Many, many people grow up in a broken family. People divorce all the time. Many kids rarely or never see one of the parents again. Sam is not alone in this experience. It's always a shame and always leaves scars. At least he says his childhood was happy, even without the Old Man. That's what's important, the child grows up knowing comfort and love so they can pass that on to future generations. Sam is a sweet person. His Mama did well.

I dont think his lack of a father figure has too much to do with his still being single. I think he was trying to get his career on track and successful before becoming seriously involved with anyone, once he got the part in outlander his career skyrocketed. Much to his own surprise. Since then, i believe he has been enjoying the popularity he gained, and now thst he is at the age he is, he us ready to look for that mrs. Right. He just needs to look for a " girl next door" type instead of stars and models; because he is a very humble, beautiful man who deserves a woman who would be interested in him and his life, without having in terferences from her professional life, and he wouldnever ask her to give up hers for him. Thars just my opinion.

I have wondered myself if Sam’s unresolved feelings about his absent father has contributed to his difficulty forming and maintaining romantic relationships. It has been heart breaking to watch this totally handsome, kind, and sensitive man who would seem to be the perfect catch for a long time relationship minded woman seems to have the worst luck with the women that he has been seen dating. He keeps going for physically perfect but shallow women instead of maybe less perfect but steady and kind women who (like Claire after Wentworth) is willing to brave the darkness in Sam’s past and build trust with this beautiful and deserving man so he can find personal happiness. Lacking self-confidence, he may feel he could mess up and duplicate what his father did to his mother (abandoning her) when he was 18 months (not three years) old and ruin some eligible and nice woman’s life. Being a nice guy, he may be worried about inadequacy in this area of his life with no present father when he was a child to guide him through how a man should have romantic relationships. Ironic since so many of us fans adore Sam and would be happy to give him comfort and to bolster his low self-confidence. He can only bury himself so much in his work to defer working through his emotional difficulties. I so wish I could help him know how wonderful and special he is and be the one who could give him the support he needs. ❤

I don't think it's tragic. Look at the way Sam turned out-a wonderful, funny, kind, humble man. Everyone goes through sh!t in their life, it's all a matter of how we navigate it that ultimately matters. In regards to being in a long term relationship, trust me, when his soulmate arrives he will know it. You don't find love. Love finds you.

Either he needs counseling to figure his past out or he’s so self absorbed he can’t focus on anything else but himself. Both doesn’t make him a bad person or unkind at all but one thing is for sure, the only way to let go of the past and to know your purpose is to believe upon the Lord Jesus, repent, and surrender your life to Him.
