For the second time in less than two months, 24-year-old Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei has taken a world record from Kenenisa Bekele. After breaking Bekele’s 5,000m record on August 14 in Monaco in 12:35.37, Cheptegei on Wednesday ran 26:11.00 in Valencia, Spain, to dismantle the 26:17.53 Bekele ran in 2005.

@@moaningpheromones EXACTLY! Thank you! These new fans are so frustrating when they praise achievements like this. Cheptegei and Gideys track records shouldn't have been legal. I can't believe the IAAF allowed those attempts as legal. Kenenisa and Tirunesh Dibaba got robbed. For true lovers of the sport tho they still remain the record holders.

Bekele was my favourite runner, so disappointed that he no longer has the record, but at least he held it for a very long time. this guy is incredible. Will be very interesting to see if he moves to marathon when he's older & what he will do there. I think he could probably make an attempt at the half marathon record now tbh lol.
