We all love Polly Farmer. My father was a lesser known player of that era. A very humble man who I miss to this day. The likes of Farmer, Skilton, Barrassi, whitten etc mean little today but we’re legends to the communities who rallied around the clubs. They were not millionaire professionals like today. They worked real jobs and shared the trials of everyday life that we all do. A great generation of men is now leaving us. We miss them all.

IMHO no-one abused Polly Farmer in Victoria because they were simply in awe of his skills. Sam Newman's comment about receipts is so true. I went to a match at Geelong, when they were playing Melbourne. Polly was rucking, and Ron Barassi had presumably decided to try and upset him by staying down and grabbing at Farmer's groin. The next time Polly went up in the ruck, he took the ball in both hands and brought it straight down into Barassi's face. It sounded like a cannon shot. Barassi staggered away, end of tactic. It was beautiful, because I doubt whether it was even reportable as striking.

Many rate Leigh Matthews ahead of Polly in 'best ever' discussions. Mathews was a super player, no doubt, but he could be a dirty bastard. He ended Barrie Robran's career and I saw him flatten Barry Cable at Subiaco. Then there was the infamous Neville Bruns incident. Polly (by contrast) was scrupulously fair.

John Coleman is the only player I can think of to have played less games than Polly and have an equally long standing impact in the game. Polly sounds like he was the ultimate team player. From what Sam said, he always tried to bring youngsters into the game. He had a big heart.

My best friend's mother was a Lancashire woman with no interest in Aussie rules. However, she stopped preparing the Sunday roast after Mass to watch Polly on World of Sport, sighed and said, "oh he's such a handsome man!" Her husband Bill, a Geelong fan, allowed her the brief infidelity of the mind because it was Polly.

Little remembered fact: Farmer signed to play with Richmond in 1955 as a 20 year old. However, the Tigers couldn't win a clearance for him from East Perth and they already had the best ruckman in the league in Roy Wright, so the agreement lapsed. Farmer didn't come to Victoria until 1962 when some thought he might be past it.

I like Sam Newman and the fact he says it as he sees it (You know the Australian Way) and for that many bag him. He always said he had respect for Polly and he was the next in line to take Geelong to where they were going. This racial abuse crap must end as we all get very emotional when we go to a game in the AFL. Adam Goodes drew his attention (abuse ) himself . Polly went about his game and used that to show how good he was.

I don't think Goodes did that, he did things to try and make society better by taking a stance and Australia hadn't matured enough at that stage to handle it. I know racism exists in other parts of the world, but there are subtle things that we are behind in.
@michaelmarshall1713

@@Manseb I have met Goodes and prior to his outburst he was a good person and player but then ? He became like many others . He made very nasty comments about The ANZACS and he stirred up spectators at games with his spear throwing antics and if any white player did that what would have happened ??? He brought the game down that had made him a well paid (white fella $$$ ) star. The white guilt crap has gone too far I am from here and my father fought for the nation and had he not the Japanese would have over run all and slaughtered all and the Aborigines would have been first .

That's crazy talk. What do you mean what would happen if a white player shook a pretend spear at the crowd? How is that hypothetical of use or relevance? And the Anzacs are stupid. If you want to do something to honour the memory of your ancestors then divorce yourself from stupid ideas that will get you killed in stupid wars like they were.

I remember Polly being interviewed on the Footy Show, he said John (he never called him Sam) was a very good player, and that he cost Geelong another Premiership, that was because Sam had severely damaged his Kidney in an earlier game and missed the Grand Final - which Polly thought Geelong would have clearly won.

It's not "Racist" to call someone a complete Flog of any nationality, colour or creed. Why do you think players like Polly Farmer, Cyril Rioli, Buddy Franklin, Micheal Long, Gavin Wanganeen, Peter Matera, Shaun Burgoyne, Barry Cable, Stephen Micheal ETC.. These are the players that real AFL fans look up to as legends of the game.. Why?? Because they didn't act like "Flog's" They are all held in high regard.. Judge people on the person they are. Not on where they come from or the colour of their skin..
@Manseb
@Manseb 4 жыл бұрын
Racism doesn't just mean insulting someone because of their skin colour. It can be systematic, institutional and complex. Attacking Adam Goodes for calling out and not tolerating racist chants by that girl, was itself racist, painting himself brown to mimic Nicky Winmar was racist and plenty of his comments sbout preferential treatment of indigenous players was racist.
