During a show at my school there was a mailbox that the main actor had to unlock. The key happened to not work and without missing a beat the actor goes "I think I have a spare around here" and the tech crew was right on it sticking a single hand out with the key and everyone laughed it off and the show went on without a problem.

@Skittl1321

I feel like If/Then had some weird problems. When I saw it, poor Idina started choking on oatmeal, right before she needed to sing. A water bottle slowly came up from the pit for her to get a drink, but she couldn't stop coughing, so the guy starts reading the paper to the audience, telling us about a sale at Macy's- "nope, sorry, this paper's a prop, that sale is way over" then finally calling over to her "You know, we are doing a show- are you ready yet?" But just like Sam said- the audience feels like it is such a "moment" to get to be a part of. And once she was able to clear the food out of her throat, man did she sound amazing. (That same week there was also a set fail at Matilda that took a 30+ minute reset, because they have to get all the kids off the stage if there is a malfunction, as opposed to something like Wicked where the adults just continue around the piece as though it had gone off stage like it was supposed to. The man who played Matilda's father came out and juggled to entertain the audience.) In retrospect, I've seen a lot of mistakes on broadway. Live theater is the best.

@@Skittl1321 wow weird I had two things happen when I saw if/then too! She started coughing through a song and had to restart and then at some point a prop (I can't remember what. Maybe a photo frame?) fell and her and the lead guy both got the giggles. Honestly it made it more memorable, but I wonder if there was something weird going on

Speaking of theater fails, last year when I was in seventh grade, we did Into the Woods. (I was Jack’s Mother!) The girl playing the steward was supposed to say “shut up,” but she was so nervous that she accidentally said “shit up” instead. Our audience was about 95% kindergarteners.😂 That night we had another performance, and she was so determined not to mess up her line again that she kept repeating “shut up” over and over again. But when we got to the part where she was supposed to yell “stop!” from offstage, she yelled “shut up!” instead, which was funny. But then somebody told the girl's mother, and she got in trouble for saying “shit” in front of five-year-olds.

I was doing into the woods(i was cinderella) and we had someone playing milky white. My mic backfired(as you probably know when mics backfire they make a really loud popping noise) and the actor playing milky white was shocked and said ‘JESUS CHRIST!’ My school is a Christian school and our audience for that show was all elementary schools. She was given a choice. Either get suspended and have her role stripped or write an apology letter to all the schools in attendance. She chose option #2.

There's something about Into the Woods. We had more mishaps than I've seen in any show I've done. Cinderella's slipper went flying into the audience, we lost power in the middle of Agony (and they finished the song in the dark), and Prince Charming's pants split down the back on the wooden horse 😂

There was a time I froze on stage and it was towards the end of my monologue so it wasn't too noticeable for the audience. But once I got off stage my nose started bleeding and it was a gushing bloody nose. I had to use a prop blanket as a tissue and I couldn't go back on stage for the rest of the show (which luckily it was already towards the end)

I don’t know if this would be considered a fail, but when Wicked was playing San Francisco pre-broadway, Kristin Chenoweth had injured her neck and was wearing a neck brace. During the scene after Nessarose gets crushed and the witches are fighting, Elphaba raises her hand to slap Glinda, Kristin pointed to her neck as if to say “you can’t hit me, I’m injured”. The audience went crazy. Don’t know if it was ad-libbed or if it was written in to accommodate the injury, but it worked

In my dance studio's production of The Nutcracker, there's always a part where the grandmother "trips" and falls back into someone's arms. One year, the grandma stepped on her skirt as she "fell" and the button came undone and the skirt fell. (She had another skirt underneath so it was fine.) The grandma was just a dancer's mom who volunteered to play the grandma, but she took it in stride SO WELL! She did a big dramatic gasp and then she made a face like "Oh, well!" It was incredible!

One of my favorite shows our high school put on was The Scarlet Pimpernel. I happen to be there the night that everything went wrong (but also so right). It was the last showing and there was tons of great improvising due to issues. My absolute favorite was when one of the staffs they dance with had the top fly off and roll across stage… one of the guys walked over in an over the top way and did the bend and snap. The place was roaring with laughter. Still one of my favorite memories.

my favorite musical fail if you would call it will always be when I was in high school we performed Matilda. there is a song called quiet, in which at the end the fire alarms started to go off at first all of us cast and crew thought it was just a lighting malfunction because we had flashing red lights later on in the show. turns out the janitor was vacuuming up ceramic dust from the art room and it got caught in the smoke alarm. the fire trucks were called and we spent a good 20 minutes hanging out outside. so many people left thinking we wouldn't keep the show going. so if you were there that night and stayed, thank you because you made the show so much better for us who had to go on stage afterwards knowing some people didn't have the energy to stay. the rest of the show was fantastic!

theatre (kinda) fail: in 7th grade, our class did a robin hood play. i was playing a minor character and was backstage, waiting to hear the line cue to go onstage with a few other classmates, one who was playing king richard. i believe one or two classmates that were supposed to deliver lines before king richard showed up forgot it, and for a moment there was just awkward silence. then, one of the classmates onstage improvs, “i wish king richard were here right now!” and our little entourage with king richard went on stage. it was towards the end, though, so it turned out okay. the whole class laughed about it afterwards, and apparently the parents watching didn’t really notice. side note: there was a scene where i was “jousting” with a classmate on stage with pool noodles and i almost tripped on my dress. good times.

My favorite theatre memory was during the wizard of oz(I was the lion) right when the wizard and Dorothy are about to leave Dorothy’s supposed to “not know” where toto is and that leads to a major plot point. The kid who played the wizard put toto onstage because the tech crew said he should. This meant a bunch of 13 year olds had to figure out how to “loose” toto when he was clearly on stage. I ended up throwing toto and a random girl at the curtain kicked him and it still cracks me up when I think about it.

during the closing night of my senior show i was sitting on a piano bench, in front of a fake piano, while wearing a hoop skirt (the platform was barely wider than the piano bench). about 30 seconds into the song i had to get up and start dancing. since i couldn’t sit properly the hoop skirt was bent weird. when i stood up and walked forward the skirt got stuck in the bench and the bench fell on my ankle. i looked at my scene partner and we finished the scene. she later told me that if i had laughed or even giggled she wouldn’t have been able to finish the scene without laughing through it (we’ve been friends since preschool so it was a “i’m going to laugh then ask if you’re ok” situation). not only did i finish the scene while in some pain and not laughing. i also had to run to the other side of the stage, down a flight of stairs back stage and make my quick change, then get back onstage. definitely hurt. definitely bruised. and no one recorded it. show was Little Women btw

I have a couple of theatre mess up stories myself. So my first production on like a real stage outside of school was A Midsummer Night's Dream. I played Philostrate, who, if you know the show, only comes in at the end of the show. So at the time my director had added 7 different dance numbers to the show to keep it entertaining. However, we spent so long in rehearsals working on the dance numbers and cleaning them that never made it all the way to the end of the show, where my character was had this long monologue. I got to run my part 3 times and that was during tech week. So , here's where I made a mistake. Like I said, this was my first show outside of school so I was already anxious AF. So we get through the first act without a problem and now we're nearing the end of the show where i'm supposed to deliver my line. We get going in the scene and my mind goes completely blank. SO trying to save it, I improvised the line "You see my lord. It's so bad, I can't even explain it." I think my brain just stopped working after that because I don't even remember saying any of my lines after that. 😂😂😂 The second time I messed up was in a production of the Wizard of Oz. I was in tap shoes because during the song Merry Ole Land of Oz, we had a little tap section I was apart of. SO in some of the choreography. before we got to that section there was a part where we had to do a three step turn while moving around this turn table that we were using. I get downstage center, go to do the turn and slip and fall right in front of the mayor of Plano. I live in Plano and the mayor actually lives in my neighborhood so I knew him. I had sold him Girl Scout cookies many times. Luckily I didn't hurt myself because this was also the show where I found out I had to have ankle surgery to repair damage from a pervious injury, but it was really, really embarrassing. And it was closing night so I didn't have a chance to redeem myself. It was the same director for both of these as well.😂😂😂

One time I was in a play where my character had her hand wrapped due to an injury and she was a servant. I went to go serve something and my "wrap" got caught on my workstation. So, in pure improvisation, I just screamed in pain (not real), rewrapped my hand, met with the people who had called me over and just calmly, in character, said, "Sorry about that. What did you need?" Which was great, because my character was already basically comedic relief. Then, when the scene was over, I went backstage and my castmates came swarming asking if I was okay. They thought the scream was real, so that boosted my confidence in my acting!

I was a kid when two things happened to me - thankfully the first was in rehearsal. One of the spotlights shattered and rained glass down on me and another girl, and we were wearing ballet shoes and in a pose, so over the god mic you just heard “DONT. MOVE.” And they got some of the dads with work boots on to move us off stage by hooking us under the arms and lifting us whilst still in position, as if we moved we could have cut ourselves. Had to stay perfectly still for about 20 mins whilst people picked me clean! 2nd was on stage, Jack and the giant beanstalk, his mum grabs the beans (about and inch and a half long, made of papier mache and painted so basically like rocks) throws them off stage, except one hit a prop, slid up it, and shot straight into face at high speed. It was a panto, so the poor teen playing the mum was so mortified he’d hurt me, since I was bleeding everywhere!

I was playing two characters, both moms, and one of them was named Joy. She gets beaten to death with a claw hammer by her son. Loved that scene. But… I had to stage fall with no experience. One time, my scene partner pushed me a little too hard (I had asked him to give me a slight shove to make the fall more realistic) and I ended up really hurting my arm. It hurt so bad to move it. And I still have two shows to do after that! We think it was just bad internal bruising or maybe even a small fracture, but it took some work to get through. Still really fun first show, though!

This past summer I was in my community theaters production of Big Fish. And closing night we get news that our lead was in the ER cause he was fishing and ended up with a fish hook in his leg. He got through the show on painkillers and no one could tell at all.

All I can say is I’m currently playing the witch in Into the Woods and it is STRESSFUL… the music is so hard if your using a track and not an orchestra 😂 also the good thing about that part of the song is the line the Bakers Wife says is scripted 😂😂

I (stage manager) this was a highschool play, an actor had a sizure just on stage, not currently in the scene, then about a few min later walked on stage and had a worderfull preformance. also they were on scafoling at the time on the sizure witch made in more scare on our end. same show, lights died and we lost all light cues for the second half and had to improv cues from memory.

I had my class show Oz yesterday (not the Wizard of Oz, just a parody of it), and I was the cowardly Lion. There’s a joke where I’m so scared of flowers that I stop drop and roll to get them off, and every rehearsal, it went fine. Welp, on show night, stopping dropping and rolling made my Lion ears come off. I looked at them for a sec, did a shushing gesture to the audience, and put them back on. It’s a comedy and the audience died, so I guess it worked, but the action definitely wasn’t in character. I wish I had the genius of some of these people to stay in character with the adlibs lol

This one time the trunchbulls wig flew across the stage. And the actor screamed and ran for it. The children improved ASWELL by giggling and calling her bald. Also the chalk machine broke inn the special screen and everyone took turns making up lines when it was super slow every single time

I remember forgetting a prop on stage The thing is that one prop was like a part of my charater, a part of my costume and we fixed it by my friend saying "Isn't that your horse" I will never forget that.

When I was going Grease in high school I played Assistant Principal Blanche and our Principle Lynch had a hair malfunction on stage during the prom sense. So I, brilliantly start slowly pulling the bobby clips out of her hair and handing them to her and she, in character tells me "make sure you get bobby clips that WORK next time" before continuing the sense as normal. The entire cast, crew and audience DIED. And we even improved later with me asking her well we were doing an anaucment sense where I just kept doing the chim we set up for me to play on the little toy xylophone we had if the now bobby clips worked better.

8:26 If you're doing The Full Monty, it's not so metaphorical. No joke, awhile back a local production had the lightboard freeze up at the very end of "Let It Go". They couldn't fade to black and have the backlights flash like they were supposed to, the guys threw their arms up with full stage lighting

In middle school we did a play that was making fun of the horror genre and in the final scene a pitcher of OJ is ment to be poured into a cup but this was a horror play and the OJ was ment to have something wrong with it. So we used bright orange slime but it wouldn't pour out so one of the actors reached their hand into the pitcher and took a handful of the slime and put it in the cup. Now I wasn't on stage when this happened but when I came on stage the table everyone was sitting at was drenched in slime. But that play was my first and I'll never forget it. Also if i remember correctly it was called " The hallmarks of horror" But I can't remember the writer.

When my older brother was in Mary Poppins Jr they had to switch around ear mics, already a bad idea amrite? But he was taking it off and it fell down. It fell down his pants. The thing was, his mic was on. So the entire audience heard a whispered “It fell down my pants…”

i remember when i was in, i think, 4th grade, we were doing a "play" about something in american history, and i had a tiny strip of paper that was my lines. when it came to do the play, i forgot my line, and the teacher had to slip the paper to me, so i ended up saying my line with my head down lol

The Little Red one in Into the woods wasn’t improvised by the Bakers wife. She said what she said at that point in every production. I’m just impressed she knew, when to say it. (“Are you certain if the way” or something like that). But it was definetly a good safe for the girl.

At my school we get prepared for mistakes e.g. The soldiers in our show missed the cue so the main characters just had a conversation until they saw the soldiers standing at the glass door and then they said the line again but instead of My head hurts so bad it feels like there are soldiers in there She said My head hurts even more badly know it feels like they are marching and playing the trompets and the drums so it was not too obvious and no one thought something was wrong what also was a funny fail is when a prop fell and I was like this spy dressed as a maid so the king in the scene ordered me to pick it up while saying to the public how it is so hard to find good maids nowadays
