Occasionally while I'm traveling in my home state of Texas, I find myself passing through the small town of El Campo, which is in the coastal plains in the central region of the coast. El Campo is the hometown of Master Sergeant Benavidez and as I roll down the highway just on the outskirts lies the National Guard Armory that is named in his honor. I can't drive past that building without pulling over into the parking lot and taking a moment to pay homage to this great American, who sadly left us in November of 1998. I don't stay there long, but I pause in my journey to have a few good thoughts about him and when the tears start welling up in my eyes, I know it's time to go. They don't make 'em like him anymore…or do they? Ol' "Doc" (formerly of 2/8, 5/10, MARG 1-85, !st FSSGand 13th MEU [SOC] Command Staff) says, "Semper Fi!".

There's something so compelling about seeing a figure like this of your own race and similar background. My parents were farmers from Mexico and I was the first in my family to go to college and join the military. I didn't grow up with many famous role models, hell the most famous I can think of was Cheech and Chong. Funny guys for sure, but hardly role models for a young man. A lot of things drew me to the military but more than anything was how many Latinos who made fantastic careers for themselves in the military.

I'm Roman Catholic. I am taught it is a sin NOT to be patriotic. The IV Commandment is 'Honor thy Mother and Father.' The Latin word for one's country is 'Patria' which means 'Land of my Fathers.' The IV Commandment of Chivalry is 'To love the country thou was born in.' To love the land of your fathers is to honor your father. Patriotism isn't just a virtue, it is a duty.

If you watch the history on him you'll see he is where "at least I think" Hollywood got several of their ideas for some of their movie characters. He was the real life Rambo!!! Any absolute amazing soldier and an even more extraordinary man. Honestly it hurt my heart to see just how young he passed away and even more heartbreaking to have seen just how he passed.

This great man was a huge influence on 2 little boys growing up in a gang infested area of East LA during the 80s. He introduced the word "duty" to us while reading about him and set us on our destiny to fight for the greater good. My brother came to the U.S. at 8yrs old, joined the Army right out of high school, did 15yrs while serving with the 82nd, 3/75th, and 1st Cav during all that time and earning 2 bronze stars and purple heart until he was KIA in Iraq. His dying wish was to be buried on the same grounds as our childhood hero, Master Sergeant Benavidez.....glad he got to end it with a smile and peace....❤🇺🇸

A great reference that all should watch. This warrior is humble and you can tell he is kind, and a no BS doer who gets the right things done with no whining. He asks, "is it a sin to be patriotic?" (5:20) That the question is even asked should give us all pause. Makes clear how we have drifted.

Hell yes, I'm proud to be an American, I am an immigrant, I came to this country legally and did a career in the US ARMY and the US AIR FORCE. I would do it all over again.

I was listening to this guy a few months ago and I was like damn. We should all aspire to do better with the opportunity we have in America to bitch and complain about b.s. when we have so much.

Thanks for sharing this. It's a sad state that our country is in, though I love it and I'm never giving up on what I know it can be. My age group is the whiny babies that couldn't hammer a nail without vlogging about it first. Hopefully they'll come to realize that this country truly has the greatest potential for good, and our history is not something to be forgotten/purged but something to learn from and cherish.
