“I am unfamiliar with Sutton Foster.” *musical theatre fans gasp as if they’ve been shot*

Sutton Foster is what you call a "triple threat". Singer, Dancer, Actor. She can do it all. Nominated 7 times for Tony Awards she's won twice. Most Broadway dancers have to know Tap. Keep in mind that you saw a 4 minute version of the song. The Broadway show had an 8 minute version!! It's amazing. Whenever I feel a little down I put on this youtube performance and it always puts a smile on my face.

Sutton is a gift. I dated a Broadway actress.back in the day. I was just stunned what skills, stamina, and intellect she had. I have deep respect for anyone who gets to Broadway.

She looks like she's hardly even trying. Great voice! And as a former tap dancer myself, I can't help but love this. Thanks for this one.

Most of the dancers on that stage are trained professionals. Sutton is as well, but she's such a force of talent that if she had to learn something new for a show or number... she will. Easily. She's truly one of the most talented performers on Broadway.

Love your reaction to this. I have a few things you might find interesting. 1. The music is by Cole Porter. The original dates back to the 1930s, and the music has remained substantively the same, with minor modernizations suiting the current star of the show over the years. Ethel Merman played the part in the original Broadway; hers was a much broader, less subtle take on the role compared to Sutton Foster. Really stands the test of time, huh? An 80 year old musical still holds up. Porter was a genius. 2. Sutton Foster is what we actors call a "triple threat": actor/singer/dancer. There are a lot of triple threats out there, because triple threats get more work. I can guarantee you that every person on that stage has been actively working and practicing to be able to sing, dance, and act at the level demanded by modern Broadway audiences. Sutton Foster is one of the best. So is the guy who introduced her and the cast of "Anything Goes," Joel Gray. Mr. Gray is also a Broadway veteran, Tony Award winner, and a legendary song and dance man in his own right, winning his Tony for an absolutely stunning performance in the role of the Emcee in the original Broadway production of "Cabaret." 3. I was once in a production of this show in high school; played "Drunk" and "Sailor #2," lol. Our tap routines were waaaaay easier than this, but we made it look difficult anyway. We were football players, for crying' out loud. But you know what? I still do theatre. I haven't played football in at least 25 years.

Just came across this. The original production of Anything Goes opened in the mid 1930's. It starred a powerhouse dynamo named Ethel Merman. For a tiny wonan, she had a take no prisoners voice. Back in the 30's, my mother was the only member of her family who had work. Her office was down the street from the theatre. Wednesday were matinee days. My mom would grab her sandwich and sit out on the steps of the theatre. La Merman was so loud, every damn thing she said or sang made it outside to my mom on those steps. She listened to all of Mermans shows like that. It was the Depression. No one had any money.

You should react to the Tony Awards Performance of “Forget About the Boy” from Thoroughly Modern Millie with this same actress, Sutton Foster. She’s incredibly talented, and there’s more tap dancing in that performance!

I 100% guarantee everyone in that cast knew how to tap before they got cast. There are certain shows with requirements in the audition process. The ensamble is most likely all dancers who specialize in tap because this show is a huge tap show. Sutton is also a known tap dancer.

This production came to London in 2021 (with Sutton Foster for a while) and I went to see it twice, it captivated me so much. I'd go again at the drop of a hat. The show was at the Barbican, and another musical I saw twice there, and one I'd highly recommend if you want to look into a more modern musical, was 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Try 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', 'Heaven On Their Minds', 'Damned For All Time'. Off to see 'Guys and Dolls' in a few weeks, certainly be 'Rocking the Boat' for that one.

I'm glad you keep doing these theater reactions. They're so fun! I recommend checking out I've Decided to Marry You from A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder at the 2014 Tony Awards: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKXPlHishamenK8 I think it's hilarious and it's also really impressive. It doesn't explain in the video, but I believe the guy who introduces it keeps changing characters because he plays multiple people in the show.

I didn't know you did MUSICAL reactions! I'm here for it and would love more. Although, I understand it's a numbers decision as well. There are some really incredible performers/performances that are similar to this. Including Jonathan Groff (musical, tv and film actor), who I don't think is a really trained dancer, dancer, who performed this same song and tap dance for a charity.

You cannot get much better than Sutton. If you liked the Shrek movies, she started the role of Fiona in Shrek the Musical (a whole fantastic show in itself). And if you want more musicals to look into, Something Rotten, Spamalot, Avenue Q are a few comedic shows

Sutton Foster!! Love her. Got to see her live once when she did a solo tour. She’s one of the few well-rounded theatre performers. Dancing is less required these days (moreso less required of the leads) because new shows don’t do much of it outside of the ensemble, or they don’t do it at all, but that’s rare. Unless someone has an issue in relation to sound sensitivity, I can’t understand how anyone could NOT enjoy tap dancing. lol

In case you didn't realize, the gentleman who introduced this number is Joel Grey, known for being on Broadway for 60+ years, but probably best known for his part as the MC in Cabaret. And his daughter Jennifer Grey is known for playing Baby in the movie Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze. Anyway, I think you'd enjoy the performance of HAIR from the 2009 Tony awards! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpCxh4yNrs-CsJI

These definitely need more views. I’d love to see you do more reactions. Specifically, the 2009 Tony Awards opening number. It’s the first recession Tonys where they really pulled all the stops to come together as a community to get people to come see theatre at a time where the economy could’ve killed it all. You get the most chaotic eleven minutes of Elton John, mashups of classic revivals West Side Story and Guys and Dolls, Bret Michaels getting whacked in the head by a set piece flying down, a hilariously self-aware performance of “The World Goes Round” by known vertigo-haver Liza Minelli, and it all ends with the casts of all the shows in costume singing Let the Sunshine In with the cast of HAIR. You get so much bang for your buck with that one. I know you don’t get as many views on these ones and it’s been four months since one was posted, but I’d really genuinely suggest it!!

Pretty sure that professional dancers who make it to Broadway could well have some background in tap, as well as many other styles. They would have been training since childhood most likely. As for Sutton ... well, she's just kind of amazing on all counts.

The title song always includes a lengthy, complex tap dance. Anyone trying out for the cast of Anything goes knows this and wouldn't even try unless they were an accomplished tap dancer. Step aside Riverdance for Anything Goes! Many of Cole Porter most well-known songs were in this musical.
