Her 2019 Gold medal in the 400m was one of the most jaw dropping performances in history having run 48.14 seconds, the fastest time in over 30 years. Despite there still being questions about her whereabouts violation, she is back on the track this year and is entering a very competitive Women’s 400m field. This is a very important video, and thank you so much for making it and giving a balanced and nauced commentary. You have my respect. Salwa never tested positive for any drugs. Knowing a bit about her personally (was with her in Nigeria during the Christmas of 2019), I can say she was very careless and frankly distracted with love (another story). But she is not a drug cheat. I am happy she served her time and was not given special treatment. However, I also want to say that there was always a narrative of her sudden rise, and that is not true. She rose steadily through the ranks on the African and Asian and World youth circuits. The fact that she doesn't have an NCAA or European history doesn't invalidate her rise. She is back, and I know she has been training like someone with something to prove. I am hoping she calms down and comes to the boil slowly. She doesn't need the gold medal this year. 2024 Paris should be her focus and where she should answer all questions. I wish her well. In my opinion, she is the only one with a realistic propect of breaking that WR. Her coach posted a video last month where Salwa put a new WR in the 400 as her 2023 goal. I wish her well. But she should slow down or risk injury. Fun fact!! Her coach, who took her to 48.14, is the same coach that Paulino has. He is the Steven Francis of the 40om. Lol. And also want to clarify, sure I had questions about her situation, but never about her quick rise or even if she was doping. I really dont think that because she was tested I think 19 times in 2019 anyway. But my questions were just with the process and the strange confusing dismissal of that one whereabouts failure. But like I said, I dont want to be questioning, I rather be excited to see what she can do! Naser is a one in a generation athlete and is one of the best ever. Thats really cool the you know her a bit from some years ago and I agree that she has the potential to break the World Record! It will be tough but possible! And yea! I saw Salwa for the first time in the 2017 WAC. What impressed me was her grit and determination. If you watch her races since then especially when she is challenged you will see a real fighter. With her diminutive stature and age she quickly became one of my favourite athletes. My opinion on the fight against drug cheats is that apart from clear cut failed drug tests, it’s really hard to take a totally righteous stand with inconclusive cases. I believe that we should trust the anti-doping authorities who are doing a great job in making it less an less attractive to choose banned substances. I feel there is likely to be increased focus on athletes coming back from a ban so I’m exited to renew my interest in watching Salwa’s progress. By the way great video as usual. There is unfortunately an influx of “analysis” videos that are total rubbish but tend to be the first to report on content. As an athletics fan eager for content it’s extremely frustrating to have to waste even 10 seconds on them. Keep up the great work.

However, the advent of the 400m hurdlers really does throw it much more open. I really wonder if anyone can beat Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone IF she chooses the open 400.

Not sure if whereabouts failures definitely means she cheated but that race where she took down SMU was a stone cold classic. I'd like to think that anyone doping would be caught with actual tests. I hope she's competitive at least. She's still in her prime and hopefully has a chip on her shoulders. I think SMU will never get back to sub 49 shape after having a child at her age so she's probably out of the picture for the future. From her comments before announcing her pregnancy it sounded like she was going into the heptathlon.

Completely agree that race was a classic. The best race of 2019 and one of the best races in the past decade. But your right, she is still in her prime and has the potential of go sub 48 and faster so well see. Your right that Miller-Uibo said she planned to leave the 400m anyway. And I don't blame her. She she could have gone for sub 48, but at this point, she has won everything. Double Olympic Gold, World Champion, World Indoor Champion, World Youth, Junior, Commonwealth etc... She is the GOAT of this generation. Aside from the East Germans, Mari Josee Perec is probably the only one overall ahead of her.

Athletes don't exist in a vacuum. Naser is an elite athlete, meaning, apart from her coaches she has an agent and a manager and is a member of a Sports Federation. Now, apart from the Federation, all these people are employed by Naser and it's not in their interest to sit back and allow her to engage in the kind of reckless behaviour that would end with a three-year ban and subsequent loss of income for all concerned parties. So, with all this in mind, I'm wondering why her team and her Federation didn't stage an intervention after the second whereabouts failure? After all, the Federation had something to lose if such a high profile athlete was disgraced over such a serious matter as repeated whereabouts failures. That they allowed 4 whereabouts failures to accumulate under her name without calling her to order is the best piece of circumstantial evidence to support any claims of PED usage. So, as much as I love Naser's smooth and elegant running style and her blistering speed, I will never be able to get behind her no matter what she achieves in the future. I can't think of any athlete in the history of the sport who has self-destructed so badly if all this is simply down to nothing more sinister than a careless and lackadaisical attitude towards sporting regulations.

Great job on breaking it down on Naser! I read somewhere that the AIU, supposedly, showed up at the wrong door in her apartment complex on the 3rd whereabouts. She does not seem to be too fluent in English, this may be a big barrier for her with the drug testing. But, it seems to me, way too many black athletes have problems with the AIU. Hmm, 3 years off from competing. I would say that she will be on the right track if she breaks 51 secs when she returns. I seriously doubt she's going to break 50 secs in her first outing. Her best bet to run well, is to begin at an invitational where she doesn't have to run sections to get to the final. I doubt she is ready to handle multiple high quality races over the course of a few days like she would need to do in a diamond league event.

I'm sorry, but it was always suspicious to me the way Naser made an almost 1s improvement in her 400m PB from 49.08 in Jul '18 to 48.14 in Oct '19 despite relatively modest times in her 100m (11.24m), 200m (22.51) & 300m (37.92) during that period! Her blasé statement re missing 3 drug tests was just bizarre! Was a shame she didn't start any of the 100/200m races she entered @MJ Invitational this past wkend, eager to see where she's at after 3.5yrs out of the sport! Paulino for me has been quietly & steadily making gains since 2019 in her 100m (11.44 to 11.38), 200m (23.03 to 22.36) & 400m (51.88 to 48.99). She also quietly ran 35.16 in the 300m 5wks ago which is the 3rd fastest ever behind Shaunae's 34.41 & Masilingi's 34.60! She easily gets dismissed imo as the WC 400m Gold Medal Favourite w/o Shaunae, Syd, Femke & Britton running the event!

I hear you there. I never really had questions about her rise or significant drop in time in Doha. There are many athletes drop significant times all the time, and also 100/200 may not be as indicative of 400m performance for some. Look at Kirani James who has consistently run 43, but never touches the 100 and 200 (he ran 20.6 the year of his 43.7 PB). My questions really are around that strange case of the tester not being able to find her location and then her saying missing 3 tests is normal. But yea wanted to see her this weekend, but well have to wait and see. I still think she can come back and win gold if things go well. Paulino definitely has been on the up and up. And she is a late bloomer, so despite being in her late 20s, she is getting better. But I'll be honest, I dont see Paulino has a odds on favorite if Bol, Wilson or McLaughlin are in the 400m. I think thoes 3 are the best 400m runners right now if they chose to run. But also want to say that if Miller-Uibo was not pregnant, I would bet on her to win Gold regardless of who is running. I really dont think we've seen a 400m runner like her since the days of Perec or Sanya Richards-Ross, meaning a strong 100/200/400 threat. Steiner I think is in that realm but she is focusing on the short sprints.

@@TheFinalLeg My point was less about her 100-300m times and more re the huge drop in her 400m PB as there's no other clean female athlete in history I can think of that has dropped almost 1s specifically from a low 49s PB to a low 48s PB. The drops in times don't get that large for women once they hit low 49s especially without some history of progression! Even Shaunae went from 49.46 in '17 to 48.97 in '18 (0.49s drop) to 48.37 in '19 (a max 0.6s drop)! There was a steady progression in the years leading to her 48.36/48.37 PBs in comparison to Naser! Yes Paulino's a late bloomer as she literally didn't start running the 400m properly till 2021 as a 24yr old as she'd run far more 100/200m races till then, plus I literally inserted the caveat that "w/o Shaunae, Syd, Femke & Britton running the event" this year, she should then be the WC 400m favourite given both her back-to-back Olympic/WC Silvers, 48.99 PB & recent 35.16 300m PB (3rd all-time). Love Shaunae (10.98/21.74/48.36), but would argue that we've seen that 100/200/400m threat in Shericka Jackson (10.71/21.45/49.47) more so than Abby Steiner (10.90/21.77/50.59 indoors). Since levelling up in the short sprints, we just need to see what Shericka can truly run in the 400m if she ever commits to it again full-time! In an interview last year, she said she expects to run 48.3 - 48.5 if she went back to the 400m FT and I think she can, but not sure if she'll ever go back to it FT!

Sure they are early season and she said she wont run anymore this year, but I hope we get to see her try the 400m one more time for a season. though with the Olympics next year, it doesn't seem likely (at least when shes in her prime) Unfortunately the sample size for low 48 runners is tiny (basically 6 women) so its tough to compare. PB progressions of the top 8 all-time 400m women: Koch: 48.94 --> 48.60 --> 48.16 --> 47.60 Kratochvilova: 49.01 --> 48.61 --> 47.99 Naser: 49.55 --> 49.08 --> 48.14 Perec: 49.13 --> 48.83 --> 48.25 Bryzgina: 48.98 --> 48.96 --> 48.60 --> 48.27 SMU: 49.44 --> 48.97 --> 48.37 Kocembova: 50.41 --> 49.67 --> 48.59 Freeman: 50.04 --> 49.61 --> 48.63 Kocembova and Cathy Freeman are outliers here and actually had more drastic improvements than Naser to a degree. Kocembova ran 50.41 in 1982, then 49.67 in June 1983 and 48.59 in August 1983. Freeman ran 50.04 in 1994, 50.21 in 1995, then 49.61 in July 1996 and 48.63 at the 1996 Olympics Both like Naser, had a massive jump in terms of from 1 year to the next. You can actually argue both were more significant because they never broke 50 entering the year they ran 48 seconds. Naser at least ran consistent 49s throughout 2018 before Doha the next year. Kocembova obviously had questions though so theres that, but Freeman is the one comparison here with a huge improvement, and she is basically a legend in the 400m But overall, I hear you about the improvement

11.24 and 22.51 are not modest times but Salwa is a 400m runner, not a 100m or 200m runner. Running fast times in the shorter sprints doesn’t guarantee success in the 400m. Never had any doubts about Salwa Eid Naser, she’s a pure natural talent- if more Nigerian girls had the same opportunity, Nigeria itself could produce lots of world champions

How so? I noted that she was doing amazing when she was young in 2015 and 2016 when she was 17 and 18, but she was not well known yet to most in the track world until 2017. I never said she can't make it back, I actually said she CAN make it back this year and win gold especially if she opens up with 50 or better. But even if she opens up slower she can still make it ill just wait and see. And this was only a prediction for this year, maybe next year she is running 47. Thanks for watching!

I was suspicious about that 48.14 the night it happened. Such an extreme drop in PR, plus, to my eyes, there was just something unnatural about seeing a runner put the petal to the medal from start to finish in the 400m. NO ONE does that. There was no pacing, just all-out. I hope she makes all of her tests and stays clean so we have nothing to question.

That's fair but look at Miller-Uibo who ran 48.36 solo in Tokyo. So it's not crazy. We'll see what Naser is able to do this year and next. She's still only 24 so very very young as well

I didn't see pedals to the medal straight thru. I saw she nailed that 2nd turn and a strong finish. She had been working on doing that for 18 months and continued competition with Miller Uibo brought that greatness out.

To clarify: I question the process of dismissing one of the whereabouts failures because if the confusion and I also am disappointed in Nasers comment that missing 3 tests are normal.
