my salvage story: bought a 2007 Altima 2.5S for $800 off a guy. Got T-boned by a tahoe at a 4 way. No frame damage, got it aligned and on the road. Put 2 junker doors on it and drove it for about 18 months without an issue, got T-boned again six inches away from the original impact point by a dodge journey at a 5 way. Drove it home, its sitting in my grandma's driveway while im at trade school. Love it more than my 99 ram 5 speed, nothing slows it down. Dont tell my insurance or the DMV, they think its been repaired by a dealership both times.

early 90s salvage cars were it! a guy buys an 87 5.7 iroc z back haved it from an 82 2.5 Camaro, looked good but I never drove it. countless Camaro, firebirds and fox Mustangs were pieced back together back then. so I bought an 88 BMW cabriolet, girl rearended a pickup. I stripped sheetmetal off. I took it to a body shop and they pulled it on a blackhawk bench system. after I got it home and seen how bad the crumple points looked, I junked it. no more front hit salvage cars.

As someone who has dabbled in the salvage repair game.... water cars can be great flips IF DONE CORRECTLY. But the time, money, and migraine medicine involved to do it correctly will land you in an AA meeting before the end of the first week. And when he was talking about the sand coming out? 10000% true. Did a Jeep Grand Cherokee that got trapped on the beach, flooded when the tide came in. To this day, there is still sand coming out of the frame rails.

I once bought an otherwise perfect 74 impala for $400 that was driven to church on Sundays. The only problem was that the lady parked it under a car port where the rain poured right on the rear quarter making a 2 foot diameter rust hole from the vinyl top to the top of the fender. I used chicken wire, duct tape and bondo to perfectly fill the void inside and out. I matched the paint and glued the vinyl top back down and the car looked perfect. Low mileage 350CI V8 I put a nice stereo in it, wheels off of a 95 suburban and converted it to R34 and it was a sweet ride. I drove it for three years and ended up selling it for what I paid.

Great video. On the subject of why was it totaled: had a lady come into our Honda dealer with a new CRV. 1500 miles. She left the sunroof open during a rail storm. All kinds of warning lights on and electrical freakout. GEICO adjuster came to look at it. Totaled it on the spot based on his passed experience with dash electronics getting wet. We were a little shocked but there you go. Had a similar situation with the same model about a year later. 25,000 miles on the car, Customer didn’t want to go through insurance. We stripped the interior to dry it out. Replaced 2 control modules and the interior wiring harness and the car was fine. Now, at our shop rate the bill was $1000, but still. Far from totaled.

I have USAA car insurance. They have or had a excellent rep. for customer service. Then a few years ago someone with their insurance had a F-350 dually that was flooded. They paid it off as a flood car and then sold it at auction. Instead of a salvage title they sold it as a good vehicle. Got caught and the CEO had to come up with a bunch of BS as to how it happened, You can add ins. companies to the shady used car guys reputation.

When I was doing body work professionally, the place I worked at made our courtesy cars from insurance auction buys. The one I remember the most was a Honda accord that we used the rear clip off of... It was in a front end crash on the way home from the grocery store, a package of chicken legs slipped under the rear seat, the car sat in the yard until summer! The smell when the car was rolled into my parts painting booth was awesome! It was the only time I put 3 coats of clear on the inside of a car!

As long as they use a PDR guy, a guy I work with bought a repaired hail damaged Holden Commodore (same as that gto but a sedan) looked pretty good when he got it, two years later ever panel was covered in egg shaped cracks, someone had just used filler and re sprayed it. Worked out well for me, bought it cheap as chips, put the manual transmission into a base model automatic sedan I got cheap with a blown trans, put the new shocks and springs he put in it, put the ss interior in mine too, parted out the rest and made enough to rebush the whole front and rear suspension and fit a new radiator. Kept the lights ,mirrors some trim and bumpers. Scrapped the rest and got me a set of tyres Now I'm into this VT executive sedan for about a grand all up and it's exactly how I would have ordered it from the factory 20 years ago..

I worked at a L-M Point that was the flagship dealer for a small group in Florida . Our body shop would tell the tail about a Mercedes SL that he knew of that "took a swim" in salt water. When it got pulled out the owner dragged it home and dropped it in his swimming pool until he had accommodations to get it repaired. The body/restoration shop stated the fresh water soak after the salt bath probably saved it.

Back “ in the day” I used to install a lot of pop up sunroofs in cars that were “clipped” . VW Rabbits were popular for that. The sunroof eliminated a lot of welding. A friend of mine bought a MG that was made out of two cars, one day her mom rear ended another car and the MG broke in half!

My 95 Mustang has a salvage title. I had just restored it for my wife and a woman rear ended me in it in 2010. Being it was a 95 of course the insurance company totaled it despite having less than 3000 miles on the new engine and transmission. bought it back for a grand and had the body shop fix her back up and it's still at my house today. Runs like a champ. Talking with the body shop guys they replaces the rear bumper mounts, a few braces and the bumper covers. Shot some Sonic Blue paint on the new pieces and boom she was fixed. I think there are a lot of good deals out there where insurance companies just rubber stamp claims when the vehicle could be fixed cheaper than totaling it but they dont want to invest the time.

Salvage Title doesn't always mean stay away. My mom found an 89 Ford AREOSTAR Mini van with less than 60.000 miles. It was a salvage title vehicle. New grill, Bumper and radiator that was all they replaced. Nothing was bent which made it interesting. Minor front end damage had the insurance company total it out. twenty one hundred dollars later it was moms. Drove nice never any issues

Front half and back half. We got married she had a 76 Grand Prix. Brand new Sears radials were wearing out in about 3000 mi. Always noticed the carpet looked twisted. The shady dealer hiding a salvage car is the one to worry about is more of a problem then the stamp on the title. I’ve totaled 2 cars, and rebuilt them before deciding they weren’t quite right and selling them with a clean title. Now salvage is in my wheel house. More vehicle then I can afford. I’m currently running an 08 Silverado 2500 I bought for 4K, I invested 1k, and I will spend 1k in the spring for body parts to make it look right. I remember around 1998 the Chevy dealer had s-10’s for 2500-4000 new as is. They spent somewhere under 30 days submerged in the Mississippi. I didn’t buy one. I even asked the salesman if that was the final price, and it was.

Took a chance years back , didnt have tons of money, did some research and found out toyota tacomas were very reliable ...........so i searched around and found 1998 4 cyl. tacoma 76,000 miles that was mint , ran great , and there were not many around with low miles and great condition ...............only thing that bugged me was that it had a "salvage title"......but I bought it any way , it was the best car I ever owned !!!!...I put 170,000 + miles on that car ......during that tine the only thing i needed to do to it was couple of sets of brakes, tires, a battey and a starter (wich i rebuilt my self with a $4 kit off ebay )..........I got into a little accident and smashed the right fender , bumper and headlight area.....wound up..selling. it to someone else , but it still ran great ..!!!!!!!!.............Erik

Bought a 2013 GTI a few years back out of Atlanta. As I tore the front end apart to change the timing chain tensioner I discovered the car had a front end off of a white GTI welded onto it. They even went as far as engraving the vin number on the quarter panel rails of the replacement front end. It was a good car, but we sold it after that, and bought a new Golf. Damn folks can be sketchy. Our lesson was to hell with the carfax. Give me an hour and a good flashlight to inspect on.

Best purchase I’ve ever made with a car is my Buick, salvage title, 92K miles, 06 lacrosse mint. 92K on it, paid $1000 for it over a year ago, still rockin and all I’ve done to it is change the oil baby.

I worked for a small time dealer that did salvage cars. The only issue was they didn’t fix them right and they didn’t care. I only worked there a few months and left.

A buddy and I used to hit a little car auction in Billings Mt and since we were both mechanics and wheeler dealers we'd come away with the best cars cheap then have to beat the local dealers off with a stick.. but never kept a one

My dad got a mid 70s vette that a guy had claimed for flood damage when hurricane katrina hit. He didnt realize by him doing that and taking the insurance check he had to give the car to the insurance company. They eventually had to get the cops to tell him if he didnt turn the car over he was gonna be arrested so he gave it up. Turns out his garage only got a few inches of water in it and didnt even get close to touching the rockers. So got a mint 4spd vette that was extremely clean for 2500 lol washed/waxed it drove it for a year and sold it for 7800.

My Crossfire was made into a "Salvage" title because the repair was more than a percentage of the value of the car. Got it fixed and drive it all the time. 12500 miles on it when I got it, and now at 16500. Drives and feels new. See my little vid playlist if you like. Edit: It's not for sale.

Pretty much all I buy is salvage vehicles, got a guy that tells you to pick the truck or car you want, then they fix it. You know exactly what your buying and it’s about 1/2 price of a virgin title vehicle.
