I’m glad to see someone finally doing a serious scouting, hunting video of this place. I think most people think of Texas as being high-fenced brush country but this place is unlike anything they could dream of. It’s mostly flat with hard to distinguish edge habitat, and the impenetrable thickets make it a deer hunter’s nightmare.

Ain’t that the truth! People don’t understand how difficult Texas deer hunting can be until they’ve hunted east Texas.

Don't be showing pins on my hunting woods!! Isn't Davy Crocket closer to yall? lol Good luck trying to find a turkey! lol You have to hunt that thing for years and scout a TON to find any decent spots it seems. Its also disappointing that Texas isnt more like other states as inTPWD and Forestry dont work hand in hand to clear and plant attraction areas for wildlife. This is primarily where I do my hunting for my channel :)

9:00-11:00 LOL story of my life! Been scouting multiple times a year for 3-4 years in national forests now... its no joke in sam houston and davy crockett! All this time, ive yet to tag or even pattern them out there. I love seeing you guys on national forest land though. Keep the videos coming and hit my line when you have cracked the code!

I have questions guys. I have never hunt before. So, do you must need a handheld GPS before heading to a national forest ? would you get lost if you don't have one? would cellular signal work in the dense forest ? good signal or not? Or should I use a Garmin handheld GPS ? what is the X hunt app that you using, is it a paid subscription app? thanks for feedback

I've harvested a few good buck from there. It's not he same as 20 years ago. Smaller and a bit more trashy. If you're willing to go deep you'll find good deer. They're super alert and pressured alot. Opening day gun season is crazy packed and weekends are packed as well. Lot of hunting pressure. Go deep.

Thank you guys for making this video.. It makes me feel less inferior as a deer hunter. I've been hunting sam for quite a few years now and it is very difficult to pattern them. I've been told that deer will visit the same areas, and use the same trails, year after year. My experiences so far in Sam show me that once you find those areas where the deer are living, and you leave ANY amount of your scent behind, or they see you and blow their warning signs.. They tend to evacuate the area often times for months, but sometimes for YEARS. The best trail I ever found had rubs, and scrapes down a single trail for over 100 yards. I could not count the # of deer tracks as it was so heavily traveled. I hunted it many morning and evening hunts and only ever saw does.. The next year NO DEER SIGN at all on that trail. Each year I go back checking to see if the deer are using that trail again and sadly... no... They have abandoned a trail for the last 3 years that had HEAVY tracks, and sign. Something changed that has caused them to move away from that area. I have managed to kill a good 3.5 year old buck-the FIRST and ONLY buck deer I've ever seen in all the years I've hunted there. I have him mounted on my wall at work as a reminder that they do exist.. It was sheer luck getting that deer. Just being in the right place, at the right time, and he walked right up on me. No skill involved. I think he had a death wish.. Or the forest was like "okay, he's hunted here 8 years in a row and NEVER seen a single buck deer.. maybe he has earned this".. and then sent the deer to my location. That's how it feels. So.. persistence pays off I guess. The area I killed that deer I've hunted numerous times since then and have never seen another deer there, nor any sign, and looking at it on a map there is no reason any deer would ever be there... I know it's weird, but I have the mount to remind me it happened. he was over 200 lbs on the hoof, and has an inside spread that is 14.5", and is a solid 8 point. Good luck to my Sam hunting brothers and sisters!

Please don't blatantly drops pins on the map, it doesn't take much to look at a map and have everyone hunting one spot. By reducing the size of the map, you allow others to keep their spots safe and your viewers happy with content.
