It's probably Americans (I'm American and I've seen how obnoxiously "extra" my people can be when excited) thinking that if you don't express excitement with screaming and clapping then you hated the surprise. Every culture is different (I mean, most Japanese sit and listen at concerts without screaming and wooing, in order to enjoy the music), and everyone's expression of excitement is different. For me personally, I've done the jump up and down thing before a couple times and I've done the stock still with a nervous grin before too, and both meant I was excited.

anienitsuj Obviously they do. Otherwise why on earth would the Maid of Honour surprise them with him. People express their emotions in different ways. Just because they didn't scream at the top of their lungs like little teenage fan girls doesn't mean they weren't genuinely excited. Plus they were probably in a bit of shock, as I would have been.
