Soul!!!! The moment I knew I needed it was in 1974. I had always like Motown, but the day I knew I was deficient was at a Mardi Gras parade in Biloxi, Miss. I was in marching band, and we had finished the route and had gathered to watch the rest of the parade. After some floats and run of the mill Sousa tunes, lo, and behold, came a band the likes I had never seen. For certain it was from a HBCU, and I seem to remember it was Alcorn State University. The drum major was wearing a fitted jumpsuit - maybe a bit Bowie-esque in retrospect. He was moving down the street with his back almost at 45 degrees to the ground making huge strides. He didn't have the normal drum major mace, but rather the baton more commonly (at that time) associated with the majorettes. He was twirling it like crazy, and then he threw the baton on the ground, where it landed on its rubber end and flew up into the air. He caught it effortlessly. There were probably dancers, but I couldn't take my eyes off of the drum major and his ultimate cool. The band struck up with Eddie Kendrick's Keep on Truckin'. I was simply blown away. I've seen nothing like it since and it changed me in a profound way. I always hoped that this talented performer at the head of that band went on to have a wonderful career in music. Jamel could you please do some classic soul - a little pre-disco? Eddie Kendricks (Keep on Truckin) would be cool, as would Ohio Players (Fire & Love Roller Coaster) or Marvin Gaye (Me & Mrs. Jones, What's Going On)

Well, my friend's brother, who really was quite a racist, loved...loved...loved soul music. (Go figure, right?) He really got me into the soul groups from back then...The Temptations, Four Tops, Sam and Dave...any one from Motown. Once I got into that music, I never looked back. Except for some awesome Beatles albums that came out after that. I really believe that it was music that helped bridge some of the racial divide back then. RIP Donald “Duck” Dunn. Looks like most of these guys were the backing band for Jake and Elwood (mainly they were the SNL House band in the 70’s). Drummer looks like Willie Hall on drums, sax might be Lou Marini, and I can’t tell if the trumpet player is Alan Rubin or Tom Malone. Love me some Sam and Dave. Keep up the good work good sir. These videos always help ease the day

That video features the ORIGINAL musicians who played on the record! Epic!!! Sam Moore is the guy with the higher voice, Dave Prater is the other. Sam Moore is, fortunately, still with us! They are a legendary soul duo. This performance was done in the early 70's. The original came out in 1967.

All right, I hope this is the start of you diving into 60's - 70's Soul music. I would love to see you react to Low Rawls, Isley Brothers, Rufus Thomas, The Mar-Keys, Edwin Starr, Jackie Wilson, Little Milton, Joe Tex - just to name a few.

The Mar-Keys were were also a group from the Stax Label as well as the Bar-Kays.

You should really do Marvin Gaye "What's goin on" I think its the most significant song for the year 2020.

I remember my brother bringing this song home on a 45 single in the 60s. It sounded cool then, it still does.

Recommend “Shadow Dancing” by Andy Gibb. The Bee Gees younger brother

These two are just amazing!!!! One of my favs in my teens. Later add some Wilson Pickett, Joe Texx, Wilson Pickett, Aretha and you got one of my favorite driving play lists.

A few years ago I was at the Lowell Music Festival and one of the acts was the Stax Music Academy Alumni Band (Memphis soul). The band consisted of high school and college students. They played songs by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Wilson Pickett, and other Stax superstars. They were so good. It was so cool seeing this young generation bringing this music back.

Haha, I reached over to crank my speakers up just as you said, "Turn me up!" It's such a pleasure to watch you listen to songs. I find myself movin' and shakin' and nodding along with you, and beaming when I see the delightful expressions that cross your face. Your channel is a shining example of the brightest side of social media: its power to connect and uplift people. That's something to treasure, especially in these times when many of us are socially isolated. Thanks for treating us to these two songs; I'd never heard a live performance of "Soul Man," and it was fabulous! One more thing: Have you ever listened to Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens? You might like "Home in the Sky."

Me and my sisters were into 80's hits... the first MTV videos... but my parents played soul for us, in the car, in the house... Sam and Dave were revered names in our household, along with James Brown and Aretha Franklin. We did not appreciate it, but now we know better.

The best, the original, the best sung, the most soulful, and the most exciting version. Listen also to them doing the great "Hold On, I'm Coming". The earlier live, black and white version of this is far better than this one.

Others have probably pointed out, but the guitarist in this song, is also the guitarist for The Blues Brothers. The Colonel Steve Cropper. He is a legendary song producer. He did many Otis Redding songs also. The Bassist is Donald "Duck" Dunn, also went to The Blues Brothers.

Sam & Dave were nicknamed "Double Dynamite" because of their stage shows, where they sang and danced the whole time and sweated buckets. On KZbin, there's a version of Hold On I'm Coming from a Stax/Volt tour in Europe in the 60s where you can tell how much they've been sweating already because it closes the show.
