One of the saddest, yet most beautiful songs ever written. In my top five for probably fifty years now. The lyrics…. “When no hope was left in sight on that starry, starry night, you took your life as lovers often do. But I could’ve told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” Breathtaking.

I remember studying Van Gogh at high school and the teacher played this song while we were painting. He asked us why it made us sad and I said the line ‘this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you’ was crushing because those are the people we need more than anything in it. He gave me a smile and said ‘never forget that’. And I never did Mr.J! 💫❤💫

Vincent did see rings around everything he looked at, a symptom of acute lead poisoning, indicating a level of poisoning sufficient to cause brain damage. Thus, it seems likely that much if not all of Vincent's mental illness was also an affect of the lead poisoning. Ironically, the aberration of his visual perception, the bright rings around what he saw in day to day life, was also one of the most admired affects in his work. A sad life for our genius. His greatness went unrecognized in his lifetime, and he died poor and penniless and alone. Don's tribute to Vincent touches my heart. And Vincent lives on . . . .

I knew this song and loved it long before I had any idea who Vincent Van Gogh was. Later I studied art and further appreciated how perfectly Don McLean captures those paintings in words. I've been to the Netherlands and visited the Van Gogh museum. Sadly Vincent never benefited in any way from his art. We're lucky that his paintings were saved by his brother for us to know. Don McLean has written some real treasures of songs. This is one of the best.

Such a beautiful tribute song, it is a timeless classic in my opinion. Great lyrics such outstanding poetry. When you understand that VanGogh only sold one painting while he was alive, the underlying pain of his life's struggle is punctuated by the swirls and colors within his paintings. He had a wealthy brother who gave him shelter and cared for him but for much of the time, Vincent continued to choose to live on the street. MacLean's vocals are a smooth and gentle as the brush strokes VanGogh laid upon the canvas. Thank you.

1. I can't hear this without tearing up. 2. "Flaming flowers that brightly blaze" has got to be the most incredible 5-word phrase in all of popular music 3. I visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and although "The Starry Night" was not there, there was a still life of pears that took my breath away. And I don't mean I really liked it -- I mean it literally made me stop breathing. The man had just an unbelievable talent.

My darling brother committed suicide a year ago March due to a terminal illness in which there was no hope. This song sends me right over the edge so I rarely listen to it. In Tom's obituary were the words 'This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.' Even in the hippie & folk scene of the time, this song was one of those that towered above the rest. The early 70s was a very mellow time period on public radio after the wild hard rocking late 60s. The airwaves were filled with tunes like this. It was a special time that died out with the birth of disco in 74.

I’m sure some people already commented this. but Vincent Van Gogh as an artist we all hear about had a very very sad story. He never sold a painting, he was rejected by the art community who we’re riding the Impressionist movement . After having a very rough life and totally being supported by his brother , he was institutionalized and his time there was when he came up with starry night. After he was released, shortly afterwards he took his own life with a gun. After a life of trying very hard to get a life as an artist and being rejected by the art world… NOW they sell for huge amounts. I always felt those paintings should NEVER be sold. Only hung in galleries for the world to know his struggles n see his work and to learn from OUR MISTAKES!! why we treat some people like that. We push them away n don’t give them a chance. It’s just a very sad story. The saddest. Some poor bruised yet beautiful soul took his own life because people didn’t understand or listen.

Don recently released a new version featuring Home Free. The video features quite a few of Van Gogh's paintings as background, and some beautiful vocals by Rob and well as Don. ( I think it is interesting that Don chose HF for new versions of both of his major hits)

As a person who majored in English, I can honestly say that this may be the greatest work of poetry in English in the second half of the last century. As a song, it is wonderful - but as poetry, it should be included in English-language poetry anthologies and taught in schools.
