His voice is amazing and so soulful! I'm obsessed with this video. You guys need to get Morgan James to do this. Her voice is mind boggling and just as soulful. I guarantee you've never heard anything like it. She's signed with Epic Records.

I don't understand how some people think songs should be solely covered just as they were originally sung. He clearly isn't off pitch so thats not the issue..I am moved because as a lover of music he made me see things and feel things whitneys version did not. Yes whitneys is absolutely untouchable. But to sing that same song and bring a new meaning, is talent and what music is all about.

ummmmmmmmmm............. I dont think I compared his version to The Ever Phenomenal Ever Immortal voice of Whitney Houston, I merely stated that he made her proud by hitting the right notes and singing in a great pitch. I agree with him just writing a ballad as he did make the song a tad of his own, but I believe he was really just singing from the heart with a twist on a great song.

I dare anyone else try and sing as this man has! Black, white, brown or yellow...soul is about singing from the heart and that is exactly what Sam Smith has accomplished! He paid tribute to Whitney by covering such a soulful and beautiful song and he did her justice. So before anyone condemn or rant and rave like Trapper John's comment below, they seriously need to stop allowing their past or the color of their skin to hold and tie them down! Soul is soul no matter your skin, raw talent is just that! No matter how you look or big your size. Discrimination and insults seriously irritate the heck out of me. Think before you speak people or do us ALL a favor and just sit there!

@jessicaharkins7123

Kameria...Soul is NOT a type and form of music! It is the spirit that lies within us that makes us who we are! Soul is the creation of who and what God created us to be...definitive enough for you! Soul music is actually quite the same thing if you research it. In that era African American singers were given the label as soulful music due how n the style they sang. In comparison other style of music very bland and monotone, thus the term "soul" as it means to sing with passion and heart...to sing from the core of who you are! And I'm sorry that your "music" is annoyed! Ignorant comments annoy me, so I "guess" that makes us even!
@jessicaharkins7123
@jessicaharkins7123 10 жыл бұрын
Lol I already discussed Soul music which I am well aware is a form/style of music. Slow white girl? Maybe you need to take the time to really know the history of music...and yes Google will have that info. Try researching first before you throw that my way! And when I said soul I was referencing to his spirit and how he sang. Soul music originated from the South during a time when other genre of music was very bland. I simply stated he sang with soul. And gladly I get on the short bus if that keeps me from ignorance like yours!
@jessicaharkins7123
@jessicaharkins7123 10 жыл бұрын
Carlton...No one was dismissing anyone's history!! If you take the time to read properly you will see that I was complimenting the history!! I'm seeing ignorance is contagious and as for your slur, a woman can enjoy ones music and talent without disgracing herself! Especially a daughter to the King! May that slur go in the Book of Life!

I think it's a very subjective view to say that sam smith is not stereotypically "hot". I think if you did that you would have to define a stereotype-something which i believe is pretty impossible in the 21st century. I do see the point you are making, however, as the music industry can be cruelly narcissistic.

This is a beautiful, beautiful cover; so sentimental. Interesting and artistic choice to sing it in 2nd person, using "you". I have to acknowledge that the choice is also a way for him to avoid saying he, while not lying. And that's respectable and smart, actually. But fuck he really can sing haha. His inflections into falsetto are inspiring. He needs to take note though that he tends to sing consistently flat at the ends of phrases with sustained notes like at 0:37, 0:48, 1:00 and then in the second verse as well. The keyboardist was doing a phenomenal job accompanying and changing the chord progressions until 3:33; look at Sam's eyes haha, like ftw dude. It could have worked if Sam would've gone to the pickardy third as well. Nevertheless this is outstanding. I love Sam Smith!
@dainismichel5864
@dainismichel5864 10 жыл бұрын
i was actually glad the accompanist threw that in there. picardy is ending on the major third in a minor piece, so that's not what happened, unless you use the terminology differently (or i'm hearing it differently). i just hear I-IV-V-I in C Major & dude threw an A chord in as a substitution for the root. you're right about the vocal commentary, i've sung stuff in falsetto like that and emotion sometimes trumps intonation. still i really like this performance.
@iLolz19
@iLolz19 10 жыл бұрын
dainis michel I could be incorrect in my use of the picardy third, but from internet research and my own opinion it can be used at the end of a phrase as the cadence where the prevailing key is minor, in this case the song is in A natural minor, not C major; so it would be a picardy third going to an A major chord. I didn't have a problem with it either, but Sam's vocals didn't take it there musically; he sang a C against a C#, so it clashed. And yes in the moment, it being live, and just being human does affect intonation. I wouldn't have pointed it out, but I just noticed a patterned which can be problematic. And I try to be analytic even while loving a performance as too many people get so caught up in hype. Appreciate your comment.

I've seen a lot of people talking about which version is better. This version or the original? It depends on what emotional focus and lyrical emphasis you're looking for. Now before I go on, the original is always the best (musically), simply because it's the original. There would be no cover and alternate arrangement without it, and the original has the most pure intent of the song from the creator. My opinion? I personally like this cover way more than the original. This song is a love song. Read the lyrics and think about it without listening to any version of it. What emotion does it evoke? What picture do you get in your mind? Love is intimate, tender, calm, yet ferocious, intense and joyful, among other things. These lyrics, in context to love, makes me think of what emotions most love songs touch. They tend to be way more on the slow, tender, very emotional side of things. To me, this slow version resonates far more powerfully than the original and I also like Sam's voice more than Whitney's. Both versions are great but to me this version more accurately portrays the emotions in the lyrical content than the original.

The chord at 3:31 was definitely a mistake (if that's "jazz" it's jazz by way of Schoenberg... I love how non-musicians can't hear the difference) but it was more of a death *glance* than a stare. Laugh. More importantly, it's been how many years since Lana popularized the "funeral chords" piano arrangement pop song fad... are we almost ready to move away from it yet...?

Alright it's getting to that point where more people see this comment, including the vast majority of the world that can't sense a joke when they see it. 'Death-stare' is a bit exaggerated, yes, but it doesn't matter because it was a JOKE. No comments about 'waa waa it wasnt a death stare' or 'waa waa its supposed to be that way' SHUSH. IT WAS A JOKE. thank you.

I must admit that this is one of the greatest tribute (if this was) to Whitney. Here in the Philippines, a lot of singers also paid tribute to Whitney by doing a rendition of Whitney's song, but what they did was to either oversing or undersing it. The lyrics were greatly sacrificed by doing so. Mr. Smith made his version of this song without oversinging nor undersinging it. I once commented on a video of Filipino divas singing Whitney's song saying they are remembering their idol. They sang every song in a higher key, and they put a lot of high notes on the parts where high notes are unnecessary. I said that Whitney's version of those songs were serene, solemn, meaningful, and pleasant to the ears. I said what they did was far from Whitney's bar. What I get was a bunch of idiots saying I don't know what singing is. Obviously, they weren't singing-- they were shouting.
