I have a wonderful example of "The Show Must Go On" mentality in theater! When I was in middle school, we did a version of The Sword and the Stone where I played Merlin the Magician (Yes, as a 12 year old girl, I played a very old man). There was one scene in which I was supposed to knock out this villager and steal their horse so that I could get to Arthur and warn him about something as quickly as possible. Being middle school, our theater department was really low budget, so the horse was just a horse mask on a stick. In one performance, I "knocked" the villager out and as she was falling to the stage, I grabbed the horse. Unfortunately, I grabbed the mask instead of the stick, so the head came off in my hand. I froze for a second, in front of about 200 of my peers, then grabbed the stick from the villager, looked at the person on stage with me, said "I guess I'll have to walk anyway," then walked off stage. When I came back onstage in my next scene, and asked my partner how long I had taken to get there, he said "27 minutes, you might have gotten there in time if you hadn't killed the horse." The original line was simply, "17 minutes, too late." From this point on I was known as "Horse Murderer" by all my classmates.

yea speaking of "the show must go on" mentality. one time we were doing godspell (i was the asm) and one of our dancers somehow DISLOCATED HER SHOULDER. she finished the number while it was still dislocated, and thankfully we had a veteran war medic who put it back into place. she ran of stage, he put it back in, she made not ONE SOUND, and finished the rest of the show.

Oh god, I remember a similar situation from my freshmen year. We were doing Taming of the Shrew with a Viking theme, and during the wedding, Petrukjo slaps his servant Knut across the face. On opening night, that slap was so hard, that Knut’s jaw actually dislocated. He just popped it back during intermission and kept going through the entire show, even though he was in pain the entire time. Don’t know if I would’ve been able to do the same thing if I was in his shoes.

I love the "the audience actually loves theatre mishaps" mentality - I wish that translated to more aspects of theatre, such as a better understanding of the backstage work, especially concerning who stage managers are and what they do. It's easy to get caught up in the actors in front of you; sometimes I wish audiences were more exposed to mishaps - and even simply backstage practices - as a reminder that we're not seeing magic - we're seeing *people*.
@mysub20103 жыл бұрын
I completely understand your view. I think, from the performance and backstage side, there is a slight confrontation there. The performer and crew have worked months/years to make the show perfect. Musical Theatre is popular with wide audiences because it's flashy, clean, large scale and perfect. We see quick changes, large scale set appearances and slick dance routines. I think MT sometimes shoots itself in foot because as a genre it doesn't allow itself space for things to go wrong. Musical Theatre takes itself quite seriously because the genre is doing well. Only now are we starting to see a more post modern perspective. Also, the amount of money we have to pay to go watch top tier MT, I want to see them enjoying themself and doing a good show! Also, as in every proffession, not everyone is interested in the same thing. I've never looked into how pens are made but I still use them and expect them to work how they should. But a pen proffessional might be like "No you need to understand how they work to unlock its full potential". Anyway, just a few thoughts.

And since everyone's sharing their story, here's mine: I was in a production of Cinderella Jr back in 1st grade. It was my first production I had ever done, and somehow I got Cinderella. Anyway, during Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo the Fairy Godmother smacked me in the face with her wand, so that was fun. Later on, when I was running from the ball, in my struggle to get my shoe off on purpose, I tripped and fell down the stairs. Me being the first grader I was broke character, wanting to let the audience know I was alright, and said “I'm okay.” I then gathered myself up and ran backstage, where I felt upset and my director then proceeded to hug me and say that Cinderella would totally have done that when she was running. My own theatre fail story: My friend and I were on stage crew (prop team, specifically) in middle school. We were doing Mary Poppins, and my friend was moving one of the garden wall sections with plants on it. But in one blackout transition, the entire ensemble had to be reshuffled and ppl were moving on and off stage, and my friend had to help move a few things, so they turned the lights back on while she was still trying to move the wall and she had to duck behind it, but one of the plants was falling off the top so she had to hold it up so it didn't fall and distract the actors and the audience. She was stuck behind the prop holding that plant for that whole scene.

Staying in character recoveries: My senior year of HS we did It's a Wonderful Life. The actor who played Potter (a wheelchair-bound character for those who may not know) was able-bodied, 6'3 and a bigger guy, so he always walked on set and then settled into the chair if he was on stage at the start of a scene. In the scene during which George Bailey goes to beg Potter for money to save the Building & Loan, the crew brought the lights up before Potter was seated, obviously getting a response from the audience. The actor who played George had his head down cause he already was in character getting ready for the big emotional monologue his character has, so he didn't see it. Potter quickly sat down in the wheelchair, and by the time George looked up (upon hearing the audience's reaction), he was none-the-wiser. Potter said (with a Obi-Wan Kenobi-esque hand wave), "George, you saw nothing." George replied, "Huh? what?" which had the audience dying of laughter and the scene was off to the races from there.

I also love when something goes wrong on stage and you as an audience member get to see how they go on in character. Like how would their character react? And I love it.

lol i was annie and we had a live dog and pretty much every run she would cry during tomorrow and our final dress was filmed and during that run she ran onstage and ran right back off so i was just kinda standing there saying hERe bOy while the handler was offstage practically pushing her back onstage it was so funny

We also did Annie at my high school and we used my dog to play Sandy. It was convenient that I had the role and he wasn't a young dog so he would definitely come and follow everyone, but rehearsals were so fun having this tiny shih zhu running around. It was also slightly funny to see as the kid being the dog pound guy was a bit iffy around dogs (max did help with that which was nice)

This was really funny but also really cool because I've always wanted to do theater but am always so afraid of messing up even though it's inevitable even if you've been doing it for years with any art, but it's really cool to see that it's normal, not anything personal/actually embarassing.

Two years ago I played Ursula and at the very end where I was “dying” i got so dramatic that my bead bracelet snapped and it basically exploded all over the stage. The funny thing is that my parents were there and they said they heard it💀

One of my friends was on as rooster in annie, and when he was in disguise, he had a fake moustache on. The moustache fell off on stage, and he yells "Look over there!" while pointing into the audience and picks up the moustache and puts it back on. MY GOD IT WAS SO FUNNY

Almost the same Peter Pan fail happened in the community theatre production of the show that I was in a few years ago. I think it was only the preview night, but still, as Peter was flying in, she hit the window and it broke off. We had to stop the show for maybe 15 minutes while they put it back together.

the olaf one always breaks my heart because the guy clearly tries to play it off as a funny haha moment when he first falls, and then tries to continue the song but his mic is gone and so is the puppet and everything is really just working against him. and to top it off, it all happens within the final 20 seconds of the song.

When I was in Frozen, I was Young Anna, and I had a SUPER short quick change, between two scenes that I was in. I had to do it all by myself and sometimes I messed it up a bit. I forgot to make sure my mic belt was secured and when I jumped off my bed, it just fell down! 😂

We had a hunchback of notre dame production here in Germany and one time, the actress who played Esmeralda took a step backwards and fell down the stairs. They did pause the show and her understudy continued the show for her. I’m glad she wasn’t injured seriously 😳

I’ve had a few theatre fails of my own. I think the biggest one I’ve had was “the curse.” So I was in The Jungle Book Kids production and at the end of The Barenesesstiies we’re all supposed to be lying down on the stage while the monkeys came and took mowgli. And when we woke up I kept hitting my head on the box behind me. It happened a lot during rehearsals. But then it actually happened during one of our show dates and I hit my head a lot harder this time. I had a headache pretty much throughout the rest of the show. It was awful. I think the reason I was cursed was because at one point during rehearsals when we were supposed to be scared of Shere Khan, I moved my body a little too close to this pole next to me that it fell over. But luckily someone slid over and caught it. But anyways that’s one of my theatre incidents.

A few years ago I went on foreign exchange at a school in Denmark, and did not know any Danish at all. I was in the schools musical theatre club, we were doing a sort of jukebox musical for Inside Out, and I was Joy, and Sadness was another exchange student friend of mine. On our second show of the day, there was a problem and the main stagelights cut out, but there was still some light so everyone continued as usual and we finished the first number no problem, and the lights eventually came back on. After that it was a scene with only Joy and Sadness on stage, and when we got out we heard our theatre teacher say something in Danish over the loudspeaker. Neither of us understanding a word of it, I assumed she was apologizing for the technical difficulties and once she was done speaking I started with my lines. Then she spoke over the loudspeaker again, and said in english, "J-Joy, Joy we're gonna take it from the top again." At this point I was like ohhhhh.... I looked at the crowd and went "Okay. I don't understand Danish." took an exagerrated bow, and left the stage. The rest of the show went on without issue. The best part is I talked to my friends afterwards and some of them LITERALLY thought that whole thing was intentional and scripted. So yeah, best blunder + best save I've ever had.

My theatre fail: I was a dancer at a theatre camps production of Anastasia, and the opening night, they started Paris holds the Key and Vlad wasn’t on stage (apparently no one told him we were coming back from intermission and so he was in the bathroom) so Dimitri, without missing much of a beat (because everyone turned to Vlad’s spot and he wasn’t there) said Vlad’s lines, which were SOO wrong for him because he’s… Dimitri! Vlad made it to stage, but the line of girl dancers behind the mains were laughing.

Honestly I love when you have to improv and it goes right. I played Grace (the secretary) in Annie Jr. and in one scene the lights come up on Mr. Warbucks on the phone with the president while Grace is taking notes. My scene partner forgot what scene it was so the lights come up and I’m standing there alone. It’s silent. I immediately begin checking my watch and tapping my foot as well as looking at the door. Few seconds later he comes in and I snarkly go, “you’re late.” He replies, “I know.” Then picks up the phone and goes “Mr. President sorry for keeping you waiting.” It worked beautifully my parents didn’t even realize that wasn’t scripted.

i was once in a production of little shop of horrors and in the song feed me the person that was meant to get in the plant to control it missed their cue and i found it quite funny how the really energetic voice of the plant and the comparison of the completely dead plant, not moving at all, looking wilted the entire number

I have seen Frozen at the Hyperion many times, and I've seen two seperate fails. One time Elsa was on the ice stairs in the middle of Let it Go, and the stairs suddenly stop rotating, and she was just trapped on the stairs while the mechanics tried to get it moving again. In the second fail, the Olaf puppet stopped working, almost like the joints were stuck, so as hard as the puppeteer tried, he couldn't get Olaf's limbs to move, but he was a really good sport about it, and just pretended it was so cold that Olaf was frozen. Both times it was fixed pretty quickly, so good job Disney

So, I was in the play Grease for my local high school last year (before everything happened) and it was so fun! We had one of the show must go on moments. We had a real car and it fell of a wheel. So the greasers were dancing and getting the audience to laugh while my friend jacked up the car and put the wheel back on. It was hilarious and definitely one of my favourite moments in theatre.

I played Annie, my grandma did costumes and had to sew a pocket on my costume so I could hold treats in it and give the dog treats to keep it engaged. One night, while I was crossing the stage, those treats fell out. So they close the curtain and I come in front of it to sing Tomorrow when that dog smells the treats. The dog buried her head in the curtain and the audience stared at her butt the hold time. Also, one time, the same dog ran off stage and once ran into the audience. Meanwhile I was singing my little heart out and the audience was dying laughing.
