I was a Machinist Mate on the Robi in the mid 80's. I always thought it odd they put me in the Mount 52 projectile mag as my GQ station. Never complained though. The AC down there was heavenly compared to #2 engine room.

Loader Mt 51 USS Blandy during an apparent loss during an GFS I wondered topside to the bosun's hatch and they started shooting while I was out in the open I wasn't visible by the bridge as I was forward of the mount let me tell you the muzzle Blast from that is no joke

Rock on, brother. I usually was OMC operator, but occasionally I did gun captain. It was a great time to be alive. I really miss getting to use my 0876 (MK42 mods 9&10) NEC on a daily basis.

Are they firing with live ammunition?

Definitely not. There is no recoil of the barrel whatsoever. I was a MK42 Gunner's Mate for four years, and the barrel recoils rearward 12"-18" when firing real ammo. I still wouldn't feel good driving my ship past that barrel, firing saluting rounds or not, having to rely on the Gunner's Mates firing them to be sure no projectiles were in the ammo drums below decks. FWIW, in my entire time, we never fired saluting rounds out of our guns, and I didn't know they were even available for 5"/54 caliber guns, as they clearly are from watching this video.

@@Gunners_Mate_Guns I WAS THE GUN CAPTAIN ON MOUNT 52 ON HS THEMISTOCLES HELLENIC NAVY (EX USS BERKELEY DDG 15 ). SHOOTING SALLUTING ROUNDS WITH THESE GUNS WAS AGAINST SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BECAUSE YOU HAD TO INTERFERE THE SEQUENSE OF OPERATION WICH WAS TO DANGEROUS FOR ACCIDENTS . IT WAS WRITEN INSIDE THE BIBLIOGRAPHY. THE ONLY REASON TO DO THAT WAS FOR GLEARING CHARGE DUE TO MISFIRE, IN ORDER TO SHOOT THE PROJECTILE FROM THE GUN BARREL.WE NEVER FIRED SALUTING AMMO IN THE HELLENIC NAVY PROBABLY IN THIS VIDEO THEY USE NORMAL BATTLE CASES...
