I saw this concert back in 79ish. This song sounded so awesome live. It was so good that it really stands out in my memory, still, all these years later.❤😊 Heart would always end up in Seattle (their hometown and mine) for their New Year's Eve concert. That was our favorite way to spend New Year's Eve.

The entire 'Dog & Butterfly' album is outstanding and this is one of the highlights of the record. Ann and Nancy Wilson always hinted that there was a strong sense of yin/yang to being female rockers and this song kind of epitomizes that. FYI there is a superb live version of this on their Live in Seattle DVD and you can find videos of that online, as well.

There’s a even way better version of this song from a King Biscuit that’s on Wolfgang’s Music, and the best version of Magic Man I’ve ever heard. Of course it has Roger Fisher on lead guitar when they were at their best. I seen them many times but will never see them again. Last time I seen them they didn’t even play this song and it’s one of my favorite songs by them! They would rather play songs from other bands, which would be cool if they played for 2 1/2 hours. They have great songs that people will never hear. Pathetic!!

"Mistral Wind" was a centerpiece of the show when I saw them in 1978; Ann introduced it saying that they'd put the most love into composing it of all their songs. Another wonderful song with a similar yin/yang delivery is "Love Alive" from the _Little Queen_ album, and they still perform it as well.

Such a great tune. Your comments on her voice, both hard and soft is basically the metaphor of their album Dog and Butterfly that this song comes from. Dog represents the hard rock side and Butterfly represents the folky, beautiful side. That album has hard rock on side 1 and long folky songs on Side 2.. The album closes with Mistral Wind which brings the Dog and butterfly sides of the band together.

My all time favorite Heart song. Having lived on the south coast of France I can say that Le Mistral is a real thing. It's why all of the houses have shutters. They are not just decorative. When Le Mistral blows, the shutters keep your window panes from being blown out. To me the story is that she is wishing for a nice little breeze but, careful what you wish for, she gets a Mistral. Parallels to wanting a little companionship but getting a whirlwind romance that tears your world apart.

The Mistral wind is a wind that blows through the Mediterranean region from the North/NorthWest. It is known for it's strength and coldness. It's counterpoint is the Sirocco wind, which blows into the Med from the South, and is usually warm and dry. The sudden changeup in the music represents the power of the gusts from the Mistral, one of it's trademarks. The first part of the song is like the calm before the Mistral comes, followed by the surge of power, then calming again for the end. Beautiful.
@eers2you7 ай бұрын
I always felt this song depicted a beautiful romance (whether between 2 people or a sailor and the sea), calm and enticing and then a tumultuous time, followed by the calm (or destruction) at the end.

I've seen Heart in concert more than any other bands (including at the Grand Budokan Theater in Tokyo, Japan) and one thing is for sure; they sound awesome live! But you have to listen to this song's studio version as you hear so much more intricate sounds. *"It's a Ulysses-type song," Nancy Wilson of Heart explained. "It describes the journey of waiting for the wind to kick up in your life, and then it does, and then it takes you on more of a wild ride than you ever expected to be on - a life-threatening wild ride. And you're a changed person forever. You'll never look at life the same way again."

Thanks. I bought the Heart - Greatest Hits / Live album when it came out around '81 or so. It was a double-length cassette. I didn't know this song before then, and the version I'm used to is the live one on this record. It starts out the same, but then it goes really, really heavy with the power-chord distortion [actually, I think he's playing perfect 4th chords, not 5ths, so it sounds like drop-D tuning]. Anyway, it's one of my all-time favorite live epic jams. Hearts one of those bands you could take someone to see live, and they'd constantly be saying, "They sing *_that_*?!?" over & over again. Pioneering & awesome. tavi.

Heart had so many great hits back in the day and it’s really a tough job to pick a favorite. I had the pleasure of seeing them live back in the late 70’s/early 80’s when bands like Boston, Kansas, Steely Dan, ARS and so many others too numerous to name here were in their prime. It was a great time to experience firsthand. So much good music came out of that time that it’s hard to find a word to describe the creative explosion of good music that was produced back then… other than “orgasmic”.

The phrase "power ballad" hadn't been coined yet when this song was released. My all time favorite Heart song since it came out in '78! This song is kinda their Stairway to Heaven. When Heart was a bar band in Canada they did a lot of Led Zeppelin covers. They even had the nickname of Little Zeppelin at the time. On their live album they cover Rock n' Roll. If you look up early live shows here on KZbin you'll find more Zeppelin covers. If you haven't already you should check out the entire Dog and Butterfly album. The "dog" side is more rocking and the "butterfly" side is mellow and ends in Mistral Wind. An absolutely BRILLIANT, underrated album!

🤘❤🤘 Sweet Reaction! A wonderful acoustic opening by Nancy and intense electric guitars by Roger. According to their 2012 authorized autobiography, Ann wrote the lyrics and Roger, Nancy and Sue wrote the music. So many people, including younger music journalists, believe Ann & Nancy formed Heart. They didn't. Heart was formed by guitarist Roger and bassist Steve in 1963. They hired Ann in 1970 and Nancy in 1974. Ann & Nancy didn't take over the band until October 1979 when the band voted out co-founder Roger.
