You forgot to mention that Salukis do not stink. Your home will never smell of dog if you have only a Saluki. I cannot emphasize enough, how much they need to run, play and exercise. Do NOT get a Saluki if you do not have the time to spend with it. You don't own a Saluki. . . You marry one. Make darn sure that you do extensive research about this breed before you get one. They are well worth it, providing that you are well worth them. Must have a huge bed and couch. Salukis will destroy everything if left alone for long periods. ( More than eight hours ) They require high quality food. Alot of love and most of your attention and time. Yes, I was privaliged to have one ( be owned by one lol) 35 years ago. Just speaking from experience. I had to be vetted and have an excellent referral by another Saluki owner before I could get one. Maybe acquisition standards have changed since then but you will not find this breed at Petco or in mall outlets. Think before you buy. Thanks.

Awesome breed, love them! I believe they have a higher endurance when it comes to speed than Greyhounds, great video sir!
@Rocadog4 жыл бұрын
I would say that they definitely have higher endurance. The Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world, but they are actually coach potatoes. They are build for the speed, but not for long distance running

As a dog lover in my mid-50s, I live in a spacious apartment in South Korea in front of the park and enjoys riding a bicycle. Currently, I have been growing the Sighthonud “Italian Greyhound” for more than 10 years. Since I was born, I have always lived with dogs for more than 50 years, but when I was a child, except for “German Shepherd” and “Collie,” in a mansion with a large yard, I have only raised short breeds of small dogs. I have a wish to raise a large dog shortly before my retirement, so I am going to adopt "Saluki" from Japan. I used to think of “Border Collie” and “Golden Retriever” as big dog candidates before, but I think it is more difficult than “Saluki” in my situation and environment. If you walk for an hour every day, “Saluki” asks if it is okay to welcome you as a dog due to the nature of the breed. It may vary depending on the case, but is it a dog breed that is difficult to raise with a bunch of accidents [training, personality, affection for the owner, maintaining a smooth relationship with other breeds, hair management, etc.] Or would it be better to abandon my greed and adopt the “Coton de Tulear”, a small dog with a completely different personality? We would be very grateful if you could respond.

Hello Jason. First of all, you are great for thinking about adopting the dog instead of buying. About your question, i am not sure if the Saluki is a best choice for you. These dogs are adaptable and there are many of them living in city and in apartments, but still, they do best in a house with big yard. They also have quite high energy level and they need more than 1 hour of walks a day, especially if they are younger. They definitely need several, at least 3 walks a day accompanied with some playtime. I think Golden Retriever you mentioned might be a better choice in your case. Or if you want a sighthound, than i would suggest an English Greyhound or Whippet. They are much more suitable for living in apartments and they have lower exercise needs.

I have a small version of Saluki. I worked at the humane society for 4 years and fostered for 21 and never once saw one in rescue. Never knew they existed until I adopted my Sadie. She is the most intellgent and awesome dog I've ever had.

We owned a whippet for 10 years from a puppy. Unfortunately he died way too early (liver cancer) but he died at home with his humans. My husband loves the Saluki breed. They sound very much like a whippet. Only difference is the length of walk. My hubby walks a mile a day in the countryside would this be enough once a day or twice? Many thanks on the info. 🇬🇧😊
@Rocadog3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for your loss.. The 1 mile walk a day would be enough, if you will provide the dog with some additional exercise (playtime, fun training session, free off leash runs on your yard).
