This is literally the greatest Tony opening of all time. They were working on it right up until the live show and never rehearsed it all the way through. It was MAGIC! When you commented at the end that they were waiting for something , that is called "holding for applause" and this was one of the longest standing ovations ever (BWay historians can correct me if I'm wrong). Live performers usually wait for the applause to start to subside before continuing, but in this case, it just wouldn't stop!

NPH is a huge magic aficionado and has often demonstrated simple magic tricks during talk show appearances. He did the classic "disappear from a closed box" trick here. He slipped out the back of the box but the contraption was designed in such a way that you couldn't see him come out from the audience. The real feat IMO was him having the enormous stamina to then run all the way to the back of the theater within a couple of minutes just in time for the tv cameras to pick him up. I can't imagine how many calories he burned off for that performance and what his lung capacity is.

It is 16 seconds in total. Must be 2 sec for disappearance and 2 sec for Prestige. So 14 seconds to run 75 meters? In show-clothes? HOW!?!?! (Bolt's World Record 200 meter dash 19,19 Sec.) Must be magic... Or as Mulders poster in X-Files: I Want to Believe.

There’s a video of Neil Patrick Harris doing the closing credits for this Tony’s show that’s awesome. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the lyrics for it live

It's now 2023 - 10 years later - and still stands as the best opening for any awards show ever. NPH is a one man multi-talented genius.

If NPH is presenting, it's going to be an absolute mind blowing balls to the wall banger of a show. That man does not slow down. He gives 150% start to finish. He is the GOAT when it comes to this. Dude has perfect comedic timing, is great as a villain a hero, anything. That man is a god damned national treasure.

The man's not "just" an actor, a comedian, a singer, and a dancer. He's a freaking athlete. Unbelievable--and yes, I've watched this a couple dozen times. Never get tired of it. Has somebody mentioned that this little song was written by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel MIranda? (Okay, I just scrolled down and yes, they did. But it's worth saying again.)

They're a waiting at the end for the applause to die down. That's broadway 101: any time you do something funny or amazing you hold for the laughter or applause to end and then keep going. It's to make sure people in the audience don't miss something they're supposed to hear

So glad you reacted to this. It's my fave awards show opener ever. Definitely bigger! I'm in awe of NPH's breath control, stamina, speed (zipping all the way to the back of the theater however he managed it fr the back of that magic box). Also, jumping through a hoop in pants that tight? Wow! :) ;) Bravo! Always a delight to see this.

fun fact: the only successful run of this number was the tony performance. they never successfully did it in rehearsal. Also, I think you missed it but in the beginning he does a 10 second quick change from fairly casual clothing into a full suit

Most people think he goes out the back of the box but in this set up he goes down into the base of the box and slides into the stairs, which are rolled off stage as the box gets rolled to center stage. Alternatively, those hollow stairs can also be used like a hidden slide, allowing the performer to slide down inside the stairs and through a trapdoor into the floor, if the theatre is built to accommodate. But I'd guess they just rolled him off in the hollow stairs and he slips out the back side which is open. My first year long contract as a dancer was in a magic show in Branson, MO and we did a version of this for our finale where each of us 6 dancers walked up the stairs and waved goodbye then entered a big metal triangle before it was hoisted into the air away from the base and collapsed on cue, revealing an empty pyramid. So in our show we had to slide through the stairs and a trapdoor into a dusty basement. Showbiz is super glamorous like that lol

The first time I watched this, I was left speechless. When I found it online, I saw it like 4 times in a row. Since then, I've watched it every year like 5 times a year. I'm still impressed by it every time. And when he says, "We were that kid", I still get teary-eyed. By the way, the song was written by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, which you can easily tell by the rap section.

Neil Patrick Harris is extraordinary I had the pleasure to see him in Hedwig but to see him to this it is mind-boggling to me and yeah how do you get to the back of the theater and just like 30 seconds without being out of breath thank you for that because I always wondered and how did you memorize every one of those words in a short time that's a truly amazing actor!

I've seen the magic trick explained elsewhere so I don't feel too bad spilling. It's all dark and hard to see but the steps he used to climb the box are hollow, he gets in the box and slides down the inside of the box off stage and the hauls ass to the back of the theater. At least that's how I've heard it explained

I think it was Shia LaBeouf and alec Baldwin had a play but they couldn't get along so it didn't happen. The magic box trix, if you look at the back of it when they twirl it around there's a slit and it flipped in the wind abit. I think he went out the back and just booked it down to the audiance.
