was Jack Smethurst in character when he made those two gringe worthy racist slurs at the two black people?

I remember watching this as a child, it used to be on Monday evenings at around 7pm - as prime time as it gets - although it's only now I can appreciate the plots. I also love the informality of this show as the clues are being worked out (feels live and spontaneous) and it's a clever way to combine those two staples of 1970s British television - the crime drama and game show.

You can faintly here the gallery director at 50 seconds in giving instructions to the cameramen and vision mixer. But something stands out that I don't think the panel picked up on: the man lying on the floor (Mr Fraser) said he was sitting and felt faint then fell on the floor but if that were the case he wouldn't have ended up in the position they found him in.

Great programme. Really takes me back to watching the TV as a child in the 70s. Nothing offensive or racist at all.

I remember this episode! On reflection this series must have been a hoot to make, because it's basically old hams (on the panel) quizzing their fellow old hams (on the set).

I loved this programme as a kid in the 70s-I never saw the Edward Woodward version- and I love it now. A really clever, enjoyable, and entertaining show every time. I'm just finishing binge watching it now.

Binge watching every episode. What a great series from the worst decade for TV in the UK ever.

Rodney Bewes' smarmy comments directed at Sue Lloyd clearly went down badly. His subsequent downward helter-skelter ride of a career isn't much of a surprise.

It's a pity that this series seriously ran out of steam towards the end, particularly because it consistently attracted a range of very talented actors to appear in the crime dramas and interesting celebrities as panel members; Jon Pertwee was an endearing host. It wasn't a good idea to include so many 'jokey', 'Christmas Special-type' episodes (particularly given that the programmes were almost all broadcast during the summer) and - as a talented writer - Lance Percival should have known better than to write himself into the show as a sub-par imitation Inspector Clouseau.

Of course, Paul Darrow subsequently became a sci-fi icon as Avon in 'Blake's Seven', but he could always be relied upon to dish up a generous serving of ham when given half a chance (check out his performance as Richard III in the Dr Who series 'Timelash', for example).

'Whodunnit?' consistently attracted amazing talent both as guests as in acting parts. I wish that more early episodes had been made with Edward Woodward as host, but Jon Pertwee was undoubtedly the definitive presenter: suave, warm and well-briefed. TV today could do with re-introducing this sort of civilised parlour game.

There was a detail the panel failed to notice. Clive Swift's character wrongly said that the CIA man hailed from Chicago. If he were actually a secret agent, he would've known that the CIA's headquarters are in Langley, Virginia.
