There are a million things you could say about this song. It has everything. The lyrics are the last word in true, tragic feelings. But the thing that blows me away most is that when I hear it, I hear BACH. I believe that, wherever he is, Bach hears this and is weeping. Glad to say that I’m old enough to say this is our music, and we’re so happy it’s being shared with new generations. Thank you.

Probably the most overlooked Boston song, but one of my top 3 from them. I guarantee that few rock music lovers even know about this song. Only negative of the second album is that it is over produced compared to the first. This is certainly the best off the 2nd album. The build up, the emotion, guitar melodies, vocals, etc. Tom is one of the best melodic guitar soloist of all time.

This song was THE song for me when i was finishing my last year of high school way back in 1981. Boston was one of the bands I was into at the time but this song really resonated with me. I had decided months earlier to leave home and go on active duty in the armed forces. This song hit home for me because it described my situation. Growing up in the shadow of older siblings, if I stayed home then I felt I would never grow, always being known as the baby brother. So, leaving as hard as it was, was the best way to fix my situation. Adding to the melancholy was seeing the effect this decision had on my mother. Catching her crying right before I left crushed me, as I was the last child in the home. But I used this song as inspiration to become what I wanted, and I did indeed achieve my dream. Fast forward to Brad Delps incredibly sad death. Learning that he suffered as he did all those years, and the emotion in this song really hit home with me.

Boston is the Rodney Dangerfield of Rock and Roll. " They get no respect " Not in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, My favorite band , nobody can duplicate this awesome sound that they delivered. The whole band are phenomenal. Tom Scholz graduated from MIT and worked at Polaroid. Decided to put a band together. He came up with this sound in his basement in Boston. Brad Delps voice is the best in history.

Tom Scholz, being a perfectionist, was taking a long time to record "Third Stage." There was a flood in the studio that added to the length of the project. The record company (Epic) got tired of waiting and sued for breach of contract. 3 of the band members got tired of waiting too and quit. Sholtz jumped to a different record label (MCA) but Epic sued MCA to keep the album from being released. Epic also withheld Sholtz's $ from the first two albums which also caused recording delays.

Just like the 2 Years between 1 & 2, Tom wasn't Prepared to Produce New Music, since he was Shocked that the First Album took so much to make with "OTHER" Musicians!!! That's a Sad Reality that later occurred, when they had to Play LIVE, and Couldn't Really, Re-Create the Magic Sounds of the Vinyl Recordings! Tom had already planned to take time to really work on the third album, and had told the rest of the band that if they wanted to do other things while he worked on #3, feel free to, and they did: Barry did a solo album - albeit with Brad and Sib - and that’s where the problems started. CBS made it sound like Barry was “the sound of Boston”, which ticked Tom off big time. (Not the Orion The Hunter album, the Barry Goudreau album.)

I love this song. Reminds me of when my parents were going through a divorce in 2000, I was 14 and lived with my dad and he absolutely loves Boston (introduced them to me at a young age) and we listened to them all the time driving around but every time this song came on he'd cry. Broke my heart cuz I rarely saw that. (They got back together and have been remarried for about 22 years) Buts it's crazy how some songs can make you remember specific situations so vividly. Amazing song!

The reason it took so long to produce 3rd Stage is because the band wanted to record it themselves. The record label said no and sued. 6 years in court and the band won the right. The master tapes were in storage and the reel tapes actually stuck together. So the band had to manually lube them to get the recordings. There were sounds on there that even the band couldn't duplicate, but what a monumental work

This song was a cry for help. Bradley Delp was deeply in love with a woman that fame kept him away from. He hated it! He could not destroy BOSTON by quitting and could not bear being away from her. It got to the point of madness for him and she moved on and he killed himself because he lost the true love of his life due to the unexpected fame this band created. They toured to the point of madness! For brad, the fame and money was nothing compared to losing her. He fell into a deep depression and it cost him his life. So anyone who wants fame I say this, You had better be ready to leave your loves behind if you want the big time. There is no disaster like success if you are not ready for it.
@donedwards5150
@donedwards5150 8 ай бұрын
Look up the actual reason for him taking his own life. It had nothing to do with fame or music. It was due to a life where struggles with lifelong depression finally enveloped him and increasing pressures within the band and then one foolish personal mistake that became the final straw for him. The ugly details are out there, but this not the place for discussing his personal flaws, but to treasure his legacy.

The long gap between the albums "Don't Look Back" & "Third Stage" mainly was due to Tom Scholz's perfectionist nature. Since the debut album was such a monster, the record company (Epic) executives wanted the band to record another album as soon as the band finished it's concert tour promoting the "Boston" album. Scholz got to work writing songs, but he also insisted on doing all the engineering & mixing himself, using his own recording equipment, just as he had done on the first album. As you can imagine that was a lot for one person to tackle within the short timeframe set by Epic. They grew increasingly impatient, putting more and more pressure on him to finish production. He finally gave in, sending them what he felt like was an incomplete album; he needed more time to tweak the production on several tracks. He was determined to never let that happen again, so he sued Epic to be released from the recording contract. This resulted in years of legal battles. After the lawsuits were finally settled he broke his hand, rendering him unable to play guitar or keyboards for months. The other members of the band, except for Brad Delp, moved on, not interested in working with Scholz again. So, he had to form a whole new band to record "Third Stage".

There aren’t any duds, no songs you skip to get to the next one. Boston’s hallmark was sonic excellence, on every song. Watching your reactions reminds me again of why i loved this music, though i was just a teen, without sophistication. I’m 60 now, and can better understand the affinity i had for them. Thanks for the reminder, dude.

A Man I’ll Never Be is one of those songs that just keeps growing on you. I’ve been listening to this song since I was a kid in the late 70s and I never get tired of listening to it. The Don’t Look Back album, I think is every bit as good as the first Boston album and I’m glad you’re doing a track by track reaction and can hear the greatness. A lot of people blew this album off initially back in the day but, over the years many have come to realize what a gem it really is. As for the gap between the second and third album, the stories are legendary about what happened and unfortunately by the time Third Stage was released in 1986, Boston was mostly forgotten except by those of us who really took notice in the 70s. By ‘86 the music landscape had changed dramatically and Hard Rock, Metal, and Rap were the preferences. Also, Tom Scholz’s perfectionist tendencies and litigiousness really worked against them. The third album has some really good songs, Amanda was a huge hit for them, and We’re Ready is another good one on there but, the rest is a bit of a let down. In my opinion the first two albums are must listen to and then a few songs on the third. Didn’t bother keeping up with them after that but, I did buy the third album whe it was released. Still only listen to the ones I mentioned.

I left a comment on a few Scorpions "Still Loving You" reaction videos saying that song was the greatest power ballad of all time. But "greatest" and "Best" are 2 different things. "Greatest" meaning the best one that reached a larger audience. A song everyone is familiar with. "Best" means literally the best one, period. "A Man I'll Never Be" is best. Every song on AT LEAST the first 2 Boston albums is the best of the best, because these albums are beyond perfection. People knock the third stage album because it doesn't sound exactly like the first 2 albums. But it's still the 3rd best album of all time. I would put "Walk on" a reasonably distant 4th place, but still better than 99.99% of albums ever made. The first 2 albums I would have to say is a tie for #1

Great reaction. Even though the first album is their best work, this is my favorite Boston song. I remember when this album came out in 78. Me and some friends of mine were at a record store in the mall. I asked the manager of the store when the new Boston album was coming out and he told me this week. Then he pointed to the over head speakers and said, that is them there. "Don't Look Back" was playing. The albums in order 1 - 2 - 3. Do the same through at least the 3rd album. Cannot tell you about the others. I've heard some of the music. It seemed a bit derivative to me. The reason for the delay between 2 and 3 was due to a lawsuit file against the record company. Boston eventually won the suit and switched labels for the Third Stage album. I was fortunate to see them live for this tour in Baton Rouge in 1987. Awesome Concert. Thanks and God Bless.

That was a few of them putting out an album while they waited for the legal issues between Boston and the record company to get resolved.

I was blessed to see this group in 77 or 78 with a little known artist Sammy Hagar opening act. The show was incredible! The center piece of the stage were pipes from the pipe organ that almost touch the ceiling of the stadium. When they piped them out your body rumbled from the intense notes. They are musical royalty. The gap in album release was the result of the bands dispute with Columbia Records at the time. At one point about 80ish a deal had seem to be made and an ad was ran in Rolling Stone with a teaser of a cool new album coming with the space guitar in a blue ice cold planet. The ad simply stated 3. It never released, the ad disappeared. Then finally many precious wasted years later came a new album.

Since you asked... First Boston album is a masterpiece...as you know. The second "Don't Look Back" is almost as good. The third one "Third Stage" is also really good...but it was 8 years later...the 80's and it had a different sound... different vibe... but still a really good album. After that. Well. It was never the same. They had a different singer on "Walk On" but still had Tom's great arranging and production. So it's not bad. Brad came back for a few songs on Corporate America " and they were the best. Another decent album. And then Brad passed away and the final album was a tribute of sorts. A couple of new songs... some reworked "Brad" songs from the past album. Etc. Even Tom finally sang one. A few really nice things for the Boston fan. No matter the personnel Boston always sounds like Boston... thanks to the genius of Tom Scholz. As a fan since the 70's I like it all but there are severely diminishing returns after the 3rd album. 2 masterpieces... one excellent album... and the rest is gravy. But hey...I like gravy...

The first 3 albums are all you really need to listen to. The first is legendary, the second is a worthy sophomore effort and the third is a low-key masterpiece. Beyond that, it's just not the same band.

Can't wait till you hit the third stage. So please don't take as long as it did for them to create the album cuz it was several years believe it or not it's the best one. Looking forward to it I am proud to say I still have the record in my collection.

Tom got into it with the record company on having sole artistic control of his music so he waited until his contract ran out and then recorded Third Stage.
