No, Sam Altman is not trying to raise $7T in funding. What he said was that the sum of all the investments, from data centers to land and other infrastucture, would need to be somewhere in that ballpark for a venture like this to succeed - that too, over a span of many years. This includes investments made by partners (like Microsoft) and governments. That is not all that unreasonable. CNBC needs to do a basic fact-check before they have a panel discussion on something like this.

@@religionisapoison2413 But the difference is that the news is treating it as a 1 time payment, you wouldn't calculate all the different investments including stocks over the course of 20 years with Apple as a single investment/funding, you would see what their funding was annually, which is how we calculate everything. When people talk about our taxes funding things, we think about it annually. And usually on plans it'll say the time frame of which how long the funding will be given, for example if the US Defense got 1 Trillion dollars, it'll probably be over the course of the next 5 or 10 years, not just a lump sum. As well, that was just an estimation by Sam.

@Username-ct9fe yeah it's worth that much but chip factories cost like 40 billion to make. Makes no sense to calculate the cost based on the company sales or revenue. You calculate the startup cost based on the asset values, legal/ip, the salaries, insurance, etc. Not sure anyone calculates startup costs based on incumbent company values.

"But 1T is..." No it's not. $1 trillion is roughly 6x the TOTAL amount of money invested in ALL STARTUPS globally last year. You cannot raise this amount of money via Venture Capital. Not even FAANG could do such an investment - it's 3-4x their combined total cash-on-hand. Heck, not even the US government could finance this as it would be 17% of the national budget (by contrast landing man on the moon maxed out at 4.4% of the US national budget). Totally nuts to think he could raise a trillion dollars or anything close to that.

You don't need the whole 7T all at once. A US public/private consortium could do this over 10 years. All the chip designers and fabricators have an interest in this as do the software and consumer product companies. Make this open source; the winners will self select with manufacturing efficiencies and software development. Establishing standards and interoperability allowed the PC explosion. This could be similar ,only capital is pooled, and the result more transformative and important to national security. You want to be invested in the potential leaders, now.

Even dozens of lesser-known chip designers are using AI to design next gen AI accelerators. It's been going on for a few years now. The TechTechPotato KZbin channel covers this. It will take 10 years for an engineering major to get enough hands on experience to involve in the most advanced chip. They do not drop from the sky. If you've followed Sam Altman you'll come to the conclusion that regardless of whether he turns out right or wrong, you can never say he didn't think big enough. When Sam was head of YC, he had a vision to fund the entire world of startups. To build chip fabrication in the US will take trillions of dollars. $7T is not off the mark. What he's envisioning will at least be a combination of TSMC, NVDA, and INTC. NVDA is already a $1.78T market cap company. Given the amount of time it would take to build a chip fab from scratch, they'll need more than that alone. At $7T, that's only 4x the value of NVDA. Keep in mind this is at extreme best case a 5 year project. Likely 10 year if on a fast track. They will need $7T for that whole time.

Big whoop. I think big too. I think about a water pipeline from the rain forests of the NW USA to the desert SW USA in order to save tens of trillions of dollars in homes and businesses located in areas that may run out of water, like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and much of California. I even made a detailed plan of it called the Oregon Water Project in 2009 and submitted it to numerous water agencies and elected representatives from all the states in the plan and here we are today, 14 years later, with Lake Mead on the verge of going into dead pool status because of the lack of water. But hey, Sam Altman and AI, ChatGPT is going to save the day for everyone...with "virtual water" people can drink via their metaverse toaster sized headsets...

Also, thinking big is only half the game. Executing the big idea is a whole other beast.

Until it isnt a ridiculous idea and then millions of people are forced to move en masse, causing economic chaos. @@id10t98 That's definitely not true. Being an owner is a different game. You have to make sure the food is good and financials make sense. The bubble from the last few years showed that if you give startups a bunch of money, it won't guarantee their success. In fact, it ultimately served as a detriment. Money is necessary for big projects, but it does not guarantee success. Like I said, execution is the actual hard part. Getting money is relatively easier than getting the job done.
