Sam Roberts knows his history. He graduated from college with a Bachelor's in History. He's from Quebec. Quebec, Ontario and Detroit, down through New Orleans, were all part of what was known as New France, until about 1760. And Mr. Roberts wrote a song chronicling Detroit, pronounced as "Day-twah" in French. It's refreshing to have someone sing a positive song about Detroit for a change.

My grandfather told me that Detroit was called "New Paris". He might have made a mistake. (New France = New Paris. Eh?) Grandfather Gilbeaux was French Canadian but we grew up in Detroit City. OMG. His stories about the riots of '67. I was born in Detroit in March of '67 just before the riots.

Anyway, being born in Detroit City in 1967, I love this song; not just because it's a great song, but nostalgic for me.
@cnm2908 Жыл бұрын
@@ryanallen1396 You and Joker6.0 responded to my comment that I wrote in 2010, lol. I had to refresh my memory. Detroit was called "Paris of the West" in the late 19th, and early 20th century. I was born in late July of 1979 - exactly 12 years after the riots.

I'm Canadian from Toronto and this is one of my favourite songs. The great thing about Canadian music is that it always represents Canadian values and with this song and video just re-iterates it. To me what Sam is getting at with song is that right now Detroit is struggling but let's get back to the basics and remember Detroit for who it really is. I love this song!! Makes me feel proud to be a Canadian!. Detroit is on it's way back up.

Very cool B. Now 11 years later the once great & safe T.O, is fast becoming a scene from Blade Runner.
@louurich90872 жыл бұрын
@@RPMZ11 If by that you mean we have a fast growing tech industry, then you are correct. If you are trying to say it is some dystopia, you are completely wrong. I was here back in the day, and I am here now, and lived many places in between, and Detroit is earning the title "the Renaissance City." It is like night and day from the 80s and 90s in many parts of the city. There still may be work to do, but we are one of the few places in this country not afraid of that.

The city looks so much different now. They drive past so many landmarks and about half of them are completely restored. Detroit is one of the most exciting places to live right now... at least until the rich forces us all out. 600 dollar pieces of land going for 100000 k now. All of north end is owned by a few companies.

Yeah, it's funny-- I found this video back in 2010. Watched the bejeezus out of it and recognized 80-90% of the streets and buildings from when I used to work downtown. Almost 10 years later, I watch the same video and I note all the places that have been restored, redeveloped, or renovated--for the better, of course. But it's funny: the video intended to capture the grit and blight of a city in decay . . . and it inadvertently became kind of a time capsule of the "last days of decay" before a major surge of reinvestment, redevelopment, and and restoration began. Downtown is again alive and vibrant--which is a LONG WAY from when it was empty and desolate on nights and weekends--and Midtown continues to attract as the university and cultural center. The neighborhoods still need a lot of work, and hopefully their day will come as well. Here's to better days in The D.
