Gates' point about "metacognition" is spot-on I'd highly encourage you guys to check out the work by cognitive scientist John Vervaeke, specifically his video essay "AI: The Coming Thresholds and The Path We Must Take" I think that more and more of his predictions will bear out over time...

I think what is needed - which will make the bots _not_ slower, yet still better, and more human like in their ability to reason - is to take this concept of meta cognition and parallel compute _while_ talking to them. I.e. the models need to _anticipate_ , based on current context, and historical conversations and preferences, what questions you might have coming for it. So not just start calculating after having been prompted. This will make all the difference. No need to thank. 😛

yeah that does make sense and prob will open up in some way with new hardware (like that Groq company) -- the big question is will the software be able to start making designing it's own hardware eventually

​@@AIForHumansShow I'm hopeful the new models, like latest Claude, are less straining on the energy grid. At least per calculation, though it likely is still more consuming overall. Maybe someday we'll reach more of a general _distilled_ algorithm, less energy consuming, but that remains to be seen. At the very least could _this_ be what finally pushes people over to veganism - we simply _must_ allow these AIs to grow the way they need, and if Hunter McSlaughter needs to change his ways, well... Win/win! 😎 Of course, a world in which the AIs are self-improving, i.e. they understand what is needed to understand things better - talk about a distilled algorithm! - we are in for some very strange metaphysical philosophy, and possibly also a runaway intelligence.

@@AIForHumansShow What does it even mean for the software to design its own hardware? At this point, I'm pretty sure NVidia uses like 10 different AI models in designing their hardware and they did say that without AI none of their chips would be possible. So what really still has to change? Humans being fully out of the loop on hardware creation? There is a website listing all the ways in which AI is already involved in making better AIs, which goes over all the things including in hardware optimization, training, training data, etc. etc. where AI models are already being used. It has over a hundred entries.

Yup, "metacognition" is a word we use in psychological / cog neuro research all the time. I have already had neat responses from Claude 3 Sonnet where I've said, "Do the thing, then assess the quality of the thing you did, then provide a second better response if there were mistakes in the first version" and it has successfully done this. I've only played with it a little, but it does seem like a great idea to have a critique-pass of the answer before going out to the user (albeit with slower response times).

when bill gates says two cranks of the wheel, i don't think he's talking about years. He's talking about orders of magnitude. a next model being 10x bigger and one after that 100x bigger and that being just about all the data including synthetic that they can expect we'll ever be able to throw into training. I had to say this quickly I hope it gets picked up, AI being able to dream better than humans do would allow observational learning and decentralisation of entertainment past anything we've seen before, AI showing us how to build a fusion reactor properly bit by bit would be unprecedented and could save billions to trillions in a few years/decades. Not only this but decentralising research and knowledge to allow every part of the world to improve economically would be too good to not take that chance. If you think AI would kill humans, just ask how many humans are willing to kill humans, we already have the tools currently being mass produced at unprecedented scale, just saying.

is it a bubble of investment? surely. but clearly this isn't like a random investment bubble for something that doesn't have mainstream usecases and ultimately world changing possibilities. the tricky part is getting it to the place where useful (and ultimately economically viable) things can be created. most middle sized companies are likely gonna flop hard - but the big tech cos (who do have other revenue streams and can afford to keep up investment for a while) and tiny start ups are likely gonna do very well

Gavin! I hate it. Why mess with a good thing?! You guys are always second guessing yourselves. But you have fans and not that you should always be crowd pleasers but formats matter and routine matters and if you keep fucking with it that will be the reason you lose an audience. If it’s a logistics thing then you should hire a program manager to help you figure out a win win… working in a vacuum is never good… neither is crowd pleasing but what you do is a tv program more than a podcast. What would really kickstart your show in my opinion is a live audience format… better yet what would an audience of AI’s cheer and holler or boo for…? That’s fun content. Although you seem to be geographically apart one of you could have a live audience. Plenty of places in LA you could do it too. Just a thought. But seriously don’t mess with a good thing…. Keep the AI co-host but instead make it a guest and keep it short and funny. Format matters
