I turn 60 next month, I was on the school bus when I heard Elvis had died, I got off the bus and ran all the way home in tears, only to find my mother on the kitchen floor sobbing. This song was my favourite then and has been my entire life. it will be my funeral song when my times comes. No entertainer has ever touched the hearts and souls of people like Elvis did. I miss him. ( From Australia )

My best friend didn't get her birthday because Elvis died that day. Her mother made her move out so she could make Sherrie's bedroom into a shrine for Elvis. P.S. I saw him twice. 73 and 74! 3rd row the second time!! WONDERFUL!!!!!!

I was 5 and getting ready for school in the Netherlands. All of a sudden my dad who had left for work came back home in tears screaming “He is dead. Elvis is dead.” He had heard it on the radio. Immediately he put on the tv to look for news about Elvis and we all cried. 😢

I am 61 now, and I remember that we as a family just came back to Holland from Spain where we were on a holiday that summer, and I heard it on the radio it being announced that Elvis had died that day on august 16th, 1977. I felt suddenly a deep sadness in me that I could not describe. It was the first and only time ever that I cried for an artist

I saw Elvis in concert 6 times and watched the Aloha special on tv in 1973. He was an incredible performer who played to his audience. I don’t think he ever really understood why he was so loved. His beautiful voice was with him until the end. Real Elvis fans still miss him.

It's also really important to note that there's no such thing as AutoTune in 1973. This is just Elvis' incredible vocal performance live, on stage, with no post production studio enhancements.

I bet anyone who was actually there would have felt lucky. When I visited Hawaii in 2011, one tour guide said he turned down the opportunity to go. I remember thinking: "Why? You went to see Jimi Hendrix, why wouldn't you go and see the King perform live?" If my mother had been there at the time, she certainly wouldn't have. As it was, she watched the concert on TV here in Australia with her husband and her toddler daughter (me). Not that I remember much, but Mum told me I got excited over the music.

I was 16 and had never paid much attention to Elvis. I was listening to Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and such. My sister and I watched the Aloha From Hawaii at her house. We both just looked at each other and said "what have we been missing all of these years?" From then on, Elvis was everything. We saw him in concert in Atlanta not long before his passing. Great reaction! No matter how many times I hear this song, it sends chills all over me and brings tears to my eyes. Elvis was the best, and I will never forget the day he passed. I remember exactly what I was doing when the news came across the television. RIP Elvis. We love you.

I am from Memphis Tennessee and as a deputy I had the privilege of working his funeral. He was the kindest, most personable man I’ve ever met. His favorite music was gospel. He would come and spend time with deputies because he loved law enforcement. His badge collection is hugh and he even wrote and got an appointment to see President Nixon and received one from him. He would just go up to a person and give away cars, from a deputy to a couple looking for one at the car lot. The first song I ever sang was Love Me Tender and I had such a crush on him. People come here from all over the world to celebrate his birth and death anniversaries. Now droves are coming to morn Lisa Marie’s death as she will be buried at Graceland, along his side ( his daughter). He had the whole package, sing, dance, looks and personality. What else you ask for?

I remember watching that live. It was definitely anticipated. If you were out shopping, or whatever, everyone was talking about getting home in time to watch this concert. The number of people around the world watching was about one quarter of the earth's population. Can you imagine? One fourth of the world's population dropping what they were doing to watch one man sing. That's beyond incredible.

I was one of 7 children. My parents worked/sacrificed to provide for us. It was 1973 & my dad finally bought the family a color TV. My classmates, more fortunate, had color TV way earlier than me. Being a young teenage Elvis fan, I couldn't wait to watch this Elvis-Aloha from Hawaii Satellite Concert on our new color TV. When I saw him perform in his patriotic American Eagle, red, white, & blue jumpsuit on my new color TV, I knew I was witnessing something historic that I would remember the rest of my life. I was eight when this aired and you are correct, my mom, grandmother, aunties and cousins all gathered around the TV to watch this epic performance. You may be aware, this trilogy is in reference to the civil war. Dixie represents the South, the Battle Hymn of the Republic was the song of the North, and I heard someone say that All My Trials is from the slaves point of view. But in my opinion, in this medley, it represents the soldiers on both sides.

@@cindyphifer970 “This song”, An American Trilogy, did not exist prior to the Civil War. The 3 songs (hence, “Trilogy”) it’s made up of did. Combining verses of the 3 songs was done by Micky Newbury in 1971 & 1st recorded by him. Elvis began singing it in 1972 & modified it slightly, by reprising the 3 songs at the end.

A lot of myths have grown around this show, it was broadcast live to many Countries in the far east, and yes, was a tremendous ratings success. However, it was not broadcast live in the United States as the date clashed with Superbowl VII. It was edited and songs inserted and eventually broadcast as a 90 minute " special " by NBC on April 4th 1973, and gained a 57% audience share. The double Album of the show has been certified Platinum 5 times over in the US, 3 times in Canada and twice in the United Kingdom & Australia. A DVD re-release in 2006 topped the UK Music DVD charts. The jumpsuit & cape are now on display at Graceland. The gentleman who played the flute solo, was Gabe Balthazaar, a legendary Jazz " Sax & Flute " player from Hawaii, who played with a lot of the Jazz greats. He died in June this year at the age of 92.

I was 13 when this concert Aloha from Hawaii was aired in 1973 and honestly I wasn’t familiar with Elvis at that time. My classmate called me and asked me if I was watching Elvis. So I turn on my little 12” b&w TV and was immediately in awe of what I was seeing on TV. I had to see Elvis in color so I ran to our living room and rudely changed the channel on our 25” color TV from whatever my parents were watching to Elvis. OMG Elvis was even more stunning in Color! after watching this show I instantly became a lifelong Elvis fan. His looks, his jumpsuit and his incredible voice. Only Elvis could pull off a TV concert being broadcasted live via satellite to forty countries and viewed by over a billion people. I was so fortunate in 1976, I saw Elvis in person.

Obviously, Elvis had a magnificent voice but let's not forget the world-class musicians that were playing with him and those amazing backup vocals. With a combination like that you pretty much had to have a magical end product. Elvis had many smash hits but to my mind where he really excelled was when he sang gospel music, and I don't think anyone ever sang gospel better than he did. I loved the fact that many times he was told that he could not sing a gospel song when he made a TV appearance (on the Ed Sullivan Show, for instance) and he would do it anyway. He had promised his mother that he would sing at least one gospel song in every concert or appearance, and he wasn't about to break his word to his mother because some little pipsqueak like Ed Sullivan told him he couldn't do it. What was Ed going to do? Refuse to have ELVIS on his show? I don't think so.

I was another of those kids who was sitting cross legged on the living room floor, three feet from the TV 📺 watching this very intently. I was 14, and a casual fan of Elvis, because what I had grown up with was mostly his gospel music and ballads that my mom and grandmother played. His 1968 comeback tour showed me that Elvis could rock out a bit too. This show cemented (for me) that Elvis was the consummate performer, The King of Rock&Roll, hell, maybe the King of the world at that point. ♥️✌🏼😎

The amazing thing about EP and this performance in general, is that this type of song was frowned upon. Yet he did it anyway. And he performed it in a secular setting. To hear the crowd erupt in cheers and applause was truly breathtaking. We didn't know what we were watching as kids, we were 5 and 6. It wasn't until much later that the impact was realized, especially after his passing. Now his daughter Lisa with whom I share memories and many similarities, is no longer with us. It is still unfathomable to me. May she have reached Heaven, and experience everlasting peace in the comfort of Our Father, and her Daddy E! ❤ ✝ ✌ 💐

The live performance of If I Can Dream from the 68 Comeback Special may be his greatest performance. I was nine years old when this concert aired. My mom had gone out for the evening and my babysitter let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it. I still remember being awestruck by the entire show.

I truly do remember when Elvis Presley was broadcast live that year, on NBC..it seemed like the world stopped, until this iconic figure was though singing, that's how much this guy was loved by many of millions of people, around the world . And still today his memories still live on, but still I wonder how many more years will he be remembered in this corrupt! Nation that we live in today!..

I was 13, going into my freshman year in high school and my whole family sat down and watched this. That is one of the most memorable moments in my life. Definitely watch the whole concert it is so worth it. Elvis is so much more than what people who did not experience him, think he was. ✌❤😎

My mom and dad took me with them to see E on New Years Eve 1975 at the Pontiac Silverdome. I was only 10 but had a sense of the greatness I was seeing. That turned out to be the largest live audience he ever played in front of!!! Thank you Dad! Yes, I do remember where I was 2 and a half years later....

You can't go wrong with any live Elvis performances between 1968 at the Comeback Special to the Aloha From Hawaii concert in 1973, and EVERYTHING in between. There's plenty of classic Presley music from the '50's and most of the '60's too of course but the King was at his performing and vocal peak in that '68-'73 period, in my opinion. "If I Can Dream", "Suspicious Minds", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Polk Salad Annie", "Just Pretend", "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "How Great Thou Art" and "Steamroller Blues" should get you going in the right direction.

I saw this concert on TV when I was 13. When Elvis walked out on stage my first reaction was “damn! That’s the coolest dude I’ve ever seen.” Then he opened his mouth. All these years later, I still think he’s the coolest dude I’ve ever seen. It’s the return of the King folks. You’ll find out.

I really appreciated your reaction. I was always An Elvis fan because I was born in 1952. Watching this Aloha version always makes me tear up. I came From Three generations of Elvis fans. He was like a family member to us. It is hard to explain how Elvis just made people love him! I haven’t heard any other performer who touched people the way he did. Looking forward to more Elvis. My other favorite is The Moody Blues. They were popular during this same time and still perform today. Question would be a good one from the 2000 PBS special! Thanks!

Yeah, this is one of his greatest performances and shows. One of my favorites. I saw it on TV way back in 1973, when I was 19 years old. Will never forget it. I watch this video at least once a year. Great reaction by you 👍🏻🥰‼️

I was 12 years old when this was aired. For weeks in advance, parents in our area cleared their schedules, bought new televisions, set up in home recording devices and got everything ready so that there would be absolute silence and no distractions. Us kids just played along because the only cool part to us was that this was being beamed into outer space and back down again. Anyhow... I didn't watch it. I wasn't really interested and was hanging out with friends all evening. Nobody ever anticipated that there would be an album released and thought it was a "watch it or regret it" type of deal. and so they did! Every family we knew, at home, sitting quietly, watching history being made. Locally, in Hawaii, the concert never even started until 12:30 AM so that people on the U.S. east coast would view is at 6:30 PM EST (9:30 on the west coast), right after rush hour and supper. The performance ran for an hour and a half.

I watched this live back then..I was a teen who loved music, still do. Elvis loved his fans and did right by them. He had flaws but its not what many want to remember. Its the music and the man who worked so hard at what he believed in. ❤🐻

Such a beautiful artist singing a beautiful song. The Aloha From Hawaii concert is a great showcase of Elvis and his brilliance. I was 11 years old in 1973 when I watched this live broadcast with my family and was in awe even at that age. Absolutely amazing. Your reaction is wonderful.
