@@Gk2003m I don't know, if you go back and look at their receiving core, it was one of the least talented in the league, and the offensive line was not terrible, but they were weak at Center. Their running back room was led by a respectable but at best average journeyman, and the depth had no particularly notable talents. They had one of the weakest offensive rosters in the AFC, and in Darnold's second year it got more difficult due to a rash of injuries to what little they did have. Beyond that ,yes, there's definitely something problematic with that organization from a systemic standpoint. I'm legitimately stumped on what the Vikings should do. Sign him to a larger contract? Trade McCarthy? Let Darnold fall to a different team? This doesn't feel like a bridge, qb in a game manager role, this is a quarterback who is a massive part of why you are winning. Do you risk losing him or do you risk wasting a 1st round pick?
@metsrus2 күн бұрын
I wouldn't go all in just yet. Reward him for this big season, but let him prove this season wasn't just a fluke when defenses make adjustments, before you make the big commitment. Part of the problem, is teams impulsively giving massive contracts to players after one good year, remember Daniel Jones 40 million a year?
@suspiciousactivity42662 күн бұрын
You have to understand that the system here and the players here really propped him up. Like do you remember Nick Mullens throwing for 400 yards last year? Sam is a very important piece, but he's not the one driving.
@legupff2 күн бұрын
@@suspiciousactivity4266 System definitely matters a whole lot, and I'm glad to see that pointed out. Lot's of QBs seem good, or bad, because of the team they are, but not so much due to who they actually are as a QB. But the team will not win with just anyone. They did not fair so well with Dobbs and Mullens, despite some statistical moments. The defense is better, but the offense is also significantly better, as well. Darnold is a cut above a lot of guys. Sticking with McCarthy, who wasn't really trusted by Jim Harbaugh when the game was on the line, could be a steep fall.
@legupff2 күн бұрын
@@metsrus Daniel Jones played for arguably the weakest surrounding NFL offensive roster in the league. Certainly over his career with the Giants. He's a bit of a fall guy. Among all QBs with at least 25 starts in the last 3 seasons, Jones has the highest On Target rate of any QB. That's hidden because his receivers were at the bottom of the league in both getting open and drops. He has some flaws, such as taking too many sacks, but he has a lot attributes which would work in a better system.

I couldn’t believe there was ever a question what the Vikings should do. He is only 27 and he has the team at 13-2. You sign him long term! No question! The NFL is starving for good quarterback play, the Vikings get it and now people are saying the Vikings should let him walk?😂 People have lost all common sense. JJ will never ever be as good as Sam is now. I’ve always thought he was overrated at Michigan and was picked way too high in the draft. No team should ever make a decision about the quarterback position based on what they HOPE a guy MIGHT be in the future. Especially when they have a guy doing everything they need already playing the position.

While Darnold seemed like a bad QB on the Jets, it's notable that the Jets did not win a single game during his 3 years with the team while Darnold was out, and he missed about a dozen games. That's how inferior the roster was compared to other teams. They could not win a single game with an alternate QB (alternates, league wide, win about 41% of games, on average). The roster makes or breaks so much of the perception surrounding a QB. Darnold is clearly fit enough to succeed with an offense like this.

The Jets didn't have anything remotely close to Jefferson, Addison and Hockenson. When you end up on a franchise like the Jets, and the back ups come in and can never win (quite literally), that reveals so much about what the starter is having to deal with. I've made this case about Darnold with friends for years, and I've also been making this case for Daniel Jones. The Giants have barely even scored and offensive touchdown since they released him, and I believe their QBs have more pick sixes than passing touchdowns since that time. Jones may have looked bad, but with what he's had to work with, it's a miracle he had even one Pro Bowl season.
