As an American (Texan, to be specific) and history buff, I absolutely LOVE Dad's Army -- thank you for posting this. I had never heard of "Rear Guard" -- the American attempt to rip off "Dad's Army" -- but it seems in typical Hollywood fashion they take someone else's brilliant idea, execute it very poorly, then blame the audience when it doesn't work.

Fantastic document this vid !! I was a child back then in The Netherlands where Dad's army was broadcasted as well. I learned to feel british humour as if it was my own. I imitated all personalities just for fun and learned English very well by doing so. It all became my own imagination. After all those years , seeing Dad's Army again , I came home in a way that it actualized my memories .....🌷❤ Timeless.

Daar komen de schutters! Rather odd title if you're looking back on it as an adult. It doesn't make as much sense as the original. Shows like these, in a way, wére Dutch humor. Many British shows were broadcast here in that time. Allo Allo, Blackadder, Are You Being Served, You Rang M'lord, It Aint Half Hot, Mum. Even some quintessential 'Dutch' shows were flown in from the UK. "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" and "SamSam" had entire seasons using the same scripts as their UK counterparts. (On the Buses and Man about the House)

The thing that's made the show work for me was the captain mannering was a good man. In tight situations he was Brave and he never gave up hope. And he was loyal. And it was also a fussbudget who sometime claim credit for things he didn't do. And he was very class and Status sensitive. It was just a perfect combination. Over the course of watching the series that came to trust that he and the troupe would suffer but persevere and somehow come out as best as anyone could expect in a situation.

Thank you for this recap. This series not only touched the British people there are countries all over the world where their citizens took part in the World Wars 1 and 2. I saw and loved this series quite a few years ago but despite my families attempts to get the records of my grandfather's service in WW1 and my father's service in WW2 we were told that we could not get them until the generation of that time had passed away. Until then all official documents were considered secret. Our family only managed to get these documents two years ago 79 years after my grandfather passed away in 1941 and my father had passed away in 2005. This time watching the character of lance corporal Jack Jones who is my favourite character explaining his part in the Boer War and 1st world war in the Egyptian campaigns it was as though I was listening to my grandfather who I have never had the pleasure to know. Being South African my grandfather was in the Royal Mounted Infantry in the 2nd Boer War at the tender age of 17. He joined the army at the beginning of WW1 where he was in several campaigns. Firstly he was in German West Africa where he helped to disarm and stop the German communication center. Then he went to Egypt under a British Commander. Then he went to Britain to get trained in trench warfare. After this he was sent to the Somme where he managed to survive the terrible 6 day Battle of Delville Woods. After this suffering from P.T.S.D. and damage to his lungs from Mustard gas his commander sent him back home to be trained as a driver to take up a position which was supposed to be non combative in German East Africa as a driver. From descriptions of the engagements he was involved in there was no such thing as a non combative role. To top it all while there he contracted reoccurring malaria. When he came back home he was a shadow of the man he was before the war and because of the flashbacks he had because of the P.T.S.D. his marriage failed and he lost his wife and children. My grandmother was in the W.A.A.F. and she had seen many cases such as his and knew how to deal with it. She married him, became his second wife and looked after him because he was unable to work until the beginning of WW2. Although he was actually struggling physically because of the damage done to his body and mind in WW1 he determinedly went to sign up for the equivalent of the British Home Guard in Cape Town South Africa. He may have had sergeant stripes but unfortunately he did not last long. In June 1941 his body gave up the fight and he passed away. His grave and other sevicemens graves are in the cemetery but are marked and cared for by the British Monuments Council. My mother was only 10 years old at the time. Although the character of Jack Jones may seem funny and ridiculous the story he was telling was true. And after researching what the allied forces went through in that war it took me months to recover emotionally from learning about the cruelty and gravity of what happened to not only the soldiers but also the citizens who were indigenous people in the war zones and sadly the approximately 8 million animals who also perished serving in the war effort. My father was in the WW2 as an air craftsman fixing and assembling allied planes. When he told us about his work there a special aura took over the room as his face glowed. Even so long after the war knowing more about it Dads Army means even more to me than it did before especially because I have seen documentaries on all the fairly sophisticated plans and measures which the British War Office put in place to protect the British Archipelago. I am glad I did otherwise the significance of the balloons set up to deter low flying bombers would have been lost to me. They like my parents may no longer be alive but the actors from Dad's Army were and are still wonderful to watch. The strangest thing is that even though WW2 ended 17 years before I was born because of the stories I listened to on my father's knee this series has an air of nostalgia not lost to me.

An American attempt reminds me of what John Cleese said about an American Fawlty Towers. He wasn't consulted at áll, and asked if they were going to make many changes. "Just one, we're going to take Basil Fawly out". The "Don't tell him Pike" scene shifts the comedy more towards 'Pike' being scared of the German coming towards him, rather than his name being revealed. I don't know if that's down to British vs US humor, but at the very least it's an effect of not having written the joke, and not qúite understanding it either.

In various documentaries I've heard his colleagues -- actors, production crew, executives -- call David Croft a "genius". Never Jimmy Perry. Obviously the balance of contributions to their great successes weighs heavily in favour of Croft, though Perry was much more keen on the limelight.
