I think we FINALLY found out why this old skid steer has been so hard to start! Then it almost started on fire, but with some quick thinking I was able to avoid that!
We'll also dive into a bit more of the maintenance this machine needs and get ready for some massive changes in the cab coming soon!

It doesn't matter how easy the fix was because by going through all of that, you've performed useful maintenance and gained a much better understanding of the machine as a whole which will serve you well for future maintenance. Great job.

Great video as always man thank you. One thing I noticed at 23:05. You are making the same mistake I use to make. I use to get close to my drill, like you were. Until, my beard got caught in the drill and it yanked out a bunch of hair and tooks some flesh with it. Save yourself a lot of pain and keep your beard away from the drill.

The black smoke is probably the little extra fuel they get when first cranking up. You turned the Gehl into a very worthwhile machine, and the video content is awesome, thanks for taking the time to go into detail, we all know how important the time is.

When an engine first starts, it needs an extra amount of fuel to do this. That's where the dark exhaust smoke comes from.

I'd say: install a kill switch in each of your machine. The switch operates the coil of a heavy relay next to the battery/generator. In case of trouble, make the machine go dead by just flipping ONE switch.
@usernamesreprise4068
@usernamesreprise4068 Жыл бұрын
Exellent idea - it would instantly kill any shorts like that ignition switch incident before a fire became a much more serious problem, a better idea perhaps may be to run the battery live lead up to the corner of the engine bay roof and along to a mechanical kill switch located somewhere near to the back of the seat area and then back to the battery,
@frutt5k
@frutt5k Жыл бұрын
@@usernamesreprise4068 Your method is simpler and so better. Period. But it would require running TWO heavy wires back and forth. Many other users opted similar ideas. The kill switch must come in any which way.
@usernamesreprise4068
@usernamesreprise4068 Жыл бұрын
@@frutt5k Actually when I went through the video again there is a longtitudinal box section running forwards just in front of the battery, terminating at the front bulkhead it would only need the one battery live lead conduiting through it, the return lead would be only around 18 inches long as it would terminate at the starter solenoid. but you are right given its propensity to torch old wiring I think its a must have, whichever method is used.

Matt, I like how you are a good teacher and explain what you are thinking and why you do things the way you do. You don't use a bunch of extra words... you just go ahead and make good decisions and follow along with good actions. Matt, you saved the day by replacing the relay so now the Gehl starts fast. By the way, your sense of humor is interesting, for example: "pretty close to right on the money". Blessings to you, Matt.

The original key switch would have just had auto glow plug on ignition, and also a manual option if you needed to glow for longer (turning the key to the left). I used to work for a Gehl dealer in Australia, they were generally a pretty good machine. The track tensioning system on their track loaders is awesome, no grease to mess around with.

Hello search the internet with the model number of the NGK glow plug controller, it should have a connection to a temperature sensor in the engine, and more important a wire to the glow plug light on the dashboard, in your video we can see some holes with lamp´s one o them should be the glow plug light. That engine is a low compression engine by nature, it needs the glow plug´s working to start, it will smoke and not start especial in cold weather situation, good work!

DriChem fire extinguishers need maintenance, specifically every six months or so you need to upend them and tap them a few times with a rubber mallet to keep the chem from hardening into a block or they won't work when you need them. Zip ties tend to make you not want to do the simple maintenance and also in event of a fire getting a tool to cut the tie can give the fire a head start to getting out of control. You want a simple mount where you can grab and go. On the order of a spring clip mount. If nothing else tie it in with a slip knot and twine. A fuel fire won't give you a chance to use a screwdriver. A good reason to keep a clean engine like you have now. She is looking good!

Liquid electrical tape is a must . The reason the switch melted is do to the proximity to so much metal and the terminals not being insulated from metal contact. Glad she starts far easier. A bttery kill switch is a must on all equipment. I would inspect and make sure all fire exstingquishers are less then 5 years old,they go bad over time.

Its normal for diesel engines to produce a bit of smoke on startup. Its the result of partially burned fuel from a cold (not operating temperature) start. Even engines with an ecu and properly tuned tend to smoke on startup.

The flickering on camera from the LEDs is because they aren't dimmed like a regular bulb (just run the filament at a lower temperature), they're dimmed by turning them on and off repeatedly. Our eyes do something to "smooth out" light, i.e. they don't register a change immediately. Cameras however don't do that, so cameras will pick up some frames where the light is on, and some where the light is off, causing the flickering. Now there's also cheap LED lights that aren't dimmable that flicker, but that's because of a very cheap power supply. They basically change AC power into DC by only using one half of the sinewave of the AC. If you'd look at the LEDs at a very high framerate, you'd see them off for 50% of the time, then slowly increasing in brightness and decreasing again as the voltage goes up and down, and they they're off again. Very cheap, acceptable for cheap lighting, but when filming, no bueno.

The autogeneration system captioned the engine trying to start around 4:25 as "[Applause]" and I at first thought you'd added a sound effect because it fired right off 😂 Edit: It also "translated" the sound of the engine running at 7:50 into the word "foreign" along with more applause. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣 Edit 2 (I resumed watching later): 23:10 Dude, you so need a drill press...

On the subject of that oil drain tube getting blocked with crap - simply find a short length bolt wide enough to manually interference fit and screw it in, oh and fit a spring clip on the engine bay wall to hang it, then you can simply remove it next time you drain the oil. it will keep all the gash out of the pipe, and perhaps a new slightly longer pipe will ease the aiming woes in future.

Yeah, I always work on the principal that if an engine has glow plugs, they should be working and they should always be used for a cold start. Once you have the correct key, with the glow plug switch, you'll have even less smoke on start-up. That old Gehl is going to turn into a good machine when you're finished smartening it up 👍
