Couldn't disagree more. It's easy to make a call like this when you know the outcome but given the information Essendon has at the time .. they made the right call ... every team is looking for a certain type of player so it's not just the best player but the best one for what the club needs.

Pretty sure Melbourne or St Kilda would of said in trade negotiations for pick 9 that if you dont hand it over, we're going to bid on Kako before essendons pick and hence rendering it worthless. Bombers got great value for it with the dees pick next year, which could honestly have a decent chance of being a top 3 pick if they continue to slide. That Ablett bloke should not be on tv, got no idea

Literally guaranteed being able to take the best small forward in the draft. Didn't want to use pick 9 to do it. Probably tried trading up to get above a potential bid, no-one wanted to trade down that far. Also had almost no other picks in this super draft. Although they didn't get a second top pick in this draft (take Kako as their first), they got a future first AND multiple later picks to take more players and match the bid. Imagine this bloke if they had kept the pick and the Dees or StK decided to bid on Kako, swallowing up number 9 to pay for it. If they had tried a live trade at a bid, they would have got rolled for peanuts in desperation. This would have to be up there with one of the more un-informed comments I have heard for a while, from a supposed 'draft guru'.

Rosa did the right thing. Essendon now have two picks in next years draft. The only regret I have is that we lost out on Anderson.

The bid would have been made prior to pick 9 if Essendon did not trade the pick. They would have had no leverage to attempt to live trade on the night.

North failed. They should have approached the Tigers to swap pick 2 for 6 and 18. They would still have got a gun mid and a gun key foward and kept their future no 1 pick. The Tigers would probably have taken O'Sullivan and still got the later picks that they were chasing. Tigers won that big time.

Agreed. O’Sullivan is a poor pick up when the last thing North needed was another mid. In saying that, as a tiges supporter, i’m so glad we got Smilie with pick 6. He’s gonna be a gun right out the gates.

Add that with Philipou, Windhager, Owens, Henry, Wilson, Garcia and the potential inclusion of LDU as a free agent next year and you have a very solid, young, midfield. Don't forget King and Tauru at both ends of the ground

@@Jeepers234, when drafting a player, you don't get players who will be good in the next 3 years. You pick players who will be good in five years. In five years, the Saints will have Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Wilson, Phillipou, and Collard, not to mention Ownens who could easily play midfield now. They have been drafting midfielders for years now. If they drafted more midfielders this year, they would have no key position players in 5 years.
