I’m a Navajo. So just hearing this makes me proud. We were a big part of WW2 despite the hardships we went through before we became US. I read a book about this and it said that no code talkers complained about boot camp because we were use to everything that the boot camp brought to us. From the heat, living in poor conditions and the stress. We kicked ass and I wish others would notice that.

my grandpa was Oglala Lakota Sioux who served in the Pacific in world war 2 he went to New Caledonia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan and I never heard him complain about his time in the army he said he loved being in the army so when he was honorably discharged in 1946 he severed 13 years in the national guard and and every holiday he began a tradition of putting the American flag up on every holiday he has a bronze star medal he passed away in 2009 he was great man he taught me so much he was alive

My two Drill sergeants at 2017, knew a few navajo battle buddies in Afghanistan. They told me they were highspeed and very humble people. That's why they were hard on me for a reason as a respect to them. I got smoked many times but I learned alot in those first months. It all paid off.

Damn that's a powerful statement. I'm navajo from Arizona. My mom always tells us stories about how her and the rest of the children on the rez were rounded up and taken to boarding schools. They weren't allowed to speak their language and had to practice Christianity. They only got to see their parents twice a year...if that.

Peter Macdonald is a navajo code talker but not from WW2 because he was 17 during 1945, so he would possibly be a Korean war Navajo Code Talker. (It's illegal to enlist under 18 yrs in the marine corps, since 1917)

I am sure he had his own moral issues with the american culture but when he was named soldier he and others like him did his job. They didn't want to b ruled by Germany or Japan so they chose to fight them despite the way they were treated by the Anglo Americans. Many Navajos n other Native tribes had fought in WWI as well. It was nothing new. Some Navajos served in military fighting Apaches n Poncho Villa. When WWI started many of them showed up at recruitment wearing their old US Army uniforms n old rifles.

Yes their were many native American tribes that participated in the code talker program, I think Hopi was sent to Europe with the Cheyenne and the Navajo and Apache were sent to the Pacific. But the reason why Navajo is most represented in WW2 because they had no vocabulary or dialect to study so the axis powers wouldn't be able to crack Navajo. Hope this answers your question 😊

Windtalkers would probably have to be my favorite military movie. The "Code" is still to this day one of the coolest tactics that the US military has ever utilized. When he started speaking Navaho it gave me chills. This man was a witness to a complex and deadly situation in which he certainly had a right to avoid. The Marine Corps teaches pride and places a strong emphasis on it's history. The famed coded talkers have been woven into our proud traditions and we are proud of them. I like to think they were proud to be us as well. I am sure his boot camp experience was way harder than mine and I was only expected to speak English and do as I was told with a quickness. Flags of our fathers is a good movie about Jima. Not to put any other part of war down, or be disrespectful to other types of combat, but in my opinion, it would be particularly scary being a young sailor aboard a ship where you were sat down under, in your rack, and can hear the shelling, then the ship goes down and you're trapped, the feeling of helplessness would get me. Respect to all veterans, I just think a sailor on a ship in WW2 would be terrifying

What never had ceased to amaze me is how humble/modest these men and women are/were of the greatest generation. My grandfather was in the Army Aircorp and helped retake the Philippine Islands. My Grandfather in law was a pilot in Europe. His crew was one of the first to complete 25 missions. Neither men would talk about the war, but would tell funny stories about their buddies. Tom Brokaw's book about the Greatest Generation described both men to a T.

My uncle is serving in the army My Pap is passed but was in marine Corp. my Pop Pop was in the navy I plan to go to the marines I am only ten so I have 8 years to prepare

These guys are true heroes and national treasures. We should try to listen to, learn from, and record the experiences of as many of these veterans as possible before they’re all gone. There are valuable lessons to be learned from their experiences and stories.

I didn't know about the Navajo code talkers until I look them up on Google after watching the movie windtalkers. I huge respect to the Navajo code talkers for what they did in ww2.

Not only did some self enlist. But many who were enlisted, showed up with their own rifles.. Natives were ready to protect their land

My great grandpa harold evans was issued his name from the US and he became a navajo code talker(they couldn't pronounce his name is what I'm told). He always took me fishing and when I was 7, I asked about the war... He refused to tell me. I love my grandpa cause we caught a lot of trout in Tsaile Lake untile he died when I turned 13. I will say he made really good scrambled eggs but his gun lessons were strict and I remember being very intimidated but hunting season came and every elk kill he did... he always thanked the elk and said a prayer for it for feeding us. Different breed of man is made from war and I respect it cause I've never lived military life but I'm so proud to be a native american.

Good to go! I met some fellow Navajo Marines at Camp Pendleton MCT in 1994. I'm half Ojibwe (Chippewa) and half Wisconsin Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) but a Red Lake Chippewa enrollee. There were some Ho-Chunk code talkers in WW2 also. An enlistment in the US military is what most of us just do as young men/women. Also an older relative of mine is Medal of Honor recipient Mitchell Red Cloud US Army KIA in Korea but in WW2 he was in the USMC. Semper Fi :)

My cheii was a Navajo Code Talker in the Pacific. WWII-USMC 1942-1945.

Fun fact, the 2nd Marine speaking was actually elected & served as our Chairman/President of the Navajo Nation for 4 terms 👍🏽
