I love that the "refrain" for Cars is a synth line. No lyrics, but serves the exact same role in the song.

As a lifelong Gary Numan fan, I loved this! Gary still going strong, still touring, still making albums. Suggest My Name is Ruin for a more up to date feel for his music. But another from back in the day is Are Friends Electric? He also reworked On Broadway. The synth solo by Billy Currie is INSANE! Thanks again.

This was my first real introduction to New Wave music thanks to my older brother (who was WAY into new wave and industrial rock - especially DEVO). I still love the sound of this song - Gary Numan fully embraced synthesized sound.

Oh yes, I was on the dance floor every time this song was played. I am a lifelong classic rock fan, graduated in 1982, so I was already going into clubs at 17, two years before (my sister's ID). So by the time I was in my 20s, the "alternative" music was all over the airwaves. Techno is what my friends and I called it and many bands started following suit using more synthesizers like one of my favorite bands, Rush. I shook my head and was bummed by it all but now, when I hear these 80s treasures, it reminds me how much I enjoyed the quirky artists growing up.

Gary Numan is one of my favorites, his music is amazing and very influential. He uses his voice like another instrutment. He was a big influence on Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and industrial music in general. This song was played extensively in the alternative music dance clubs but I'm guessing those clubs didn't exist in 1979 when this song came out so it probably didn't make the dance charts. Other songs to check out: I Can't Stop it, New Thing From London Town, Call Out the Dogs, My Breathing. God Only Knows, I Am Dust. Great stuff!

Numan's "trick" was to use the synth as a lead instrument in an otherwise orthodox rock band set-up, which gave his records a "snap" that most other synth artists lacked... you could argue that he was just aping Low/Heroes-era Bowie (and Ultravox/John Foxx for that matter), but he was a real tunesmith and had a great image, and I love that he's still going and hailed as an innovator to this day... Next stops would be Are Friends Electric (another UK number one) and Down In The Park, released under his former name of Tubeway Army, enjoy!

GREAT reaction! I love that most of this song is instrumental! And when he does sing, he just sings along with the instrumental riff. When Malcom McLaren came to NYC in 1979 or 1980, he saw (for the first time in his life) break dancers break dancing to this song. (which led to his track, "Buffalo Gals". Great record). LOVE this record, it is a perfect record. As you say: catchy as hell!! Production perfect, performance, and restraint not to sing all over every moment of this song, and just let the music do all the work. The idea of a top ten record having so much instrumental sections is unheard of now!

If I can be allowed a couple of suggestions: Thomas Dolby (especially “She Blinded Me with Science”) and just about anything by Alan Parsons Project, with “Sirius/Eye in the Sky” probably being his best known. Cheers!

Gary was a big influence on early '80s New Wave - the synths, the sound. Didn't sound like anything else, at the time. Bands like Tears for Fears, Africa Bambaataa, and Nine Inch Nails claim Newman's work influenced their own sounds. Aw - Adore by Prince was blocked?! As a wedding minister/officiant, I like to recommend that song for the first dance. Only slightly risque, since you have heard it now. Hope you can get it back up - would love to see your reaction!

Even though you had acts like Kraftwerk doing a similar style years before, this was in the mainstream. It was a big deal for electronic music. What's interesting to me is that he put out an album very recently, and it's really good. It's rare to have musicians popular in the 70's and 80's putting out a new record I like. They usually just end up mimicking what is popular, or they evolve past me. Gary Numan - Saints and Liars from 2021 - thumbs up.
