anyone would feel blessed to see this ancient village abandoned and being taken over slowly by nature (and wasps) !! the sewing machine cabinet was an amazing find. perhaps they left it behind because it was easier to take just the machine itself the actual container it was in, perhaps too cumbersome to take. everything was so compartmentalized. I wonder if perhaps families each had a room and eating was more of a communal affair, all together as one unit. much like families did years ago before the advent of distractions such as televisions and tv dinners. to think that life never really changed for these people, they lived and worked the same way for 100's of years making wine and farming to make a wage, using utensils handed down to them by other members of the group. such a simple uncomplicated life, free of the burdens of modern industrial society. thank you so much for this look into the past !!
@johnkeyes2723 жыл бұрын
Free of the burdens of modern life,I would rather have the"burdens" of flicking a switch to illuminate turn a tap to drink, you must have noticed no road so probably no transport not even horse and cart unpleasant existence isolated to avoid persecution probably
@christinemaskell55183 жыл бұрын
@@johnkeyes272 Just to be clear on my statement let me say this...although their life must have been more simple because times were markedly different, socially, economically plus living too far away from other communities. I would not wish to live the life they did to be sure. Although less complicated it was also a hard way to live. They lived the same way for perhaps hundreds of years, not knowing any other I am sure they were content in that. Turning on a tap for water, flicking on a light switch for electricity is not something I would give up either. Back when the village was thriving I am sure the look of the terrain was much different. Now it has grown up with all manner of plant life, obscuring what once had roads or trails they used to navigate their way from place to place. Persecution was no doubt an issue at some point, being so far removed served them well in the long run.

Sam and Jess - fantastic video. I have a close friend who was involved in the Yugoslav civil war of the Nineties - I wonder if a little historical research on the village might reveal its role in that particular catastrophe - perhaps the reason for the rapid abandonment of the place was that people were caught up in the conflict?

I have theory about random rooms. Back in time before rules about building homes. I think as families grew they just added a room and more rooms for elderly relatives. "It's raining, put your coat on and get upstairs to bed " LOL I loved the video, it would be a nice place to live but I didn't see any toilets .I don't think I could live without a flushing toilet. That was pretty neat. About 40 years ago J.C. Penny's company put out a set of table and chairs that were beer barrels. I always loved that set. Now when I see those barrels, being a crafter, I wish I could get them and turn them into a set. Worth a lot of money I think. Being brought up not to waste anything, I hate seeing objects like furniture and dishes, especially China, left behind.

Beautiful country. If you ever get the chance you should go to Novi Sad in Serbia and the surrounding towns/villages. There is the Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad that is beautiful, it also has dungeons, tunnels and hall that goes down for four storeys and is approx 16km long. Sremska Mitrovica, a town about an hour's drive from Novi is beautiful, full of ruins dating back to the Roman empire. The house I stayed in was similar to those you saw. No running hit water, heating systems. Very simple lifestyle but grapevines, melons growing in the garden. It was common to see watermelon sellers on the side of the road and miles of corn fields. Would love to go back and see more of the country.

Absolutely mesmerizing Sam and Jess!!! They all look like they fled in a hurry. I’m reading up on the history now. I was just so worried about you guys and the scorpions and bugs and spiders. I guess I’m just like that. Also a mom and a Grammie. Also had a black widow crawl across the back of my hand when I was gardening at night. It was so hot that I waited until it was dark and the heat had gone away. That will be the last time I do that. I’ve noticed this is been the worst year for black widows which are really deadly. And that’s in town!!! Needless to say I was doing the heebie-jeebies dance out in the yard screaming. I’m glad my neighbors didn’t come running. I would’ve been totally embarrassed LOL. I can’t wait for your next spot. This was just incredible. Thank you for risking your necks to show us. As always… Sending much much love from Central California💜😎🇺🇸😘

Black Widows aren't aggressive and try to avoid contact with people. We had a Black Widow that lived above the front door of our house for 3-1/2 years and another one that lived about 2 feet away from my bed for 2-1/2 years. Never had a problem with either one of them. From what I understand Brown Recluses are more aggressive than Black Widows.

Modern times, in Yugoslavia, were still prosperous and all of Biskupija was well known. Knin was a major railway crossroads and a strong industrial center of the region. Many young people of Popovići decided to build new houses and moved closer to the main road. Old village was slowly getting abandoned and almost all of villagers moved out till 1980s. The Croatian Liberation War in the 1990s also had an impact on the village as many locals took refuge in Serbia with some returning after the war. The old village, luckily, was not destroyed.

0:35 What a sillhouette! A great way to open the video, Jess! :) 3:00 Edinburgh Airport?? There must be a reason for that! I used to fly in and out of there a lot for work, back in the day. Always came back with a pack of smoked salmon until Waitrose started stocking it. 3:30 ‘There she is’ - Yes, it has been a while, hasn’t it? 8:35 Let the camera linger a little longer! If that writing was ‘Ovo ne depaite’ (it was unclear) it is Croatian for ‘Don’t take this’. 9:00 That village seems familiar… No, on seconds thoughts I’m just thinking of the ones that Broken Window Theory explored and I don’t think they were in Croatia. 10:20 Those big old carboys were probably used in wine making. 20:25 You’d not get me in that undergrowth/overgrowth with bare arms and bare legs! 21:50 I’d live in that remaining occupied place! Where’s the nearest off-licence? :D 23:15 Phew! I thought there was someone in bed there, as you walked in, but it was just clothing! 41:30 Sam, you’ll have someone’s eye out! 44:25 Scorpions, snakes and bears? Don’t forget that the bats might have rabies. Don’t get bitten! 47:20 Is that a mannekin’s head under the bed? 50:36 You really bashed your hip there, didn't you, Jess? I felt that! 51:30 Yes, I enjoyed this one very much! It looked very hot and must have made for an exhuasting explore, so well done for sticking at it despite the heat!
