Hard to believe Sam would have been 90 years old next January. The first African American artist to write his own songs and own his publishing. He offered a very eclectic mix of music through his career starting with the gospel group The Soul stirrers in the early 50s where he does a wonderful rendition of Touch the Hem of His Garment. he became a secular artist in the late 50s and his breakthrough it was you send me. I could go on and on about this man's music but it speaks for itself. I would really enjoy your reviews of some of his Classic Albums such as Night Beat. What a tragic loss the details of his death murky to this day. another great presentation!

You are right Trey that this song is an absolute classic. A masterpiece. This is truly a great song and performance. Rolling Stone rated this high on their list at 12. I really like the backstory you told Trey on the circumstances of this song and the timing of when Sam Cooke sang it and afterward the Beatles eclipsed it because of their overwhelming popularity. Your sister made some good comments on what she thought of the song. You are both right about the message of the song being powerful. Your sister gave this a high rating and Trey gave this the highest rating for a song. I'll have to agree with Trey and also give this a 10. Great song choice for a reaction.

Without a doubt one of the greatest songs ever written. No question in my mind that Sam Cooke is the greatest singer who ever lived. The King of Soul. *Very* few artists I’ve listened to more in my life than Mr. Cooke, and perhaps none that give me stronger feelings of nostalgia of my youth. My dad had a collection of old Sam Cooke records that introduced me to his music as a very small child and it was love at first listen. I honestly think I probably know every single word to every Sam Cooke song haha. Powerful is nowhere near strong enough a word for A Change is Gonna Come. It’s been covered by everyone and their mom (The Band and Otis Redding’s versions are particularly great), but there is no better version than the original. The ‘30 Greatest Hits: Portrait of a Legend’ compilation album is probably the best greatest hits album ever assembled in my opinion. Couldn’t recommend it enough for anyone looking to get into Sam Cooke. Unfortunately he met a very tragic end, but his music will live forever and ever. Always wonderful to see new listeners. Touch the Hem of His Garment, I’ll Come Running Back to You, and Nothing Can Change This Love would be three I’d recommend reacting to. Three of my favorite songs of all time.

The verse that was edit out was the third verse..." I go to the movies then I go downtown... somebody keeps telling me.. don't hang around ".. Sam's timing, phrasing, style and vocal range..is impeccable..Fine tuned by his Gospel heritage and roots...first with the Singing Children, then the Highway QC's and finally The Soul Stirrers...Many believe his best work was done in Gospel.. I tend to agree..

Sam Cooke. Brilliant. I remember being very small when my dad bought one of those absurd multi-album Ronco-kinda special compilations (like 10 records of the hits) in a 7-11 - you definitely have to be of a certain age to remember these. I heard a lot of good stuff on that when I played the records, but Chain Gang and Only Sixteen and Wonderful World by Sam Cooke blew my mind. I had to beg for a full Sam Cooke record. And, I got it - The Best of Sam Cooke. I wore it out. Knowing the Dylan fans that you guys have become, you should check out this Dylan performance at the 70th anniversary show at the Apollo Theater in 2004. Some good history about the connections between these two artists. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWnOqaNvjL-snbc

A great,meaningful song,with a superb singer,only fools would not be knocked out by it,in the 1960s,try this guy,"BROOK BENTON" 1/ MOTHER NATURE&FATHER TIME" 2/ LOVE ME NOW,[both early sixties,] then,as powerful,[maybe lyrically, more so] as "Change" this tune,late 60s, 3/ OH LORD,WHY LORD" for Me personally,even more powerful,where unusually,He gets deeper,soulfully,becoming impassioned,with lyrics,that are totally meaningful.

Well thanks for your reply,my reasonng , & motivation,is to direct you,and others, towards a Singer [ESPECIALLY if unknown, [for Me,beginning in 1959 when music was dominated by R/ROLL,] the driving factor? to direct those who possibly missed this SUPERB [the ONLY word that fits]Singer,to a pleasure that I enjoyed, for Decades, hopefully,a pleasure shared, which, for my money,is truly a worthwhile effort, all these songs are deep,[try to anticipate the next line, practically impossible ?] the nearest match,to "A change etc ,is" OH LORD,WHY LORD" "with it's incredible lyrics, and with a Singer, who goe's deeper as the song proceeds[becoming impassioned],which for Me, can MATCH,or surpass ANYTHING most people have ever heard, the stupid sound engineer, lowered the volume,on the closing lines, which are ,"SO WITH MY ELUSION,GOE'S MY Daily PRAYER"so please have a listen, possibly for your own pleasure.Which I would be amazed, after hearing these songs from this Artist, you cannot enjoy.

Great tribute glad some things passed on one generation to the next, truly epic song. Apparently Sam was killed in part due to his refusal to yield to whites who insisted on taking control of his career as was usual with blacks in the 60's.
