat hull. It is just something that a saltwater fisherman has to put in his maintenance schedule about once a year.. check ALL electrical attachments and fix any corrosion. Concerning the batteries. I used a 'master' switch between the battery + terminal and the electrical system on the boat. All you do is reach into the battery compartment and switch it to 'off'. Also, I had a master switch just for the trolling motor batteries and would switch it to off to kill any juice going to the trolling motor. Then I would put a charger on the trolling motor batteries to get them back up to full charge for the next adventure.

So many things I could say about this vid, but "I don't know what cruising speed is"... dude, you hit 4.5k on the tach. For a 115, that's a good place to sit at. What's you speed there? That's your cruising speed. But seriously LOVE this vid. Building a 186 sportsman right now. Throwing in toys she didn't come with, but to see the performance if a 115 Yammer is good. Hope you kept this one and brought her into the modern world.

So, why did you quit fishing?
@SaltyKayak4 ай бұрын
Hi John, In the 'lengthy' description. I tell of several primary reasons why I quit fishing but in the really short version, I have torn cartilage in my right knee (and possibly hip) and have very painful bone on bone rubbing if I am not paying attention to exactly how I am standing. I can't put any pressure above my own weight (Like catching those monster Red Snappers or blasted sharks) otherwise, if I bend dramatically, my eyeballs begin to spin in my head and tears come out of my eyes. Possibly, if I can get the VA to operate on the knee, I might be able to do some limited fishing from friends boats. Truthfully, I miss the off shore adventures.

The Hooded Merganser and his mate are some of the hardest to get close to and photograph but I have a few real winners. That one on my shirt is one that I sublimated and pressed on a T-shirt. But this time of the year, 95% of the birds I photograph are way up North.

@SaltyKayak4 ай бұрын
Actually started to do my roasting outside but the radical temp changes and humidity made it tough to get consistent roasts so I made one of our spare bedrooms the 'craft room' and put the setup in a better controlled environment. "They say" that roasting your own coffee will cost you 1/3rd of the price of buying it from a grocery store. I think it is closer to 1/2 the price because once you pay for the roaster, scale and grinder, you still have to buy the green beans and roast them. The true benefit is a 'little' savings but a better, fresher and bolder taste AND you have learned a new skill.

Yes, Both John and I are alive and doing fairly good for our age. John is in his mid 80's and I am in my mid-70's so we both have been paying attention and ACTING our age. God has moved me in other directions and I have given much of my fishing gear away so it may bless others. I sold the boat 3 years ago when I knew the price of gas was going to quickly rise. And as a retiree on Social Security, God plainly let me know, my fishing days are pretty much over. Truth is, I never 'made' any money I could call a 'profit'. Everything that came in from KZbin (that is another story.. advice..DON'T put a scripture verse in your videos or the powers at KZbin (Google) will dramatically reduce your advertising ability and thus cash flow.) Everything that came in went out in boat repair, trailer upkeep, video equipment, editing software and GAS. (Truthfully, more went out than came in and many times I had to dip into retirement savings to afford a trip out.) However, since I still have all my video editing software and a few small cams, I might be uploading some woodworking projects (scroll saw) and other unique videos... Do you have a fishing channel? Let me know and I will check it out.

Maybe an update. Please don't give up fishing. We really enjoy your videos. You really have inspired a lot of people to enjoy life, and the hobby of fishing. Processing fishing, and even shrimp is something that I will always remember. I am confident that you can set out a couple of lawn chairs, with an umbrella, and catch hardhead saltwater catfish and we would still enjoy it. I don't have a fishing channel, just a couple of fishing, Scuba diving, and snorkeling videos while spearfishing, and Lobstering while on vacation in the Keys, or Hawaii. I am in North Texas, so the enjoyment of an offshore adventure isn't the same. Take Care, keep us informed, and God Bless you and your family in your next adventures.

Hi TD, you and many others but, 2 weeks ago, I hit the 3/4th of a century mark and the Lord made it plain to me that I MUST search for less physically stressful endeavors. I recently completed a month of physical therapy due to torn meniscus in my knee and also hip issues. If I would have kept up the offshore fishing, the constant rocking and jarring wave action, I might not be walking today. I know this is primarily a fishing channel but I may start another channel for my other 3 present hobbies: bird photography, roasting my own specialty coffees and artistic paper making. Yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks...!

@SaltyKayak9 ай бұрын
When I flushed it with Rydlyme as per the instructions, that stopped the 'stopping while at near full throttle' issue. I didn't have a temp gauge from the motor to tell me when it was overheating but it ran like new after the flush.
@rickcolley10709 ай бұрын
I just need to ask did this take care of your overheating problem, captain. Thank you for taking the time to put on these videos. Very informative.
@SaltyKayak9 ай бұрын
Rydlyme... is the best and quickest solution. Yes, I had to pay a little more for it but from what I could tell after a good long flush.. by following the directions.. the motor ran clean and cool up until I sold the boat not long after I did this flush. This might be upsetting to some, but when I saw that Biden was going to be President, I knew I wouldn't be able to afford the cost of non-E gas (I am retired and on SS). And I was absolutely right.. gas prices skyrocketed AFTER I bailed on the boat.

I even got baptized on the 21st of January 2024! I just wanted to let you know even if you gave up on the old internet I am thankful for your videos always mentioning the Lord! I know I have a lot of time to get to your age but I won't ever let my relationship with the Lord diminish like it has in the past. I pray that all things are well in your life and that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit continue to use you as a vessel to spread his word via internet or not!
